The holiday season is upon us and what a wonderful time of year to be in Wayne. Between the whimsical decorations that dress up the windows of so many local businesses, and the festive embellishments that line the streets and neighborhoods, I would say this is certainly where you want to be in December. I have always felt that Wayne embodied such charm and appeal around the holidays. I still have a child-like spirit that anticipates the indulgence of stepping into one of the many enchanting shops and peering around at all of the unique treasures that dangle so delicately for me to choose from. I am equally giddy at the thought of walking into one the numerous restaurants and/or bars that createa merry ambiance along with delightful treats and warm cocktails to truly get anyone in the spirit. I am astounded by how hard so many people work in this community to create a unique and memorable holiday experience for everyone to enjoy. After all, isn’t it the people that have the clout to make a great town? Particularly around the holidays. Wayne may not be Bedford Falls, but I certainly think around this time of year we can come darn close to it!

Make sure to kick off the holidays with the very special annual Christmas Tree Lighting event, followed by the Santa parade on December 5th and 6th. Be mindful to support your local businesses while doing your holiday shopping. You will find a fabulous gift guide within this issue to help with ideas for that special person in mind. Take some precious time to really enjoy yourself with friends and family. Most importantly, never ever lose the holiday spirit that resides in each of us. Holding on to the innocence we all had as children and many of us are reminded of during this time of year, is such a sacred and special thing.

What do you think happens to a dog who has the privilege of living under the same household as one of the owners of Braxton’s Animal Works? Probably exactly what

you would imagine when thinking about Braxton’s – a dogs ultimate heaven. Sophie, an 8-year-old Collie, is one lucky pup to have John Braxton as her dad. However, John thought he hit the jackpot when Sophie came into his life alongside Mindy Rhodes, his life partner. They were a package deal, and John wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Mindy had wanted a collie from the time she was a little girl, and finally turned her dream into a reality eight years ago when she bought Sophie from a family in central PA. “I drove 3 hours by myself to pick her out, then went back the first day she was old enough to bring her home,” said Mindy. “I still remember having one hand on her in the crate and one hand on the wheel the entire drive home. She was worth the wait. I don’t think I let

her out of my arms for the first month I had her.” Through the years Sophie has brought Mindy, and now John great joy and laughter to their lives. One year, Mindy recalls John bringing Christmas gifts home from the store to shower the pets with toys under the tree. They will never forget watching Sophie walk into the living room, look under the tree and ever-so-gently pick up a new stuffed toy. Both Mindy and John laughed endlessly as she slyly slithered away with her new gift, whether it was meant for her or not.

Aside from being naturally smart, loyal and obedient, Sophie is incredibly sensitive and intuitive. She has quite a gift. “She is able to read me before I can read myself,” remarked Mindy. “To comfort me, she’ll lay her head on my lap, stare into my eyes and not move a muscle. She can sense people like horses do.” Sophie is the care taker and peace keeper of the household pets, which include: four cats, one rabbit and one more dog. She is a lover not a fighter, therefore strongly dislikes when the cats don’t get along. “She will actually rush over to separate them, make sure to protect the underdog and reinstate peace amongst all the creatures,” said Mindy. “She loves to sleep with cats and treats them as if they are her children. I guess that’s the herding thing.”

One of Sophie’s most favorite places to visit is the obvious choice of Braxton’s Animal Works, a locally owned family business and a staple in the community. Presently the store is co-owned by brother’s John and Dave Braxton, who have taken great pride in being the third generation to run the business. Braxton’s opened in November, 1938 by their grandparents, Edward and Gertrude Braxton. Edward had managed pet stores in Philadelphia prior to opening up his own shop in the stone building on the corner of their current property on Lancaster Avenue. Soon after opening, boarding services were provided and then grooming services were added to that. Eventually Bill Braxton, John’s father, would grow into the business tending to the boarders and groom clients. Bill eventually married his wife Theresa and they raised eight children in Wayne. All siblings reside within 45 minutes of one another to this day.

The strongest asset that makes Braxton’s stand out from other pet stores is their strong dedication to customer and community service. Almost daily there is an instance where a customer feels they were helped above and beyond the expectation. “It can be a simple thing like taking a moment to play with a pet that is visiting the shop, or to the extraordinary experience of one of our employees driving a customer and dog in seizure to the ER,” commented John. “The everyday is just helping our customers enjoy the best experiences possible with their pets by providing great advice on pet foods and products to make sure the customer gets what they need.” On the community side of things, Braxton’s mostrecently donated $2,500 raised during their Harvest Fest-Pet Rescue & Family Fun Day. The proceeds went to the Main Line Deputy Dog organization to help continue its mission to train service dogs with their owners. Braxton’s also received the “Best Friends Award” from Pals for Life for Braxton’s continuing support of their work in bringing pet visitations to those that need them.

It seems quite fitting for Braxton’s to receive such an accolade, seeing all that they do for pets in the community. On the home front, that “Best Friend Award” would most likely go to the beautiful Sophie herself for all that she does for their family. Mindy reflected on her life with Sophie thus far, and simply stated, “She is the greatest dog I have ever had…she is my heart.”

The moment has finally arrived that so many of you have been anticipating for the last several months. The Barn at Valley Forge Flowers is open for business, and what a

perfect time of year to welcome existing and new customers to this grand new space that is only steps away from Valley Forge Flowers in the Eagle Village Shops here in Wayne. The 8,500-square-foot space will be dedicated to making your outdoor areas as comfortable and lovely as your indoor ones. “We really needed more space to showcase our outdoor lifestyle products, plants, pottery, accessories and so much more,” said Barbara King, owner of Valley Forge Flowers. “Not only is it going to be a great retail space, but it’s going to beset up in a way that will make you feel like you are in someone’s barn at their comfortable home. It is definitely another extension of our brand.”

The Barn is a sprawling space inside with incredible light streaming through from every angle. It is an architect’s delight with the thoughtful design of the wooden beams that create a sense of warmth from the moment you walk through the door. The flow of this vast space was carefully considered throughout; from the open concept kitchen to the cozy café and then on to the stunning retail section that is merchandised to perfection. The exterior is simply divine in appearance and offers a gorgeous courtyard filled with inspirational vignettes to consider for your outdoor living areas. Barbara Balongue was the interior designer for The Barn and has worked with Barbara King on the Valley Forge Flowers space. JTA Architects designed the barn and certainly played a major role in tying

everything together. Jeff Martin, owner of JTA Architects, has worked alongside Barbara King on other projects, one being Valley Forge Flowers. “He is an amazing architect that comes up with ideas that are so clever,” commented Barbara. “He listens to what I’m thinking and walks me through how the business is going to flow. I don’t know if every architect can do that. He has really helped me along the way with making decisions and looking at things from all angles. We work together as a team.”

Barbara and her crew have traveled all over the U.S. and throughout Paris to find the most unique garden accessories, fire pits, pottery, perennial plants, outdoor furniture and much more. “We love to hunt and find great things,” remarked Barbara. “We definitely want to make sure everything we find is comfortable. We sit in it, we feel it, we live it. This is the process to finding great products.” There will be a newly featured section in The Barn with the Barbara King Home & Garden outdoor lifestyle collection. An exciting time for King to present her collection, she explains, “This is definitely a more comfortable and more beautiful way of creating extra space for yourself and getting in the outdoors. We offer pricing with this collection where you are not sacrificing style and quality. This was extremely important to me that I deliver the best products to my customers.” Other fabulous lines that will be carried in-store are Lane Venture, Barlow Tyrie and Summer Classics to list a few.

The freshly designed café and coffee bar will have special offerings such as Capogiro gelato in an assortment of flavors, along with Liege waffles from Belgium. These aren’t any ordinary waffles. In fact, these unusually delicious waffles can’t be found in the U.S. Therefore, Barbara has imported the dough from Belgium along with the waffle irons to assure every customer has the unique experience of biting into a little piece of heaven.

Workshops and lectures is another fantastic highlight to look forward to at The Barn. In designing the building Barbara and her team knew if they were to have any kind of events they should have a catering kitchen to be more accommodating for their clients and guests. “I figured if we’re putting in a kitchen why not do workshops. So many people love to watch the artist at work in creating whatever they are doing,” said Barbara. “Why not let customers see what happens in the kitchen. Invite chefs to come talk about their specialties and demos. We’re going to be searching for people who have knowledge to share. We’ll be incorporating local chefs, world renowned chefs and even local residents who want toshare a really special family recipe.” There will also be classes set up later in the year to teach kids how to grow, harvest and cook food. A fulfilling experience for all involved and those who want to attend. With so many exciting things to look forward to here at The Barn, be sure to stop on by and explore this whimsical structure in all its glory. You surely won’t walk out empty handed with all the extraordinary treasures that await you. “I get so much enjoyment out of watching people feel good about being here,” stated Barbara. “I want everyone’s expectations exceeded. I want each person to walk in and just be blown away.”

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in downtown Wayne this month with Wayne Hotel’s annual Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration presented by the Wayne Business

Association. On Friday, December 5th from 5:30PM-7:30PM, the Tree Lighting Ceremony will occur along with horse drawn carriage rides, carolers, ornament decorating and face painting. An evening not to forget as you share in the festivities with your fellow neighbors and family. On Saturday, December 6th at 10AM the highly anticipated Santa Parade will begin along Lancaster Avenue and ending at the Wayne Hotel. The Radnor High School Marching Band and Valley Forge Military Academy Field Music Group will be in top form as they fill the avenue with the sounds of Christmas. Wayne Art Center is very proud to announce the 20th anniversary celebration of CraftForms. Craft Forms 2014, the International Juried Exhibition of Contemporary

Crafts, will be on display at the Wayne Art Center from December 5, 2014- January 31, 2015. This eagerly anticipated exhibition, celebrating its 20th milestone year, is dedicated to enhancing the public’s awareness of fine contemporary craft while providing a venue for established and emerging artists to share their creative endeavors. Craft Forms is internationally recognized as one of the premiere contemporary craft exhibitions. The finest works of ceramics, wood, fiber, metal, glass, mixed medium and 3D printing are featured, supporting the Center’s mission of expanding the public’s awareness of fine contemporary crafts, and significantly benefiting all educational and outreach programs for children and adults.

On Friday, December 5, 2014, 6:00 till 10:00 p.m., the Preview Party will welcome over 200artists, business sponsors, patrons, committee members and guests. Festive cocktails andhors d’oeuvres will be offered by Jeffrey Miller Catering, featured wines by Little Black Dress,martini bar ice luge created by Rob Capone and a live blend of world music and jazz by KenUlansey Ensemble will entertain the guests.

Craft Forms’ reputation grows exponentially each year due to the quality of artist submissions, in addition to the jurors, the highest esteemed experts in the craft world,

who select the works for display. With 20 years to reference, 404 applicants and 718 images from around the world were submitted for the jurors’ consideration. Wayne Art Center is honored to announce the two craft masters selected 99 pieces for Craft Forms 2014 exhibition, David R. McFadden, Chief Curator Emeritus of the Museum of Art & Design, New York City and Bruce W. Pepich, Executive Director & Curator of Collections of the Racine Art Museum, Racine. Several of the esteemed past jurors include: Lena Vigna, Racine Art Museum, Cindi Strauss, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; 2 Elizabeth Agro, Philadelphia Museum of Art; Jane Milosch, Smithsonian Institution; Paul Smith, NYC, Michael Monroe, VA and Lloyd Herman, WA. McFadden and Pepich will select the awards on Friday, December 5 with over $6,000 in award money. They will then present an insightful Juror’s Talk on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. and Meet the Craft Artists will directly follow their presentation.

In addition, this year’s companion exhibition will embrace craft in an interior environment, titled, Living with Craft. This series of craft-inspired lifestyle vignettes will feature local, regional, national and international craft artist’s ingenious master works staged among idealist furniture, lighting, floor coverings, decorative and functional objects. The concept for this companion exhibition, Living with Craft, (and to help celebrate the 20th year of Craft Forms) is to demonstrate to viewers just how craft can be aesthetically and successfully integrated into several contemporary living environments. The idea was to select furniture makers to design the core area of a living space and then coordinate various craft makers who work in glass, fiber, metals, ceramics and mixed media to complete the lifestyle venues. Nakashima Woodworkers, Thomas Moser, Bradford Woodworking and Michael Brolly, who are all Philadelphian artists, as well as Vivian Beer and Matthias Pliessnig, are a few of the artisans who have agreed to create furniture vignettes.

So far as I can see, a procession has value in but two ways--as a show and as a symbol, its minor function being to delight the eye, its major one to compel thought, exalt the

spirit, stir the heart, and inflame the imagination. Mark Twain uttered these words in response to attending Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee procession, which traveled through the streets of London in 1887.

Parades have long been held in celebration of everything from homecomings, championship game victories, and holidays. The oldest Thanksgiving Day Parade in America is none other than our own, The 6abc Dunkin Donuts Philadelphia Parade, (sponsored by Gimbel’s in 1920), followed by Detroit’s America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (1924) and New York’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (1924).

Thanksgiving is a time to count our blessings, exhibit gratitude and celebrate faith, family and freedom. It is the beginning of the holiday season when people of various faiths celebrate near the years end. Buddhists celebrate Bodhi Day, Jewish people celebrate Hannukah, Kwanzaa is celebrated African-Americans, Native Americans celebrate the Winter Solstice and Christians celebrate Christmas.

The Peppermints: Thanksgiving Day Parade: It’s the holiday season! The Peppermint family travel to New York City for the Thanksgiving Parade. Raspberry Linzer Torte Cookies • 1 bag (8-ounce) pecans • 1/2 cup cornstarch • 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) butter softened • 1 1/3 cups confectioners’ sugar • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 3/4 teaspoon salt • 1 large egg • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour • 3/4 cup seedless red raspberry jam

1. In a food processor with knife blade attached, pulse pecans and cornstarch until pecans are finely ground.

2. In a large bowl, with mixer on low speed, beat butter and 1 cup confectioners’ sugar until mixed. Increase speed to high; beat 2 minutes or until light and fluffy, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. At medium speed, beat in vanilla, salt, and egg. Reduce speed to low; gradually beat in flour and pecan mixture just until blended, occasionally scraping bowl.

3. Divide dough into 4 equal pieces; flatten each into a disk. Wrap each disk with plastic wrap and refrigerate 4 to 5 hours or until dough is firm enough to roll.

4. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Remove 1 disk of dough from refrigerator; let stand 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature. On a lightly floured surface roll dough with pin to 1/8 inch thick. With floured round or holiday-shaped cookie cutter, cut dough into as many cookies as possible. With floured round or holiday-shaped cookie cutter, cut out centers from half of cookies. Wrap and refrigerate trimmings. With lightly floured spatula, carefully place cookies, 1 inch apart, on ungreased large cookie sheet.

5. Bake cookies 17 to 20 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Transfer cookies to wire rack to cool. Repeat with remaining dough and trimmings.

6. When cookies are cool, sprinkle remaining 1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar through sieve over cookies with cutout centers.

7. In a small bowl, stir jam with fork until smooth. Spread jam on top of whole cookies; place cutout cookies on top.

Gingerbread Kisses • 3 cups flour • 2 teaspoons ground ginger • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 3/4 cup butter, softened • 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 1/2 cup molasses • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • White and milk chocolate swirled kiss-shaped candies (Hershey’s)

1. Mix flour, ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg and salt in large bowl and set aside.

2. Beat butter and brown sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add molasses, egg and vanilla; mix well. Gradually beat in flour mixture on low speed until well mixed.

3. Press dough into a thick flat disk. Wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight.

4. Preheat oven to 350°F. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll in granulated sugar to coat. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges of cookies just begin to brown.

5. Immediately press a chocolate candy into center of each cookie. Remove to wire racks; cool completely.

Chocolate Peppermint Patty Cookies • 10 ounce bittersweet chocolate, chopped • 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cut into chunks • 3 large eggs, at room temperature • 1 cup sugar • 3/4 cup flour • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 3 cups powdered sugar • 4 tablespoons milk • 3/4 teaspoon peppermint extract • About 2 cups crushed and sifted candy canes

1. Put chocolates and butter in a medium metal bowl and set bowl over a pan filled with 1 inch of simmering water. Cook, stirring occasionally, until melted, then remove from heat and let cool slightly. Whisk in eggs and sugar, mixing until combined. Then whisk in flour, baking powder, and salt. Chill dough, covered, until firm, about 2 hours.

2. Let dough sit at room temperature 15 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350° and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoop 1 tbsp. portions of dough, rolling each into a ball, and put onto sheets 1 inch apart. Using the palm of your hand, press dough balls into rounds 1/4 inch thick.

3. Bake cookies until they no longer look wet on top, about 8 minutes. Let cool on baking sheets.

4. In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar, milk, and peppermint extract until smooth. Spread 1 heaping tsp. peppermint icing onto the flat side of 1 cookie. Top with flat side of a second cookie to form a sandwich, pressing together to squeeze filling to the edge. Roll edge of cookie in candy canes. Repeat with remaining cookies. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes; reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees and continue baking until the top crust is golden brown, 35 to 40 minutes.
