Editor’s LetterJUNE 2014

Laurie Wightman’s Contact Information:[email protected]

Summertime has arrived with a warm embrace as we gear up for a season filled with family fun, vacations at the beach, backyard BBQ’s and endless outdoor activities. Each year when the month of June rolls around I tend to observe a sense of lightness in the air with long summer evenings that seem to go on forever. There is a joyful spirit around town as locals anticipate weekend plans or extended vacations with loved ones.

However, something that can’t be overlooked in June is Father’s Day. It is a time to show true appreciation for the Dad in your life who hopefully has believed in you, guided you, supported you and most importantly loved you. Even if your father is no longer with you, I think it is still a special day to honor the memories that you shared with him. I would like to thank my very own father, David Wightman, who has been a remarkable dad and role model in my life. I have turned to my father for wise advice and direction through most of my major life decisions, as he has always been a guiding light in my family. It is due to the immense amount of support and belief in my own capabilities from my father that I am here today presenting you with Wayne Magazine. I truly would not be able to have done this venture without my father and of course my mother too. I am one of the luckiest daughters around to be blessed with such a compelling Dad who has been so instrumental in my own life.

I do hope you will enjoy this special issue to kick off the summer solstice later on this month. We offer a fun Father’s Day Gift Guide, a heartwarming story about two sister’s inspiration to support Project ALS after losing their father to Lou Gehrig’s Disease, some key suggestions on planting a flower garden and much more. So pull out your bathing suits and flip flops, turn up the music and let’s get to some summertime fun!

Sincerely,

June’sDOG OF THE MONTH

by Laurie Wightman

He was born on Valentine’s Day, and although he is extremely driven and focused on his job at hand, he will always be a lover not a fighter. John brought Leo back home and trained him for an entire year to prepare him for K9 School that was back out in Ohio for two very intense months. At the end of the course Leo was certified in obedience, tracking and evidence search. Each dog in the course has a specific scent discipline, which for Leo it was Accelerants. Leo is an invaluable tool as he is used to assist fire investigators in determining whether or not ignitable liquids (accelerants) were present at the time of a fire. He can also be used to detect ignitable liquids on a suspect’s clothing or inside of a vehicle used to transport such liquids, among many other scenarios. “There is nothing that someone can start a fire with that Leo won’t be able to discover,” said John. This strong and obedient dog has been in service for just over one year now. Presently there are three arson cases pending where Leo was brought in to confirm that an accelerant was used. Once that confirmation has been secured, samples are taken and sent to the lab. “An example of how Leo can help out in an arson case

would be after a fire has occurred, instead of investigators having to take numerous samples of an entire wall, Leo is able to go right to the source where accelerants were used and the investigators only need to take a big sample of that source,” said John. “He makes the investigative process extremely efficient. Leo has an excellent record, actually 100% of not giving a false positive.”

Leo has become a favorite around Devon Veterinary Hospital, where John first brought him when he was a puppy. Dr. Carol Caracand has been a terrific supporter of Leo through these last two years. “I need to know that I have a reliable veterinary hospital to go to if Leo ever gets injured on the job,” said John. “My relationship with Dr. Caracand has been tremendous and I feel extremely secure that Leo is in the best of hands at Devon Veterinary Hospital.” Everyone enjoys seeing this gentle and spirited canine walk through the doors. As good as Leo is with finding accelerants, he is equally talented in charming the ones around him. Thank you Leo for helping to make our community a safer place to live in.

Meet Leo – named after the fire sign of the zodiac. He is the Chester County Sheriff ’s office special K9 Accelerant. This 28-month-old black German Sheppard came way of Ohio where his owner, Special Deputy John P. Dibuonaventuro, picked him up. In fact, Leo was the only black haired German Sheppard out of a litter of 11.

June Gardening TipsOnce June arrives, the summer’s heat is here. In this month’s gardening section we highlight some of the best flowers to plant in your garden to create dimension and color. June is the month to focus on planting annuals that grow best when temperatures are above 80 degrees. There are several options to choose from, but here are the top 5 annuals that I personally favor when looking for an abundant flower garden that will flourish quickly and last throughout the summer months.

• Marigolds, both tall African and short, compact French types are easy to start from seed and are great annuals to plant from starter packs from the nursery in June.

• Salvias’ red tubular variety attract hummingbirds, and other species yield purple to powdery blue or white spikes. Whichever you like, plant these heat-loving tropical plants in June to get them off to a good start.

• Impatiens, perhaps the most popular summer annual for shady garden areas, can be planted in June. The hotter the temperatures, the more watering they need to prevent wilting.

• Morning Glories are annual climbers with slender stems, heart-shaped leaves, and trumpet-shaped flowers in pink, purple-blue, magenta, or white. They have a beautiful shape before they unfold in the Sun and romantic tendrils that lend old-fashioned charm. The flowers bloom from early summer to the first frost. Their big, fragrant, colorful flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

• Zinnias are one of the easiest annuals to grow. They grow quickly, and bloom heavily. They make a massive burst of color in your garden. Zinnias have bright, solitary, daisy-like flowerheads on a single erect stem. The most common zinnia is “dahlia-flowered” and grows up to three feet. Other types are “cactus-flowered.”

“The Wayne Art Center Plein Air Festival is an exciting opportunity to bring valued talent to our community,” said Nancy Campbell, Executive Director of Wayne Art Center. “Over half of the artists come from other regions stretching up and down the East Coast and Midwest. This year with the growing awareness of the Wayne Plein Air Festival, there were applicants from 18 states and the District of Columbia.

During the first three days of the competition the festival artists were directed to paint within 20 miles of Wayne. A combination of pastoral scenes from nearby rural areas and parks, quaint scenes from historic Main Line neighborhoods and downtown Philadelphia, made for a pleasing variety of works that reflect the character of our area. On Friday, May 16th, the painters had the option to venture off to the famous Ardrossan Farm

One of the most sought-after national juried exhibitions of Plein Air paintings will be on display at the Wayne Art Center through June 28, 2014. The Wayne Art Center’s Eighth Annual Plein Air Festival began with 30 artists arriving with their blank canvases on May 13th ready to begin the challenge of executing a brand new body of work in just 4 1/2 days. These distinguished artists came from across the country to arrive in Wayne for a five day landscape painting competition.

in Villanova. On Saturday, May 17th, downtown Wayne became the central spot for artists to paint on the final day of the festival. Artists were seen capturing everyday life on the main thoroughfare and along the train tracks. In years past, participating artists have produced over 250 to 300 pieces of fresh work. The exhibit commenced with a Gala Opening and Artist’s Reception on Saturday, May 17th in the Davenport Gallery where juror, Randall Sexton announced awards and presented $8,000 in prize money.

The Plein Air Festival is an important fundraising event for the Wayne Art Center. Proceeds help support educational and outreach programs that allow the art center to serve all members of the community. These impressive works of art will remain on display and for sale, open to the public until June 28, 2014. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9am until 5pm and Saturdays 10am until 4pm. A new juried exhibition, Radnor Reflections, Capturing a Way of Life Through the Lens of a Camera, will be presented by the Radnor Conservancy and Wayne Art Center in the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Gallery through June 28th. Radnor Reflections is an exhibition of photography that chronicles the natural, historical and cultural assets of Radnor Township throughout 2013–2014. The photography exhibition will capture a way of life throughout the seasons and celebrates the many talented photographers in the area.

With so many options to choose from, make sure to get a little culture on at the treasured Wayne Art Center this June. For more information about these two special exhibits contact Wayne Art Center at 610.688.3553 or go to www.wayneart.org

I have friends who would do anything to still have their Dad alive but have lost them to unfortunate circumstances. One of these friends is a local in the community, Erica Barnes. She and her sister Lisa lost their father John Wetherhold back in October, 2007 to ALS which is also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Specifically, John was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS which affects the mouth and throat first, whereas most patients notice initial onset in their limbs. Due to this disease, he was unable to swallow, eat and talk for the last year of his life.

John was the kind of man and father who many people could only dream of having. He was an incredibly moral man who was full of life and loved his two daughters dearly. He was spiritual and saw each day as a day filled with opportunity, positivity and laughter. John supported his daughters fully and was the glue that kept them together. After being diagnosed with ALS, John’s slurred speech slowly deteriorated until his jaw and throat became paralyzed. While ALS robbed John of his voice, he was still able to communicate through email, and so with bad came good. There was a series of letters and email exchanges that Erica and Lisa were fortunate enough to have with their Dad. These letters are still read on a regular basis by both sisters and will always be treasured. Here is a small excerpt from one of his letters to his daughters:

As you guys are experiencing, raising kids is not the easiest job as there is always something to do. But all of the bone tiring duties you have as a parent pale in exchange for the love that you have for your children. Expressing my Love, Erica and Lisa, is something that is beyond description. We know the feelings we have for each other and you now know as parents how strong that love is for your children. My life is awesome, and Lisa and Erica you have made it so. Thank you. Dad.

After John’s passing at the age of 61, both Erica and Lisa struggled to pick up the pieces and move forward. But their father’s voice and spirit was always with them, and inspired them to work toward finding a cure for ALS. “When my father was diagnosed, we were researching the best doctors, clinical trials, medications, etc. - essentially anything we could find to prolong his life. After pouring over everything we could find out about ALS, we came across Project ALS,” said Lisa Wetherhold. “It was formed by the three Estess sisters, one of whom was dying of ALS. Sadly Jenifer Estess, who made a huge impact on awareness, research and advocacy, died in 2003.That has not stopped Meredith and Valerie from continuing their commitment to finding a cure. What Project ALS does best is they bring scientists and physicians together to uncover more about the disease rather than competing against each other. I know the incredible bond my sister, my Dad and I experienced and this is the same power that drives Meredith and

by Laurie Wightman to Find a Cure for ALS

For many of us, Father’s Day is when we are fortunate enough to spend quality time with our Dad’s and let them know how much we appreciate and love them. Maybe we go to a Phillies game with them, or have a BBQ in the backyard or play a round of golf together. Whatever it may be, for many of us we are the lucky ones to still have our fathers around.

Valerie to never stop pushing to find a cure in honor of their sister.”

In 2011, Lisa’s daughter Avery, took a vow of silence for 10 hours in honor of her grandfather. Because ALS patients are robbed of their voice and of their lives, Avery’s vow of silence was a powerful and kind gesture to honor those with the disease. This year, Project ALS was so inspired by Avery’s vow of silence that they decided to roll it out on a national platform. On May 18th, 2014 Project ALS created a national campaign called ‘THE SHUTDOWN’, where they asked people across the country to participate in taking a vow of silence to show their support and make a difference in the fight against this devastating disease. More than $120,000 has been raised so far from THE SHUTDOWN campaign, and this is just the beginning of what Project ALS hopes to turn into a much larger national campaign of raising awareness for ALS in years to come. It is now a part of both Erica and Lisa’s mission in life to honor their Dad’s legacy.

Father’s Day has taken on a new meaning for the Wetherhold sister’s these days. Their Dad’s physical presence may not be here, but his magic of touching his daughter’s lives and his grandchildren’s lives in a way that can never be replaced will always remain in their hearts. “I look at the pictures of him scattered throughout my house and wonder, ‘How did this happen? Why did this happen to a man who was so full of life and in the most incredible shape for a man his age,’” said Erica. “While I miss him every day, I am also inspired every day by him and the life lessons he taught my sister and me. In one of my favorite pictures he has his arms wrapped so tightly around us and his smile is so wide and his face just says, ‘Look at us…we have the best life. I love these girls and they love me!’ I know how blessed I am to have had him as my father, and I am grateful. Grateful for a loving father, who would often say to us ‘You know girls, there are seven billion people in the world, how did I get so lucky to be blessed with the best two?’”

Bacon, Avocado, Tomato and Corn Salad

• 5 strips thick-cut bacon• 4 ears corn, husks and silks removed• 8 ounces of cherry or grape

tomatoes (halved)• 2 ounces feta cheese (may be

substituted with Mozzarella)

• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil• Juice of 1 lemon • 1 Avocado• Coarse salt and freshly ground black

pepper to taste

1. Place a heavy skillet over medium heat. Lay the bacon strips in the skillet and cook both sides until the bacon is crisp, 5 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel–lined plate to dry. Remove all but 1 tablespoon of the bacon fat from the skillet.

2. Cut the kernels off each cob by laying the cob flat on a cutting board and using a sharp knife to remove the kernels. Transfer the kernels to the skillet with the bacon fat. Cook the corn over medium-high heat until it is just slightly golden brown, about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat, crumble in the feta cheese, and add the basil and lemon juice. Let the mixture cool to room temperature. Roughly crumble the bacon into the corn mixture and toss to combine.

3. Cut the avocado in half lengthwise. Remove the pit from the avocado and discard. Remove the avocado from the skin, and cut the avocado into 1⁄2-inch pieces. Transfer the avocado to the skillet and toss. Toss the halved tomatoes into the salad.

4. Taste and season with salt and pepper before serving. Serve immediately at room temperature, or refrigerate for later. Bring to room temperature before serving.

Sexy SHOULDER EXERCISES for Women

By Maria Sollon-Scally

The Sexy Shoulder Workout Prescription:• Do this workout 2-3 times per week along with a solid

cardio plan to burn off extra calories. • Perform each shoulder exercise 10-15x’s, then transition

directly to the next exercise with little to no rest. Rest once the entire circuit has been completed.

• Cycle through this continuous circuit 2-3 sets. • For an extra challenge, add in a set of core exercises

in between the shoulder circuit; then repeat from the top.• Increase the incline for an added challenge and to

change the workout slightly.

The summer heat is here and you know what that means… Sleeveless tops, sexy sundresses and sizzling swimsuits will be worn. You need a quick and effective shoulder workout to look and feel great while strolling around the pool or attending those summer parties we all look forward to. Here’s the shoulder strengthening exercise solution just for you...

One of the most important parts of the body to strength train is your shoulders. Training the entire shoulder area not only creates a sexy look, but also helps your shoulders with the daily things you do such as carrying your purse, lifting heavy bags or boxes, carrying children and lifting things overhead.

Sculpting strong shoulders should be done in every angle of motion which will help prevent the risk of injury and will tone your shoulders equally. Another positive benefit from sculpting sexy shoulders is that it helps give the appearance of a slimmer waistline with proportional hips. Do I need to convince you any further on how important it is to train those shoulders?

Sexy Shoulder Exercises: 1. Overhead press w/ twist: Stand with legs hip distance apart,

knees slightly bent, back straight and core engaged. Start with weights held at shoulder height, palms facing you. Extend the arms directly overhead and rotate the palms to face away from you as they reach the end range of motion. Return to start position to repeat the exercise. 10-15 reps.

2. Upright rows: Stand with legs wider than hip distance apart, knees slightly bent, spine straight and core engaged. Bring both arms up to chest height with elbows out to the sides as you lift. At the top of the motion the arms should be parallel to the ground. 10-15 reps.

3. Arm circles: Stand with legs wider than hip distance apart and knees slightly bent. Make a large circle motion with the arms not exceeding the shoulder height. Repeat 10 reps in each direction.

4. Rear Delt Flyes: Hinge from hips keeping knees slightly bent and back straight. Open arms to the sides as if you are spreading your wings. Squeeze and activate upper back muscles. 10-15 reps.

As wayward travelers often do, my father Fritz Kellner is off on another adventure. After last month’s festivities during the Devon Horse Show where he was warmly embraced by many, and even more-so by the delectable treats and cocktails that flowed in his favor, he found it only appropriate to take his endless search for the ‘Quintessential Cocktail’ abroad. His journeys have taken him to an extended trip overseas in Europe. As he meanders through the streets of London in search of a proper Pimms Deluxe, and gallivants through the Black Forest to find an authentic German beer garden, and even possibly stumbles upon the perfect aperitif along the French Riviera, we will await his return to hear what the Old Codger has to say for himself in July. So that leaves me, his daughter, Fritzie Kellner, to carry on his column for the month of June.

As we celebrate Father’s Day in this particular issue, I’ll take the opportunity to honor and thank old Fritz himself for being such an upstanding father through the years. Not every daughter has the privilege of growing up with such an adventurous Dad like the Wayward Traveler. For a man who originally came from NYC and worked extremely hard to get where he is today, I am so very proud to say he is my father. The Old Codger has certainly taught me a vast amount on how to live life to the fullest and enjoy the quintessential cocktail as often as possible. It may not be how everyone chooses to go about their lives, but when

one chooses to live outside of the normal rules of society in search for the ultimate beauty in life, more likely than not you’ll end up having a lot of fun along the way. I guess you could say I’m somewhat of a protégé of my Dad, as I aspire to live a life free of worry or concern while choosing the roads less traveled with humbleness as he has done all these years. When I thought of ways to show my love and admiration for having such a crafty father, the only thing I could think of doing was to try and come up with an ingenious cocktail of choice for Fritz himself to try. What better gift than the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to the Old Codger. I want to really knock his socks off by offering him what I hope to be the ultimate cocktail that he has been endlessly searching for in Wayne. So I’ll take a stab at concocting my own drink that will surely surprise him upon his return. I ask that you, the reader, please try this drink concoction at home and let me know by Father’s Day if you think it has what it takes to finally end the Wayward Travelers quest for the ‘Quintessential Cocktail.’ This one is for you Dad…
