    Mainstreaming ecosystem considerations into business is becoming increasinglyimportant in order to deal with the challenges o a resource-constrained world.However, some links between ecosystems and the business bottom line are stillunknown or new to many companies.

    The WBCSD has developed tools to help companies assess and value their ecosystem risks and opportunities, such as the Corporate Ecosystem Services Review and the Guide to Corporate Ecosystem Valuation . However, a gap remainsin building the skills companies need to improve their ecosystem management.Helping close this learning gap is precisely what the Business EcosystemsTraining (BET) program aims to do.

    I would like to thank all those who contributed to the development o BET,in particular KPMG or developing the curriculum design and ensuringthe program is jam-packed with interactive exercises, real case studies andchallenging questions. I would also like to greatly thank the BET AdvisoryCommittee or all o their in-kind support in ensuring the high quality, businessrelevance and environmental accuracy o the material.

    BET is straight orward to use and is designed to be easily customized or aspecifc company, industrial sector or geography. I strongly urge companiesto use this gold mine o training material and build the skills they need.     Business Ecosystems Training (BET) course is a reely-available capacity buildingprogram to increase the knowledge and understanding o the links betweenecosystems and business. The objective o BET course is to equip companieswith the skills they need to better manage their impacts and dependencieson ecosystems and the services that they provide. The program draws onthe wealth o WBCSD materials, methodologies and tools that have beendeveloped over the past 10 years.

    BET has been developed by the World Business Council or SustainableDevelopment (WBCSD) in collaboration with KPMG and an advisory committeethat brings together some o the worlds largest companies, NGOs, UN relatedorganizations, and academic institutions. All content is based on a combinationo WBCSD material, member company case studies and publically availableresources. The course content has been approved or use by the WBCSD, theadvisory committee, and member companies whose material has been used(see Figure 1 or the project overview).

    This collaborative development process makes BET a unique tool or learningabout the links between ecosystems and business. The course combinesexperience rom the worlds leading business voice on ecosystems, together with the scientifc knowledge and expertise rom the NGO world, combinedwith academic and learning rigor rom universities and training institutions.BET has been designed to get employees rom di erent unctions and businessunits thinking not only about ecosystems and the services they provide, butalso how their organization can impact or depend on them. It is structured as

    our modules, which gradually go into more detail on the topic, depending onthe needs o the learner.

    This implementation guide has been developed to introduce the trainingcourse to those considering whether to use BET in their company or organization. The implementation guide is split into the ollowing sevensections:

    The business case or BET.

    Course overview.

    Audience.

    Pack structure and additional tips or running the course.

    Terms o use and suggested course evaluation.

    Further in ormation and resources.

    Annex.

    This is, in principle, a linear training program, i.e. the audience needs to olloweach module one a ter the other. However, the modules are developed in sucha way to allow them to be used individually i necessary (e.g. module 3 couldbe used on its own, or an audience that already have some environmental andsustainability expertise). There ore the materials provided should be tailoredprior to delivering the course, in order to ensure that the specifc needs o theparticipants are met.

    E ectively managing ecosystems can make companies more competitive,more resilient to shocks, more agile in a ast-changing world, and more likelyto attract and hold customers and the best employees. It can also improverelationships with regulators, banks, insurers and fnancial markets.

    Why use BET? BET is being developed by the WBCSD or its member companies, but is made widely available to all stakeholders. The objectives o the training are to:

    Module 1 Understanding the links betweenecosystem services and business

    By the end of the module, trainees will be able to:

    Who needs to know about ecosystems in your company? In short, the answer to this is everyone. However, in practice, this is dependent on both thecompanys overall position and achievements on ecosystems, and the needs o individual employees. Some companies have been working on the ecosystemsagenda or the past 15 years, and the basic concepts are well established withincompany systems and processes, including business principles, procurementpolicies, and site operations. Other companies are newer to the agenda andare just beginning to defne key terms and issues, and exploring what impactand dependency they might have on ecosystem services. Employees also havedi erent knowledge and experience requirements dependent on their unction,responsibilities and role.

    BET could be used to convince top management o the business case or identi ywhich tools and methodologies to use. For companies with a more establishedecosystems strategy, BET could be used to get as many employees as possiblethinking about what ecosystems mean within their own work. Potentialaudiences include not only Sustainable Development and Health, Sa ety andEnvironment specialists, but also employees working in procurement, fnance or local site managers. This will also depend on the companys strategy regardingthe integration o ecosystems related topics in decision-making. Further detailsrelating to the audience, including any pre-requisites or each module, are givenwithin the Facilitator Notes or specifc modules.

    The maximum recommended number of delegates for any module is 20

    Learning will not be uni orm and employees rom the shop oor to executiveboard room will need a tailored package to meet their di erent needs. The

    ollowing list details the di erent ways BET could be leveraged within a company:

    To develop specialist pro essional skills, or example o environmentalscientists, health and sa ety o fcers, or sustainable development managersand to re ect the particular issues related to di erent business unctions

    rom purchasing to communications, and rom design to transportation.

    To deepen knowledge and understanding o ecosystem services or keydecision makers building on their own experience and judgment as wellas the experiences o others, within the company and outside.

    To complement company-specifc training programs. For example,embedding understanding o existing policies or biodiversity andecosystem services in a training on companys business principles, or

    commitment to environmental ootprint reduction.

    Facilitators should consider the range o di erent types o delegate and skillsets, in addition to how the course complements training courses that arealready available (see Table 1 or recommendations as to which modules suitdi erent audiences).

    Table 2 shows the di erent levels o knowledge attainment relating to thelinks between business and ecosystems. The BET 4 module course covers:

    Awareness, Understanding and Application in detail, while touching onIntegration and Leadership.

    Levels o attainment o ecosystems in business:Awareness: A broad appreciation o ecosystems and how they might a ectbusiness decision making.

    Understanding: A basic knowledge o some o the issues, with thecompetence to apply this to specifc activities.

    Application: The ability to supplement this basic knowledge o the issueswith the competence to apply this to specifc activities.

    Integration: An in-depth understanding o the issues and expertise inapplying this to the business decision making process.

    Leadership: The ability to help managers across the company operate in away that ully integrates ecosystems in the decision making process.

There is one section or each session, which gives an overall summaryo the session timings, and some basic in ormation in relation to running thetraining course.     The level o ecosystems training needed or any company will vary,depending on the nature o its business, its operating environment, legislativerequirements, and any additional considerations, such as specifc CSR programrequirements or special circumstances. These cannot be addressed by asingle product. There ore, as with any training program, the BET course willbe o most value when tailored to meet the specifc needs o a particular audience. BET is designed as a stand-alone program; however, BET can build

    on relevant training initiatives that are already in place, such as an induction or sustainability program.

    Facilitator talk through the following: The cultural services are the non-material benefits obtained from ecosystems. The tourism i ndustry, for example, relies on these services to attract vacationers. On the other hand, many companies face risks due to the impacts they have on iconicspecies and ecosystems on which people place high ethical or religiousvalue.

    Spiritual and religious value e.g. those derived from sacred landsand rivers,

    Ethical and existence values: The spiritual, religious, aesthetic,intrinsic, existence, or other values people attach to ecosystems,landscapes, or species. This can also include cultural heritagevalues, for example, many societies place high value on themaintenance of either historically important landscapes.

    BET has been developed in a exible way so that companies can customize thematerial to suit their needs. You might consider adding your own corporatelogo, to ensure it looks like a corporate learning tool. You may consider integrating key messages and content within BET, to ensure it is consistentwith your corporate strategy and direction. This could include using your owncase studies/materials, inserting quotes and re erences, signposting to internalmaterials, etc. In order to acilitate this, specifc slides and content that can becustomized are identifed by the ollowing text [Customize]. The [Customize]tag is shown on main slides and within the Facilitator Notes. In addition,certain activities allow or a number o di erent options, only one o whichshould be used within a particular training course and additional notes. Theseare identifed by the bold green text.

    The Facilitator Notes are made in such a way that pro essionals with a goodbackground in environment and sustainability are able to deliver the courseby themselves, and tailor it to their specifc needs (please re er to the aboveCustomization section).

    We suggest two acilitators deliver the course:

    A specialist with a background in environment and sustainability.This could be a pro essional rom the Sustainable Development,Environment, Health & Sa ety, or Corporate Social ResponsibilityDepartment.

    An experienced acilitator with background in learning anddevelopment. This could be a pro essional rom the TrainingDepartment.

    As Module 3 is more technical, the use o an environmental economist mayhelp present this module more e ectively.

    Additional points or consideration:

    Facilitators should be amiliar with running workshops, and eelconfdent in exploring di erent alternatives or running ice breakers,team quizzes and getting energy into the room through di erentactivities.

    Facilitators should also be amiliar with standard training techniques,such as setting ground rules, and the use o an issues parking lotduring the course o the workshop.

    There are also a number o di erent ways to run the training exercises.Facilitators can split delegates into groups and run team based competitions,or convert some elements o the course, such as the knowledge checks intoquizzes or individuals.

    There are a number o success actors in the implementation o BET that willhelp to ensure the e ectiveness o the learning module.

    Senior support and leadership this ensures that learners are able toimplement any ideas that emerge rom the training, and that employeessee consistent messages across the organization.

    Learning incentives there are various ways to implement BET themost obvious distinction is between making it a mandatory or voluntaryprogram. I it is a voluntary initiative, in particular, you may like to consider how to best advertise the training.

    Learner support help individual learners to align thinking rom theprogram into their daily activities/responsibilities, and trans er learning tothe workplace.

    The ollowing table suggests three di erent options or running BET:

    As a standalone 2.5 day course.

    As with any training program, it is important to monitor BET and assess itsimpact. Most companies will already have their own evaluation systems inplace, and there ore we have just highlighted some overall considerationsbelow:

    Take up: how many people completed the training, at what level/with whatresponsibilities.

    Learner response: what was the immediate eedback rom attendees?

    Learning: perhaps some time a ter the program, attendees can review whatthey have learned, and assess how much they have retained.

    Behavior: what has changed in employee behavior or in company conductas a result o the program?

    An example o a course evaluation document is shown in the Annex or theseguidelines.

    Di erent people will need a blend o training and pro essional development,depending on their skills, experience, roles and responsibilities. Further supportin their development may include:
