Here’s all the information you need to make your quiz a huge success!

Wednesday 11 May 2011 is the big night! Hold a quiz in your local pub and take part in the event of the year.

Have fun with your friends and family. Support your local pub. Raise funds for a great cause. It’s easy.

01 Organiser Booklet

Here’s how:

1. Register on www.BigPubQuiz.org and we’ll provide you with lots of tips and materials to make your evening a huge success – as well as issuing you with the quiz questions nearer the time.

2. Get your friends, families, colleagues, customers, and other contacts to form teams of 4-6 people and come along. Ask them to make a donation to the Family Holiday Association in order to take part.

3. Have fun!

And remember – for quiz organisers registered on www.BigPubQuiz.org there are some great prizes to be won!

* We’re trying to get as many people as possible to hold a quiz on that night. If it isn’t convenient, by all means choose a different evening that week - you’ll have to set your own questions, though!

Any questions?

You’re helping give disadvantaged children and their families a much needed seaside break, so thanks!

Raise as much as you and your friends can manage – it all makes a difference! We’re encouraging people to aim to raise at least £100.

Change Lives The Family Holiday Association was founded in 1975 and since then has helped give thousands of severely disadvantaged children and their families a much needed break. The families we help are all coping with difficult circumstances such as poverty, inadequate housing, chronic illness or domestic violence. They are referred to us by welfare agents such as GPs and teachers, or by other charities such as Barnardo’s and the NSPCC.

A break away from home…

• Strengthens family relationships, improves communication, and increases family stability

• Improves wellbeing and reduces stress, giving parents and carers time away from daily struggles

• Provides the opportunity to learn new skills and offers a new perspective, which can then improve employability

• Gives children the chance to create memories they can share with friends, which can boost their self esteem, leading to improvements in school work and attendance

Raising money for the Family Holiday Association

What’s it all for?

You will be helping families like the Fowlers… Julie Fowler suffered severe domestic violence at the hands of her ex partner, developing subsequent mental health issues. Having left her partner and now a single parent she is struggling to cope, especially after losing her eldest son in a car accident. Feeling increasingly isolated and having lost all her confidence, Julie’s welfare agent recommended her and her children to us for a holiday.

After the break Julie told us:

“ Since becoming a single Mum I lost some confidence in my abilities to cope on my own. This holiday proved I can cope. It has given me a great boost and optimism for the future.”

The story featured is true, but names have been changed to respect the family’s privacy

Most pubs have held quizzes or similar events before, so will know all about the logistics of holding an event of this kind.

If your quiz is being held in another kind of venue – such as a community hall or sports club, and this is the first quiz held there you might like to check our FAQs just to make sure you’ve got everything properly planned.

Venues need to register online. If you are organising the quiz but are not on the staff at your chosen venue, then you should either get your venue to register, or offer to do it for them. The information you will need is:

• Manager’s name

• Pub/venue name

• Pub/venue address including postcode

• Venue phone number

• An indication of the maximum number of people who can take part at that venue

Register online at www.BigPubQuiz.org

Once you register we will need to approve it (this is usually done the same day, but occasionally might take longer). You’ll receive an email with your log-in details once we’ve approved the venue, and then you can personalise your quiz.

Registered quizzes will appear on the interactive map on the website. People using the website will be able to see your quiz and send you a message if they would like to be involved. This is done securely – your details will not be revealed to anyone until you do it yourself.

First of all, don’t worry. Pub quizzes are one of the most popular UK pastimes, so you should be able to fill your venue with teams.

Ask your good friends first. You shouldn’t need to twist their arms too much.

The website www.BigPubQuiz.org has a range of posters and leaflets you can download. And you can join us on Twitter and Facebook, which are an ideal way of spreading the word amongst your friends.

Huge thanks for getting involved. It’s going to be a blast!

How do I get people to take part?

In 2010 the inaugural World’s Biggest Pub Quiz was held in aid of the Family Holiday Association. The event was a great success, with nearly 400 venues across the UK registered to take part.

There were even some venues taking part overseas! We had:

• Quizzes held on Thomson Airways flights (the World’s Highest Quiz)

• A quiz held underwater in Sharm el Sheikh (the World’s Lowest Quiz)

• A quiz on board a Royal Navy cruiser off the coast of Somalia

There were also quizzes held for MPs at the House of Commons and mini-quizzes on First Great Western trains.

Let’s make it even bigger and better this year!
