STORYLINES

BACK IN THE SADDLESophomore quarterback Bailey Zappe directs the offense after starting nine games as a true freshman. He set school season records for com-pletions (150), attempts (266) and yards (1,548), while also setting single game records for completions and attempts against #6 Central Arkan-sas on Oct. 7, 2017, going 30-for-45 for 248 yards. In the season-open-er against Southwest Baptist, Zappe completed 21-of-31 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns, the second-most in school history. Last week against #14 McNeese he set the school record with 348 passing yards and once again threw for three touchdowns.

FILLING BIG SHOESSophomore linebacker Langston Tunson patrols the middle linebacker spot held for four years by the late, two-time All-America selection Gar-rett Dolan, who finished his career ranked seventh all-time in FCS history in tackles. Tunson is leading the nation in tackles with 17.5 per game to go along with three sacks and an interception. In the Sept. 8 loss to Mc-Neese, he tied Dolan’s school record of 19 tackles, which Dolan achieved on two occasions last season.

GROUND & POUNDSophomore running back Dreshawn Minnieweather ranks ninth in the nation with 126.0 rushing yards per game and has scored three touch-downs. He became the first HBU player to record back-to-back 100-yard performances, rushing for 146 yards, the fourth most in school history, in the Sept. 8 loss to McNeese, after running for 106 and a score in the opener against Southwest Baptist on Sept. 1. Although Minnieweather has a bruising style, he had a 42-yard touchdown run in the opener and broke free for a 57-yard gain against McNeese.

MIDAS TOUCHJunior wide receiver Jeremy Smith, a transfer from Arizona State, has made the most of his targets. Through the first two games, he has made three catches for 14 yards -- all of them going for touchdowns.

MARKET CORNEREDThe Huskies have a pair of All-Southland Conference selections at cor-nerback in seniors Raphael Lewis and Derek Broussard. Lewis was a first-team all-conference selection last year, as well as a preseason all-confer-ence pick this year. He recorded four interceptions in 2017, leading the league with two returned for touchdowns, including a 96-yard return for the longest play in HBU history. Broussard was a second-team selection in 2016, but received a medical redshirt after missing all of 2017 with injuries. Lewis ranks second, while Broussard ranks third in HBU history in pass breakups. Lewis added his third career pick-six in the season-opener against Southwest Baptist, with a 36-yard return in the second quarter.

DR. DREJunior defensive end Andre Walker, a CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-Southland Conference First Team selection, has aspirations to be a neurosurgeon and spent his summer at an internship with Colum-bia Medical School. He led all Southland Conference defensive linemen with 65 tackles, ranked sixth with 14.5 tackles for loss and tied for 16th with 4.0 sacks last year. In the season-opener against Southwest Baptist, Walker made six tackles and against McNeese all three of his tackles went for losses, including a sack.

COACHING MOVESHBU has four new members on its coaching staff, including both coor-dinators. Jeff Mills takes over the defensive after Charlie Camp depart-ed for UTSA. Each of the new members of the offensive staff have Texas Tech ties, led by coordinator and quarterbacks coach Zach Kittley, special teams coordinator and running backs coach Tyler Schovanec and offen-sive line coach Jared Kaster.

REMEMBERING DOLANHBU linebacker Garrett Dolan passed away on May 6, just days before walking across the stage to receive his degree from HBU. He earned six All-America honors over the last two seasons, was a four-time All-South-land Conference selection, leading the league in tackles as a junior and senior, and finished his career ranked seventh all-time in the FCS in tack-les. This season, members of the HBU football team will wear a special sticker on the back of their helmets with the number 40 in honor of Dolan. Tonight, Dolan’s number is being recognized as HBU football’s first “Honored Number.” The number is not retired, but will not be worn this season and in future seasons, will only be worn by an HBU player who earns the right to wear it.
