Emergency School ClosingsThe School District is concerned about student andemployee safety during inclement weather. The delayedopening or early closing of school due to emergency orinclement weather will be determined as early as possible. All parents will be notified of delays andcancellations by a pre-recorded message to theirprimary contact telephone numbers via theALERTNOW Notification Service. Information can alsobe obtained on the district’s web, Facebook or Twitterpages, or by calling the Information Line at 412-854-8407.Information will also be called into the three Pittsburghtelevision stations—KDKA, WTAE and WPXI. The decisionto delay, cancel or early dismiss school due to inclementweather conditions is made by the Superintendent inconjunction with the Municipality and the National WeatherService, with the safety of our students paramount in thedecision making process.

If school is cancelled due to inclement weather, allBethel Park Recreation Department activities held inschool facilities are also cancelled for that day.

Two Hour DelaysSometimes the passage of time will enable road crews toclear the roads and allow busses to warm up and transportchildren safely to school. If a Two Hour Delay is called, students should arrive at their bus stops or at school twohours later than usual.

On days when a two hour delay is called, the district willoperate a Modified Kindergarten Schedule as follows:

• Morning Kindergarten will attend from 11:20 AM to 1 PM

• Afternoon Kindergarten will attend from 2 to 3:40 PM

Modified Kindergarten equalizes both sessions to 1 hour,40 minutes of instruction.

Parents, please be reminded that on days with delays, building staff is also on that delay, so there may not beanyone at the front door to let your child into the building, should they arrive too early. Please do not drop your childoff at school before the delayed starting time.

In the event of an emergency closing, all parents shouldhave prior arrangements made for their children. Childrenshould be aware of what to do, or where to go, in the eventparents are not home at the time of the emergencydismissal.

Getting Questions Answered/Concerns Addressed

A primary responsibility of the Bethel Park School District is to ensurethat individual members of the community and student body receive fairand equitable resolution of problems, which arise involving the servicesprovided by the School District. This policy defines the steps by whichinquiries, concerns, and/or questions involving any aspect of the District’sday-to-day operation, administrative matters, transportation, or financesare to be addressed.

1. Questions or concerns should be resolved as close as possible to theirsource (e.g. a parent/guardian of a student should first make anappointment to meet with the teacher if an instructional concern isinvolved. If a curriculum concern is involved, a parent/guardian of astudent should first make an appointment to meet with the student’sprincipal, department chairperson or guidance counselor). This isnecessary since the members of the staff who are closest to the concernnormally have greater knowledge of the details involved.

2. If a satisfactory resolution is not obtained at the immediate level, theindividual with the concern should take the matter to the attention of thenext level authority (e.g. the principal if a satisfactory resolution has notbeen achieved with a teacher, or the appropriate Central Office personnelif a principal has not been successful in resolving the matter). Thesuperintendent is the last level for administrative remedy prior to anycontacts with the School Board.

3. If a timely and equitable resolution of the questions and concernsregarding School District policy is not forthcoming, the parent/guardianor citizen may petition the School Board to provide an informal hearingby three of its members, selected by the School Board, in order toexpedite its resolution or address a perceived injustice.

If the recommendation of the three-member School Board committee isnot acceptable to either party, a hearing may be requested before aquorum of the full School Board.

If the entire School Board, however, is already satisfied with thedisposition of the matter by the three-member committee, it may refuseto grant the hearing.

The concerns being addressed in this policy would not normally involvelegal matters. If legal concerns are perceived to exist, other avenues forredress must be explored. Resolutions of concern under this policy shallbe considered personal and confidential.
