THE KINGSPOINT NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION NEWS

We appreciate our neighbors who have responded already to the Neighborhood Association's September membership appeal with their contributions and offers to volunteer. We are a community of volunteers, and everyone's efforts make a difference. Our new treasurer, Kirsten Kellogg, is happy to receive your membership contribution as you are able to get it to her.

We are pleased to tell you that our community was awarded a 2015 James City Clean County Environmental Matching Grant to help with the costs of upgrading our neighborhood entrance area. Steve Houff and Benson Dexter will plant two white 'Natchez' Crepe Myrtle trees this fall, paid for with grant monies. We will also purchase and plant, with volunteers, 300 new perennial Daffodil bulbs along the top edge of the mound at our entrance. The grant will also pay for the bulbs, which we will purchase from Brent and Becky's Bulbs in Gloucester.

Our matching funds will pay for 15 new 'Andorra' Juniper shrubs, which Steve and Benson will plant for us this coming spring. We appreciate their efforts to shop for a very good price on these trees and shrubs, and for their volunteer labor to plant them and remove older, diseased plant materials.

Our neighbor, landscape architect Gordon Chappell, designed our entrance area about 15 years ago and continues to consult with us on its upkeep. He and Master Gardener, Emeritus, Peggy Manning, consulted with us on plant choices for the grant proposal. Gordon has advised us that many of our existing plants will need to be replaced within the next five years, and is already discussing possible alternatives with us. We have a small 'Rainy Day Fund' in anticipation of those expenses.

This is our Fiftieth Anniversary year as a neighborhood, and so is a good time for each of us to do what we can to make our neighborhood neater and more beautiful. Whatever you do to make your own property more attractive from the street is noticed, and appreciated, by those neighbors who pass your home each day. Many neighbors also pick up litter on their walks. Every small gesture helps. Our county has a number of codes which address how properties must be maintained. Any neighbor who has concerns about an unkempt property, or old cars parked in a yard or on a neighborhood street, and has not been able to speak with the homeowner; may contact the Zoning Codes Compliance and Enforcement office to request assistance at 253-6671. Any vehicle visible from the street must run and have all necessary tags from the state and county.

You also may want to contact VDOT at 1-800-367-7623 if there is a clogged ditch or pothole on your street which needs attention. We have been speaking with VDOT this summer about widening our entrance to include a dedicated right hand turn lane onto 199E. They are currently in conversation with the county staff and with the National Park Service about this project. You may have noticed that VDOT has been adding gravel to the shoulder to address erosion issues while they investigate our request.

Please plan to join us for a Kingspoint Neighborhood Watch launch meeting with

Community Service Officers from the James City County Police on Wednesday, October 7 at 7 PM, in at the clubhouse. Police officers will discuss a number of security issues both within our neighborhood and in the wider community. They will offer safety tips, inform us of special opportunities for individual assistance, answer your questions, and provide additional Neighborhood Watch materials for those who attend. The JCC police non-emergency number of 253-1800. Our 2016 neighborhood phone directory will be published in January. Please notify Peggy Manning when you know of someone moving in or out near you. Please also visit our website for news and useful links. Our webmistress, Anneliese Brei, regularly updates the website with new information. Please remember, as elections near, no political signs are allowed in yards in Kingspoint. Elizabeth McCoy, President-elect For the Kingspoint Neighborhood Association Board

Clubhouse Entrance Patio Bricks The past few years we have

welcomed many new families to the Kingspoint community. These families may not have thought about or known how to order a brick for the Clubhouse entrance. When we built the Clubhouse we conducted a “Fundraiser” that generated money to furnish the clubhouse. At that time we offered bricks with personal messages, and benches, trees, etc. and raised over $20,000! This time we are ordering only bricks. Personal messages have honored families, children, grandchildren, neighbors, former residents, individuals, who have passed on, and pets. For many of us it has served as a way to remember all the wonderful neighbors who

make Kingspoint what it is. This is also a way to show your pride in your swimmers! Ordering a brick is very simple and easy. We charge $100.00 for a “STANDARD” brick (4”x8”) which allows 15 characters per line (including spaces) and 4 lines of text. (Call me if you want a larger brick, 8”x 8”.)

1. Check out bricks in the patio to get an idea for your brick.

2. Give me a call and I will help you with the wording. (The website where I order has a “brick creator” where I can make a digital brick and email it to you.) This is a very simple process that allows you to see what you are getting.

3. Send a check made out to me, Robert Hanny, for $100.00. I will order your brick, pay for it and when your brick arrives I will cash your check and send the balance, usually $60.00 to the club, (less my expense which includes the brick and shipping). A standard brick usually costs $40.00 depending on how many bricks are in an order.

4. Bricks are usually shipped and received in 3-4 weeks. Weather permitting, I then install the brick.

KINGSPOINT GARDEN CLUB Eeegads, it is already the 20th. This month it will be short. While Ann Hobson won’t be here for the Christmas Tree Lighting, she is willing to be the contact person. Once again, asking parents for help on this as this is primarily for the children of our neighborhood. It is scheduled for November 30, at 7 pm. Help needed, per Ann, is as follows:

Page 5: We are planning to paint the main room of the Kingspoint Crier · 2015. 9. 27. · this whenever they fancy!) x Inventory of Clubhouse kitchen items and list of items that can be

Candles and luminaria - The garden club has slightly used candles for this. Tree – Brad and Yuko do this with the help of me and my husband. Publicity – a notice is put in the Crier and a poster is put up at the entrance. I will do the Crier notice. Candy canes – we use small ones to cut down on the sugar. They have them at CVS. Hot cider and cookies – The Garden club provides these. Personnel needed – Santa, a song leader and at least 2 people to put out luminaria and light them. Song sheets – We have about 18 and need more. A table of contents might help, if you redo them. Ann Hobson has these. Our first meeting on September 8 was well attended. If you were not able to come you missed an absolutely delightful program on attracting birds with water given by Bob Schamerhorn. Our upcoming meeting is October 13. We will be touring Cooke’s gardens to view the fairy garden, shrubs, plants, Christmas Shop and whatever they have at the time, and then eat lunch at the Carrot Tree. We will meet at 10 am at Woodbine Drive and will carpool. This is a great opportunity to tour a local greenhouse and check out holiday decorating ideas, as well as enjoy a nice lunch. Some gardening ideas are to start a compost bin if you haven’t already. The leaves are falling and you can toss them in there to make dirt. Buddy, our dog, dug up around our yew shrubs so we used dirt from the compost bin to fill in the holes. Build a cold frame to extend the growing season. Begin holding back on water and fertilizer on Christmas cactus until buds appear. Move your houseplants indoors before it gets cold. This is a good time to sow many types of wildflower seeds. Stake tall growing autumn blooms. I leave the seed pods for the birds to eat once they dry up. Gather green tomatoes before the frost. Wrap them in paper and store at 60 to 65 degrees F. I hear fried green tomatoes are delicious. Lift tender bulbs

such as elephant ears, dahlias and calla lilies after the first frost if you live in a region where it gets below 20 degrees, which it has done here for a while now. Add well-rotted manure and organic humus to your flowerbeds. Again, the compost bin comes in hand for this and gives you a supply of lovely soil to put in your garden. It will make your plants happy. Root crops such as carrots, radishes and potatoes may be left in the ground well into winter. Mulch heavily and harvest when you need them. Hope you have had a chance to walk our beautiful neighborhood and enjoy the beginning of fall. Yours in gardening, Mary Grogan [email protected] 258-5861 KINGSPOINT WOMEN’S CLUB Kingpoint Women's Club Meets at the Clubhouse

Virginia Bendura, Loretta Hannum and Anne Allen enjoy refreshments. The members of the Kingpoint Women's Club greeted old and new friends on Tuesday, September 15th. There was a short business meeting and a social hour. Thanks to our hostesses for the September meeting, Nancy

Ryan, Mary Rogers Hill, Pembroke Hoffmeir and Gail Burger. If you missed the meeting, please give your dues ($10.00) to either Ann Hobson or Alice Lasher. Our next meeting will be October 20th at 10:00 at the clubhouse. Our speaker will be Kate Hale, the Director of Emergency Services for James City County. She will give us lots of practical advice of what to do to prepare for and endure storms, snows, power outages and other emergencies. She was for many years the director of Emergency Services for Dade County including the year 1992 when hurricane Andrew struck Homestead, Florida a few miles south of Miami. If you know of a neighbor who might like to attend, please invite them to join us. Better yet, offer to bring them with you to the meeting. The hostesses for our October meeting are Jean Hess, Dottie Nichols, and Charlotte McCarter. Ann Hobson and Alice Lasher, co-presidents

NEW NEIGHBORS: Welcome! *Please let Cathy Adams (as well as directory and membership) know when someone moves into the neighborhood: 220-2486, or [email protected]. Karl Kroenlein, Ruth Ann Redbird, and their family moved to 109 Wake Robin Road from Roanoke where Karl was employed as a veterinarian working with small animals and exotic pets. Karl begins his job at Colonial Veterinary Clinic (3280 Ironbound Rd) on September 28th. His wife, Ruth Ann, is an 8-year roller derby veteran with a Ph.D. in biochemistry. She currently works as a stay-at-home mom to 3 year old twin boys Tyler and Alexander "Xander" Kroenlein. Karl and Ruth Ann lived in Williamsburg for nearly 5 years during the late 90s and early 2000s and are glad to finally be "home".

I believe we have more new neighbors on Pinepoint, Archers Hope and Black Oak. As soon as I receive information from these new residents, I will happily introduce them to you. If we have any other new neighbors, please let me know. New neighbors, please contact me @ [email protected] with your email addresses so that I can add you to the Kingspoint Crier address group which will enable you to receive the monthly newsletter and any news blasts that I am requested to send. I can then pass on your information to our directory editor. If you are in need of a directory, we can arrange that too. Please send me a paragraph about your family that you would like for me to include in the newsletter to introduce you to your neighbors. I look forward to hearing from you- Thank you, Cathy Adams (757-220-2486)

NEIGHBORLY REMINDERS: I have received several requests to broadcast messages via email to the neighborhood. While I understand how upsetting some situations can be, I plan to dispense information to the masses that impact the neighborhood. In this section, are a number of ‘gentle reminders’ from your friends and neighbors. I shall also include information that might be helpful to the community.

Now that school is back in session, we remind everyone to watch out for children walking to and from the school bus. Our narrow streets and lack of sidewalks make it difficult sometimes for our kids as they wait for the bus, and for drivers who need to pass them safely.

Parents who wait in parked vehicles for their children are reminded to please pull off of the street and not obstruct the normal flow of traffic or block the view of other drivers at the intersections. We wish a safe and successful school year for all of our neighborhood children and teens.

Students and parents, please check the bus stop for lost items and trash left behind.

FACEBOOK PAGE Kingspoint neighborhood has its own Facebook Page to add info, photos, items for sale, invite neighbors to a last minute movie or bbq, post last minute updates for swim meets, cancellations, etc. This Page is a "Closed Group", which means you have to "request" to be added to the Page (this prevents just anyone from joining the group and posting spam). But all residents are encouraged to request an invite! Here is how you do this: Type in the following URL address https://www.facebook.com/groups/2118520156 32122/ . It will say it's a closed group, and then in the upper right corner, under the photo, you click on ‘JOIN GROUP’. The Admin for the group will approve all KP residents! Please feel free to post "hello's", add photos, etc.

BOOK CLUB Book worms wanted! This group meets every other month and meets in the evening. We've had some great discussion (and food)! To be added to the list, please contact Yvette Mardis at [email protected] . Crier Delivery and Notes f/m the Editor: Many thanks to Ray Lee who prints the copies for those who do not take the electronic version. If your neighbor mentions that they are not receiving their electronic version of the Crier, please have them email me @ [email protected] as their email address may have changed, and I have not been notified.- Thank you. CRIER ADVERTISING-FYI The advertising policy for the Kingspoint Crier is as follows: the charge for business related ads will be $10/edition for a business card ($100/yr.); $25/edition for anything larger and the space will be limited to a reasonable size to be determined by the Crier editor and space constraints of each edition; small ads of one, or two sentences, from residents and non-resident club members are free as a community service; non-profit and children's ads in the Crier are free.
