e Newly RestoredPtarmigan Dining Room

::The Ptarmigan Dining Room::

Rehabilitation of the Many Glacier Hotel began in 2001 with an emphasis on stabilizing the structure and restoring the building’s exterior. Interior work began in 2010 on the north half of the hotel including the dining room.

Designed and constructed by the Great Northern Railway, the Many Glacier Hotel welcomed its rst guests in 1915. Dubbed the “Show Place of the Rockies,” guests spent their days hiking, horseback riding, and auto-touring, while returning every evening to the elegance of a grand hotel.

In contrast to the Swiss-inuenced exterior design of the hotel, the Railway selected an eclectic mixture of interior design elements and decorations for the lobby and dining room. Festooned with animal pelts, bison skulls, and ne oil paintings, the lobby featured plain furniture sparsely placed around the large camprelike replace and a naturalistic fountain rising from the basement through the lobby oor. A maze of various shaped Japanese lanterns dotted the volumi-nous space with bright colors and exotic symbols and subtly reminded guests of its Great Northern Railway’s steamship services to Japan and the Far East.

Designers carried the same mix of décor into the dining room. Festive Japanese lanterns and shades hung from the ceiling and a pergola along the window wall provided a more human scale to the room. e massive stone replace lling one end of the dining room echoed the rustic outdoors while Blackfeet Indian ledger art and grand landscape paintings lined the interior walls. A lowered ceiling and other modications over the last eighty years turned the grand interior space from impressive and open to stark and uninteresting.

Now, with the removal of later additions and restoration of historic features and materials, today’s diners have the opportunity to once again experience the space as it was originally intended. Take a moment to look around you. Overhead, the exposed trusses that might appear industrial and out-of-place in this elegant dining room, allude to the building’s design by railway architects and engineers more accustomed to designing bridges. A re-installed pergola shades diners from the afternoon sun and modern light xtures, with shapes taken from the room’s original colorful Japanese paper lanterns and parasols, illuminate the space. e same original paintings commissioned by the railway grace the walls. Missing only one important feature—the Blackfoot Indian ledger art—the dining room appears much as it did to the guests of almost a century ago.

Since 1916, the American people have entrusted the National Park Service with the care of their national parks. e National Park Service’s rehabilitation of the Many Glacier Hotel and Dining Room ensures that this important representation of rustic architecture will survive to be enjoyed by current and future generations.

A portion of this project was funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellsh, or eggs may increase your risk of foodborne illness.
