We support the young people of Glasgow to make the most of their abilities and interests by providing them with fantastic opportunities to foster a lifelong love of learning.

Established in June 2013, Glasgow Children's University was the first local Children's University centre to be established in Scotland under the umbrella of Children's University Trust Scotland. It is managed by the University of Strathclyde and works in partnership with Glasgow City Council, member schools

and other organisations. Currently membership is open to schools in the Glasgow City area for children aged 5 to 14.

Darnley Ambassadors (By Lindsey McBride, Principal Teacher)

Darnley Primary School and Visual Impairment Unit joined Children’s University at the beginning of 2017 and

our P7 pupils quickly began earning and logging credits through a range of activities both within and out with

school. We were delighted when four of our pupils; Amy Paisley, Hannah Lyle, Zoe Cairns and Robyn Wong

were awarded their Bronze award at the spectacular graduation ceremony in June 2017.

Since then, the pupils’ enthusiasm for learning and earing credits has gone from strength to strength. This

session, the number of pupils involved has increased dramatically as we extended the opportunity to our pupils

in Primary 6 as well as Primary 7.

In order to provide support to our new members, we appointed six Children’s University Ambassadors. In

addition to the role being awarded to our graduates from the previous summer, it was also awarded to Rory

Watson and Chloe Lee who had also shown huge commitment and dedication to learning and had logged an

impressive number of credits on their ePassport. The children were awarded badges at the school’s Achievers

Assembly.

The role of CU Ambassador involves keeping our members informed of activities and learning opportunities,

helping others log their credits online, giving advice, recommending learning destinations, helping with

organisation and, of course, working hard towards their next award.

Our ambassadors feel that taking on the responsibility of the role has helped them develop many skills including

problem solving, team building, organisation and confidence. The children speak very highly of their

experiences both as members of the CU and of their ambassador role.

Hannah told us: “I enjoy running clubs, visiting learning destinations and being a role model to other members of

the CU. My goals for the future are to achieve my Silver Award and continue being a part of the CU throughout

high school.” Amy echoed this sentiment and added: “Being part of the CU will definitely go on my real

university application when I’m older!”

Our ambassadors have already helped many of our pupil’s log enough credits to achieve awards and we are

looking forward to seeing lots of our pupils graduate this year.

Do you have your own Children’s University noticeboard or do you run an ambassador

programme like Darnley Primary? Tell us about the way you like to run Children’s

University in your school by emailing the team at: [email protected].

Santander Workshops

Following our successful Santander workshop at St Francis of Assisi Primary in December, we offered more

dates to the rest of our members schools. The dates filled up fast and on the 15th February the second

workshop was held for pupils at St Timothy’s Primary.

The workshop involved discussing the roles of banks, spending and saving, managing money, digital money

and then pupils created posters on what they had learnt during the session.

We still have a few dates left for our Santander workshop so please email: [email protected] to

book your slot before they are gone!

New Learning Destinations

We have welcomed a number of new Learning Destinations since the Winter. The full list of Learning Destinations can be viewed on the ePassport: https://epassport.f2uni.com/Public/Login.

500 Words is a Children’s University activity where children write an original story

on any subject or theme in 500 words of fewer and submit it online. The winner will get their story read live on the radio by a superstar celebrity…like Julie

Walters or Tom Hiddleston. Each year, 10 million Radio 2 listeners hear, read and love these stories. Here is an entry from a Glasgow Children’s University member:

"Good afternoon creatures!! I'm Goldie Eagle and welcome to today's final of the Roller Derby Animal World

Cup! Brought to you live, from Florence Italy. The teams today are South Africa, who have won it three times in a row and Scotland, who have never made it to the final before.

So far George Giraffe and Charlie Cheetah, from South Africa, have scored a ginormous 496 points. Fiona Fox

and Ursula Unicorn, for Scotland, are just behind with a whopping 491 points.

You find us here at the last jam where Ursula is going up against Charlie. Ellie Elephant, a blocker for South Africa, has been sent off to the penalty bench for thwacking Helen Highland-Coo in the face with her trunk.

Ursula is gathering speed, she has barged past Holly Hippo and Zerelda Zebra to become lead jammer.

Meanwhile, Bella Badger and Wendy Wolf are following Helen's instructions by blocking Charlie from getting through the pack and scoring more points.

Ursula goes round ONE time. Listen to the crowd screaming, they can't believe their eyes. Ursula goes round a SECOND time, the South African blockers just watch her whizz by.

Ursula gets round a THIRD time but oh no, here comes Ellie back from the penalty bench to re-join her fellow South Africans and try to win the game. Scotland only need three more points but will they manage with only 2

more minutes left on the clock?

Charlie has managed to get through the tough Scottish blockers but will she be able to catch up with Ursula who is speeding around the track just like a cheetah?

Charlie is about to overtake Ursula on her fourth lap but who's this coming in from the side? Charlie has fallen

over Fiona Fox and has her foot slipped over the line? I think so, the flamingo ref has sent her to the back of the pack where she shall have to fight her way back through to the front.

Ursula has gone round a FOURTH time. Hear the boos from the South African supporters.

Ursula has gone round a FIFTH time, just dodging George to get through.

I can't believe it, how is this possible? That flamingo with the speedometer says Ursula has just broken the land-speed record for roller-skating.

And Ursula makes it round a SIXTH time and now Scotland are in the lead. They might just win if Charlie doesn't

get through.

Ursula has just signalled to end the last jam and it is all over. The Roller Derby Animal World Cup is finished and Scotland have won it for the first time ever.

The crowd goes wild! All the Scotland fans are running out on to the track and are starting their own roller disco with Ursula and the rest of the team. Look over there at that grey squirrel comforting that little red squirrel who is

crying her eyes out with joy.

Thank you all for coming, see you at next year's Cup in France. Goodbye!"
