Dear Parishioners,
On the back page of this week’s
THE TABLET there is an interesting
article, “From Ashes to Valentines”
by Carol Powell. It is extraordinary that Ash
Wednesday falls on Valentine’s Day this year
because the last time it happened was in 1945!
And while all Catholics may feel “cheated” not
being able to enjoy a steak dinner at a favorite
restaurant on Ash Wednesday this year the columnist states: “St. Valentine gave up his life for love, which is
the highest act of charity, and on Ash Wednesday, we receive a sign on our foreheads which connotes that
we are willing to change so that we can practice more love.”
“Practice more love” I believe is a wonderful way to enter these next forty days called Lent. As much as the
Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving may seem hard and difficult to keep, maybe if we look at
them as great opportunities to practice more love we can experience a good and holy Lent.
Here in the parish we have chosen a Lenten theme: “Compassion In Action” to
practice more love as individuals, spouses, families and fellow parishioners. In
the sanctuary space there is a cross which symbolizes the redeeming love of
Jesus as well as the words of the Lord: “For I was hungry and you gave me
food …” (Mt. 25:35). As part of our parish Lenten practices, next week on the
First Sunday of Lent, you are invited to take home a brown grocery bag as part
of our Lenten Food Drive.
Each week we will list a number of non-perishable items to purchase at the supermarket and place in the
grocery bag in your home. The bag is a visible reminder for you and all your family members, especially the
children, to remember the poor and needy during Lent. On the weekend of March 17th/18th everyone is
asked to return the grocery bag filled with non-perishables that will supply our own food pantry as well as in
local parishes. Please do not bring the filled grocery bags to church before March 17th/18th because there will
be no space to store them. Instead please keep to the schedule as part of your discipline of almsgiving.
I want to thank the Parish Pastoral Council for its support to our parish outreach in the past and now during
Lent. I thank you in advance for your generosity during this holy season to practice more love towards those
we know and those we do not know.
God bless you.

FUEL COLLECTION. The annual “Fuel
Collection” is taking place at this time. There is an
additional orange envelope in the church packet that
requests your generous contribution to defray the
costs of heating the parish buildings. Needless to say,
like your homes, everyone is hit hard during the
winter months. We ask every parishioner to be as
generous as possible so that our parish buildings may
remain warm and comfortable for everybody. Extra
orange “Fuel Collection” envelopes are in the church
today for those who did not receive an envelope in the
mail. Thank you in advance for your help.
Lenten Regulations
ABSTINENCE: The church requires all the faithful
who have reached their 14th year of age to abstain
totally from meat on ASH WEDNESDAY and ALL
FRIDAYS of Lent.
FASTING: All the faithful
between the ages of 18 & 59
inclusive are also bound to
observe the fasting regulations on Ash Wednesday
and Good Friday. This practice involves limiting
oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food
between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken
on 2 other occasions in the course of the day. Fasting,
almsgiving and prayer are the three disciplines of
Lent. The faithful and the elect should undertake
these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and
preparation for Baptism or of renewal of Baptism at
Easter.
THE WORD AMONG US is a periodical that offers
daily reflections on the Scriptures
proclaimed at Mass. This year there is
a special Lenten edition entitled, “The
Promise of Lent,” that is on sale in the
Gathering Space today. What a unique
way to enter the holy season of Lent by
reading the daily reflection and/or with
the family. The listed price is $5.95 but
at Our Lady of the Snows they are available for only
$2.00. Please use the white envelope and return your
payment in the collection or at the Parish Office.
GOLDEN AGE FRIENDSHIP CLUB’S
next meeting will be on Wednesday,
February 28th in Bishop Chappetto Hall.
There will be no meetings the next two
weeks. New members are welcome.
UPCOMING MEETINGS
VOCATIONS THOUGHT
The Parish Vocations Committee would like to share
these words of Saint John Eudes:
"Undertake courageously great tasks for God's glory,
to the extent that he'll give you power and grace for
his purpose. Even though you can do nothing on your
own, you can do all things in him. His help will never
fail you if you have confidence in His goodness. Place
your entire physical and spiritual welfare in hands.
Abandon to the fatherly concern of his divine
providence every care for your health, reputation,
property, and business; for those near to you; for your
past sins; for your soul's progress in virtue and love of
him; for your life, death and especially your salvation
and eternity - in a word, all your cares. Rest in the
assurance that in His pure goodness, He will watch
with particular tenderness over all your cares and
responsibilities, arranging all things for the greatest
good."
