Feast of Pentecost Celeste Mueller, D.Min

Since they have an active role to play in the whole life of the Church, lay people are

not only bound to penetrate the world with a Christian spirit, but are also called to

be witnesses to Christ in all things in the midst of human society. (GS 43)

When we hear the stories of the Spirit poured out on the disciples on

Pentecost, do we recall that the Spirit—the fullness of God’s own self—has already

been poured into each of us at our Baptism?

When we imagine the anointing with fire that the disciples experienced, do

the embers of our own hearts kindle and burn more brightly?

When we consider with wonder that the crowds could hear and

understand the preaching of the disciples in their own tongues, do we realize that

our openness to the action of the Spirit in us is visible and understandable to

others far more powerfully than any words we might use to communicate our

faith?

The gifts given in Pentecost are given to us—wisdom, understanding,

knowledge, counsel, fortitude, holiness and awe—in wondrous diversity. They

unite us in one Spirit, and equip us to cooperate with the Spirit in renewing the

face of the earth. The Spirit enables us to live fully the call that we have heard

each Sunday of this Easter season in the words of Gaudium et spes inviting us to

be God’s instruments of transformation: penetrating the whole world with a

Christian Spirit and being witnesses to Christ in all things!

PRACTICE

♦ Rejoice in awe at the astounding gift of God power and presence in each of us

♦ Trust that gift in yourself; to each the gift is given for some service!

♦ Take inventory of the “worlds” you occupy in family, community,

neighborhood, work, church, society. Notice where your witness is needed.

Pray that the Spirit will enter those places of need as much through the

authenticity of your being as through the good deeds you may do.

Be especially attentive to notice and call out the gifts of the Spirit in those you

meet, especially in those we serve at St. Vincent’s who live in poverty and

vulnerability and may not be able to see the gift in themselves. To EACH the Spirit

is given for some service!

ACA Awards $20,000 Grant to St. Vincent’s

Our parish’s support of the 2012 Annual Catholic Appeal was an important factor in recently being awarded a $20,000 grant to finish the tuckpointing of the church. Thanks to all of you who participated. Now it is time to make your pledge to the 2013 ACA, which kicks off at St. Vincent’s this weekend, May 18th-19th and runs through June 1st-2nd. Our goal is 100% participation, even if you can only give a small amount. In addition to directly benefitting St. Vincent’s, the ACA supports homeless services, parish food pantries, emergency assistance, senior citizens and Catholic education, including St. Frances Cabrini Academy. Please look for your pledge cards in the back of church. Your participation makes a difference.

T h e m e n o f St. Vincent DePaul Parish will offer a n o t h e r A C T S weekend ret reat

Gaudium et spes:

“The Church has always had the duty of scrutinizing

the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the

light of the Gospel. Thus, in language intelligible to

each generation, she can respond to the perennial

questions which people ask about this present life

and the life to come, and about the relationship of

the one to the other. We must therefore recognize

and understand the world in which we live.” (GS #4)

What do you identify as the “signs of the times”?

When you scrutinize the signs of the times do you

tend to hope or to wring your hands?

How can we support one another with faith and

courage so that together we can confront the world

in which we live—neither condemning it, nor

embracing it blindly—and discover in the light of the

gospel the hope and possibilities it holds.
