The Word

of the Lord

I n today’s Gospel Jesus tells his disciples, “When you have done all you have been commanded, say: We are unprofitable servants; we have only done what we were obliged to do.” This week, please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to bring the love and mercy of Jesus to those who feel left out and abandoned, for indeed we are only doing “what we are obliged to do”.

This week, at the 9:30 a.m. Family Mass, the Liturgy of the Word with Children begins. This is a worship experience especially geared for children. It mirrors the worship experience of the larger community, with a style that is engaging and interactive. Jesus himself recognized that children have a pure spirituality, and he made them the primary spiritual model for all believers. Liturgy of the Word with Children is not formal religious education, nor is it intended to substitute for attendance at religious education sessions. Rather, it should be considered a partner to religious education programs. Both are important for a child’s spiritual development, just as continuing faith formation and growth in spirituality are important to adults. The Word of God has a message that is as relevant and fitting for children as it is for adults. The children, however, often fail to hear the message simply because the adult vocabulary is beyond their comprehension. Liturgy of the Word with Children offers an experience for the children to hear Scripture in words they understand and to share their own understanding of God’s Word. Celebrating the Liturgy of the Word in this way is an empowering experience, giving children a foundation for understanding and appreciating Scripture. The children not only become comfortable with hearing and discussing God’s Word but also gain an understanding of and appreciation for their liturgical heritage as Catholics.

Get your Hilliard’s Chocolate Bars! We continue selling chocolate bars for $2 each after all Masses. Proceeds help us to defray the costs of running the Spring Celebration/Fundraiser which we are planning to take place April 25.

From the Desk of Father John

Today’s readings are encouraging personal grit. Paul’s letter to Timothy makes clear the challenges that faith demands. With God as the source of our strength, we are called to respond with courageous service. The apostles ask for an increase in faith in the Gospel. Earlier in this chapter Jesus lays out a set of challenging expectations; this prompts the apostles to recognize the need for more faith. The significant way in which these readings touched me was as a reminder of how difficult it is to truly resign control to God. My personality leaves me wanting to decide how things will progress. I am more than willing to take on the role of co-creator with my God. I am less eager to accept the moments when events are not under my influence. When I imagine myself as a person in the time of Habakkuk, I find myself accepting his concern about societal breakdown, but his message of the end of the kingdom and pending Babylonian domination are not something that I would welcome ultimately trusting in God. I do not think that I could have the same pride in being a prisoner for the Word that Paul reports even with the gifts of the Spirit as a source of strength. We are on our way with faith formation. There is a new program that we presented the parents last week and this week the children at the 9:30 will leave for their liturgy of the Word in the hall and then return to Mass . It makes the readings real for them and at their own level. We have some teachers who will be making this happen. Receiving Communion under both species seems to be going well. The Eucharistic ministers have been faithful in showing up but in order for it to be organized we have to have your presence there. If you cannot be there to give out communion please call the office this is most important , thank you. The grand annual is under way. Please be generous in what you are able to give. No one realizes some of the bills we have in the near future we are going to address this with the parish so you are aware. I am always amazed at the bill for snow plowing and your safety which totals 30,000. Don’t forget the walk for hunger sponsored by St Vincent DePaul. Thank you to all the speakers last week at the Masses, you did a great job. Our prayers and condolences go out to Marie and Barry Sullivan on the death of Barry’s brother Jim. The funeral will be on October 11 at 10am I hope down the road to do a presentation on my trip to the Holy Land. It was a lifetime experience. I want to share what I and others experienced. As I said next to my ordination it was over the top. It made the scriptures and what we believe come alive.

Florence Roselle Retiring She was the face of Saint John’s for over twenty years, serving as part time secretary. Florence Rosselle is now retiring. Every time we saw her we knew everything was going to be ok. As I said to Florence you were like the matriarch of our parish and we hate to see you go. Recently, she has had some health issues which have prompted her decision. All in all we as a parish are grateful for her presence and her faithfulness. We wish her the best.

Switzerland & Germany with Oberammergau Passion Play

In a plea to God to be saved from the Bubonic Plague, the citizens of Oberammergau pledged to perform a Passion Play if the town was protected. After no one fell ill, the town maintained their promise. Every ten years, this tiny Bavarian hamlet

expresses their gratitude by performing a Passion Play – a reenactment of the last days of the life of Jesus Christ. First held in 1634, the play is now performed every year ending in zero. Only the residents of Oberammergau act in the play and the dialogue is performed in German. Our trip will be August 30 through September 7, 2020. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the famous passion play and visit two of Europe’s finest destinations. Single $7,949 Double $5,949 each

Laurence Boran, Paul Carroll,

who have recently been called home to God.

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who

have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring

with him those who have fallen asleep. - 1 Thes 4:13-14

Community Corner

All adults are invited to gather to discuss the Sunday Gospel. 10:30 am Parish Library. We are calling this opportunity God, Coffee and Conversation. It is a drop in activity. There is no registration or weekly commitment. We literally have a cup

of coffee and discuss the day’s Gospel. Come and encounter a friendly group of people who simply discuss what faith means in daily life. This week the Lord reassures us that even a little faith is powerful. He talks about the mustard seed. When you are in the grocery store, take a look at one! Join us to talk about faith and what the Lord says about it.

Join the Planning Committee for our Parish Fundraiser! Come to our first meeting on Tuesday, October 22 at 6pm at St. John’s. All are invited to help with raffles, food, prizes and set-up/tear down. We need your help!

Parish Health Ministry Hearing Screening Most of us hardly ever think about our hearing until something goes wrong. Many Americans do not realize how critical hear-ing health is to our lives, how important preventative care for our ears can be to long-term health outcomes, or what the options for treatment are once we do have hearing loss. From babies crying to low-flying planes, all kinds of common noises can have an effect on our hear-ing health – so awareness is important no matter who you are. Over 20% of Americans are affected by hearing loss and/or tinnitus, but so many hesitate to treat their loss, or don’t know where to begin. Unfortunately, many people are un-der informed about the serious consequences of neglecting their hearing health, and the deep impact it can have on their daily lives. In fact, most people wait almost 7 years before pursuing treatment! That’s 7 years of social events and important life moments that people miss out on because of their untreated hearing loss issues. We have come a long way from ear trumpets, but many people don’t realize just how many excellent options for treating hearing loss are available. Admitting to yourself that you are suffering from hearing loss can be difficult enough, and on top of that, many people feel overwhelmed at the idea of treating their loss, and don’t know where to begin. The Parish Health Ministry is planning a free screening for hearing with Dr. Adrienne Ulrich, Audiologist during Blood Pressure Screening before the Saturday 4pm mass October 12 and after the Sunday 7:30am mass October 13 2019. All are welcome.
