I n today’s Gospel, when Jesus asks “which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” the scholar of the law answered, “the one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus then said, “Go and do likewise.”

This week you can also “treat the poor with mercy” by putting a gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box.

Rest In Peace

We ask that you remember in prayers this week

John McSweeney & Diane Smith

who have recently been called home to God.

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who

have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring

with him those who have fallen asleep. - 1 Thes 4:13-14

Are you planning a Family Gathering? You are welcome to use the parish yard for your next family get together. It is your parish so you are welcome to take advantage of this space. For a family get together there would be no charge. Contact the parish office.

Becoming Catholic We welcome all people who are thinking of becoming Catholic to consider our program of preparation. We have a program that begins in September and culminates in the receipt of the Sacraments at Easter Vigil. It is called the RCIA and our approach to it is open, hospitable and meets people wherever they are in their spiritual journey. You might know someone in your family who wishes to become Catholic. Or, it might be a neighbor or someone else in the community. Please extend a friendly invitation on our behalf. Anyone interested should contact Mary Campion for more information. Reflection The Gospel today includes one of my favorite passages. Jesus tells us “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself”. Above all we are created to love God with everything we’ve got: heart, being, strength, and mind. What does that look like for you? What shape does this take in your life and in the lives of people you know? Love of God and neighbor is made manifest in so many ways. Loving God with all our hearts naturally results in loving neighbor. You cannot have the strength to love neighbor unless your heart is focused on God. One of the most significant ways we love neighbor as a parish is through the St. Vincent de Paul group. Their work is centered on spirituality and their meetings are devoted to prayer before discussing the outreach they do. You show your loving care for the poor “left by the side of the road” with your donations to the St. Vincent de Paul box, your support of the food collection for the pantries, the gifts you buy from the Giving tree at Christmas, your donations to the Rice Bowl in Lent, the hats, socks etc. You donate for the homeless and your participation in other collections we sponsor. Be sure to point out to your children and grandchildren that this is what we do because we love God and we consider neighbor to be any human worldwide. We are inspired to make St. John’s a place where love abounds in many ways. If you have an idea for a new way for us to show love of God or love of neighbor, please find time to speak to me. Have a blessed week!

Project Cookie Dough Many thanks to the bakers who made cookies this past month - they were very much appreciated! Please contact Donna O'Connor with any questions at 617-524-4396. Thank you!
