Food Pantry We know that God lives in all our neighbors. As Jesus tells us in Matthew 25:40 “You did it for me”. Through your generosity our parish is able to support the Roslindale Food Pantry and the West Roxbury Food Pantry. Many thanks for providing food for those in need. The spirit in this parish is tremendous.

Our next collection is this weekend, May 11 & 12. We hold this collection the second weekend of each month.

From the Desk of Father John Happy Mother’s Day one and all! We remember all those mothers who have gone home to God and the ones who are very much present to us here at St John’s. May God’s blessing shine you for all of your self sacrifice and care for your families. This is also Good Shepherd Sunday. What a beautiful image this is for all of us. In light of Mother’s Day, we find Jesus caring for His flock (that’s us) and nourishing us like a mother for her young. A caring Shepherd God who like scripture says, “Hears our voices” because there is a sense of familiarity to recognizing us. It is a beautiful weekend of affirmation and embracing one another. Schools are in their final exam time, teachers are getting the last lessons in for their students, and our faith formation has concluded for another year. Congratulations to Marie Sullivan and our teachers for doing a fine job with our program. Confirmation was well done. They seemed very present to Bishop Kennedy who called them to be leaders and to be vigilant and empowered in a world that needs more of a moral and ethical voice. I was very proud of this class for their attentiveness to their service projects and responsiveness to their individual interviews with Marie Sullivan and I. They will be fine leaders in our church. I am hosting a cookout for all the Confirmation class, their sponsors, parents. and siblings on May 19th at 2:00pm in the backyard of my home next door. First Communion was inspiring. To hear the little ones sing was priceless, thanks to practice and Rena leading. We have had our Mass of Anointing. This is always a wonderful event so that people have the opportunity to get this healing sacrament, which is again, another way in the Easter Season to bring life into oneself. We are reviewing the past year and see what we as a staff could do better for you and how we are meeting your needs. If there is something that you think will help this parish, within reason, of course, please let me know and we will see what we can do for the following year. Summer projects will be starting and your summer vacation plans are being talked about and that is a good time for all to rest. For those of you who go away for the summer, please consider signing up for online giving. I will be stopping “From the Desk” at the end of June just for the summer and I will resume in the fall. We are thankful for our landscaper, John Vozzella who has done an incredible job on property and I am so happy that people are noticing it. It is funny but no one knows what is behind the scenes to make this parish look good unless you volunteer and see for yourself what makes Saint Johns a special place. The kindness of all of you is one thing, but people’s involvement is so prime. We take responsibility for our parish and I am grateful for those who do.

This week we would like to acknowledge all the people who have contributed to making our year of Faith Formation so successful. We are very grateful for the support and help we received from the Parish community. Many items were collected, boxes of food were assembled for the needy, hundreds of socks were sent to those in homeless shelters and scores of gifts were donated for families who needed help at Christmas. You helped us with deliveries, with class projects, and with bake sales. You prayed with us and for us from September through May. Thank you! We are grateful to those parents who we knew we could count on, no matter what the project required. Very often the whole family came to our aide and we appreciate the service and example that you set for the children. Thank you! We are grateful for the group of volunteers who came to cook delicious meals and serve us! Event after event, a devoted team of women did whatever it took to make things run smoothly in the kitchen. Under their watchful eyes, the Confirmation students learned about serving others. And last week, the younger children and their families enjoyed a Communion brunch. We thankfully acknowledge all of the men and women in our “hospitality ministry”. Thank you! We are very grateful to the dedicated catechists who generously gave their time each week to share their faith with our children. These committed teachers spent hours planning lessons that reflected what it means to be a true follower of Jesus. We especially thank those who have worked with the children in the classes receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. Thank you! As that famous 2016 presidential candidate wrote, “It takes a village to raise a child”, and it takes many volunteers to run a meaningful, faith based program for our children. Please consider volunteering in any way you can. It truly does take us all to make St. John’s a welcoming and generous village.

Rosary during the Month of May The month of May is the month of the Blessed Mother. During the month of May, we will recite the Rosary at 8:30am, prior to the 9:00am Mass. Monday through Saturday. Praying the Rosary brings to mind the life of Christ through the eyes of His loving mother. It is a mantra encouraging a restful spirit.

T oday, we celebrate “Good Shepherd Sunday” where we reflect on the care and love of Jesus for us. Your gift to the Society of St.

Vincent de Paul will show that you are indeed the disciple of Jesus , the Good Shepherd, as it will bring your love to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.

We honor the service and pray for the continuing safety of our parishioners and family members serving our country. Please remember

in your prayers: Daniel G. Connell, U.S Marine Corps

Mark Hannon, US Army 82nd Airborne 3rd Brigade

Lt. Connor A. Houston, U.S Army, Fort Bennings, GA

LCPL Timothy Kelly, U.S. Marine Corps Liam T. Medina, U.S. Army, Republic of Korea

Captain Timothy Morris, U S Marine Corps Kelly B. Shea, U.S. Air Force, Oklahoma

Provide us with the name of any woman or man from our parish presently serving in the military. Please include service branch, and location. Send to Parish Office or email to [email protected] so we can list their names in our bulletin and keep them in our prayers.

Rest In Peace

In your prayers, please remember

Edward Gallagher, Julio A. Feliciano & Elena Gramm Alexandria Vega

Alessandro Solimine

who have recently been called home to God.

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who

have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring

with him those who have fallen asleep. - 1 Thes 4:13-14

Our God, Coffee and Conversation program is a drop in activity to discuss the Sunday Gospel of the day. We have had a wonderful response to this and our meetings have been life giving. As the summer months approach, schedules fill up so we will try meeting once a month

over the summer. Weekly meetings will resume in September. Our next meeting (the only meeting in May) will be May 19 at 10:30. Mary Bender will be facilitating this session.

Parish Health Ministry Blood Pressure Screening is this weekend, Saturday, May 11, before and after the 4:00pm Mass and on Sunday, May 12, following the 7:30am Mass.

Mother’s Day Rose Drive Massachusetts Citizens for Life will distribute silk roses after all the Masses during the Mother's Day weekend. We ask for the customary donation of $1.00 and we thank you for your generosity.

Help Massachusetts Citizens for Life create a more inclu-sive society and help us to raise funds to battle all the scourges against human life.

Scripture and the Rosary May is the month of our Blessed Mother. Two adult groups have been meeting to discuss the Scripture passages related to the Rosary. Our discussions have been very rich. Our groups are aware that so many of you who were not able to join us for this special study are faithful to the rosary and enjoy this form of prayer. We are part of a wonderful community of prayer. To give you a taste of what the author of our study book says about saying the rosary I offer you this quote. He says he wrote the book “as an invitation to imitate Mary in taking the Word of God to heart, pondering it deeply, carrying it into our own circumstances, and allowing it to set our own hearts aflame, to ultimately allowing us to be witnesses to the world of God’s merciful presence.” We will be meeting for the next few weeks with this goal in mind and we offer this thought to the whole parish as we celebrate Our Blessed Mother this month.
