Growing Oklahoma’s Aerospace Industry – Farnborough Air Show

An Oklahoma business and economic development delegation, led by the Commerce Department, worked the Farnborough aerospace trade show in England in July. Dozens of meetings were held with aerospace suppliers and prospects. Several Oklahoma firms participated in the state trade booth. Oklahoma’s aerospace and defense industry supports 150,000 jobs.

Lt. Governor Hosts Site Consultants/Business Prospects

The 30th Annual Lt. Governor’s Turkey Hunt was held throughout the state in April. Lt. Governor Todd Lamb and the communities of Woodward, Alva, Hugo, Ardmore, Duncan & Okemah served as hosts. The economic

development project is targeted to businesses and site consultants who have interest in Oklahoma as a location for new investment and jobs. Lt. Governor Lamb also hosted Small Business Day at the Capitol (April) and Young Professionals Day (October) and other statewide meetings and business projects.

BIO International Trade Show 2016

More than 60 scientists, business leaders, educators and economic development professionals represented the Oklahoma bioscience industry at the 2016 BIO International Convention in San Francisco this year. The delegation held a major reception, participated in hundreds of direct client meetings and promoted current opportunities

for growth and investment in Oklahoma under the banner of the Oklahoma Bioscience Association.

The sector produces annual revenues of more than $4.1 billion. Throughout the state, pockets of research

excellence continue to develop in Oklahoma City, Ponca City, Ardmore, Stillwater and Norman.

Expanding and Recruiting Business The Oklahoma Business Roundtable actively supports projects to promote job creation and investment – through expansion of existing industry and new business location.

Marketing, Trade Development & Business Recruitment

Targets are corporate decision makers, site location consultants and real estate executives representing diverse and “wealth creating” industries such as aerospace/defense, biotech and agribusiness, energy, information technology, financial services, and transportation/distribution.

The Commerce Department, Roundtable and statewide community partners hosted strategic business and industry presentations/networking receptions and prospect and business retention calls in dozens of cities this past year. These activities have led to new business leads and projects for Oklahoma communities.

Site Consultant Visits National corporate site selection consultants visit the state throughout the year – and are hosted by the Roundtable, Commerce team and community partners.

Mike Bennett, a global site consultant with Jones Lang LaSalle visited Tulsa and Oklahoma City in April. Bennett said the state remained a competitive location for business and that efforts to bring the site selection consultant community to the state to see available sites and communities was very important.

Other major trade/recruitment events include CFO Rising, American Wind Energy Association, Offshore Technology Show, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Conference, IAMC (Global Corp. Real Estate Execs), and Aerospace Maintenance and Overhaul trade show.

Member company, Love’s Corporation, has been named as the new signature sponsor of the event.

2016 Roundtable funding was targeted to the Paulsen scholarships and general program support. Roundtable members also assisted with judging. The $5,000 Paulsen scholarships are named for long-time Roundtable President Don Paulsen.

Roundtable President Ann Ackerman with Paulsen scholarship recipients: Amanda Curtis, University of Oklahoma; Larisa Bolin, East Central University and Roberto Gallegos Castillo, Oral Roberts University.

The Roundtable served as host for the annual Venture of the Year luncheon sponsored by the Oklahoma Venture Forum at the Governor’s Mansion. This year, Roundtable member and OVF founder Bill Cameron received the OVF Chairman’s Award for Economic Impact.

Education and Preparing WorkforceSTEM Summit Hosted by Governor

Governor Fallin joined over 300 industry and education leaders at the 3rd Annual STEM Summit in October in Oklahoma City. The summit was a business and educator forum to spotlight community and state initiatives in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Oklahoma Education & Industry Partnership (OEIP)

In July, over 100 classroom teachers from across the state participated in a unique learning session to better connect STEM education between the classroom

and business. Focused industries included energy, biotech, agribusiness and aerospace/defense. The organization provides teachers with the resources to infuse innovation and exciting instructional strategies in their classrooms.

FIRST Robotics Competition

The Roundtable supported the annual USFIRST Robotics regional competition held in March in Oklahoma City. This project helps high-school students discover career potential in engineering

and research. The regional included over 60 teams and 1,200 students and mentors with over 100 event volunteers. The students build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.  It’s as close to “real-world engineering” as a student can get.

Workforce Pipeline - Promoting Early Learning Initiatives

The Roundtable supports the work of a statewide OKCEO’s education initiative – which promotes quality early development efforts for children (birth to age 5).

Dear Business Roundtable Members & Prospective Members:

Celebrating 25 years of service, the Oklahoma Business Roundtable serves as the state’s primary economic development “support” organization – providing vital funding to assist business retention, expansion, recruitment and company start-up efforts.

The Roundtable’s economic development mission is never more important or compelling than when our economic ecosystems are rocky and state budget deficit is deep. Our singular objective is helping to advance our state’s economic development. Roundtable members deliver vital funding to assist our Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Commerce Department and our many statewide partners. This backing includes assisting trade and investment missions, marketing Oklahoma globally, hosting prospects, site location consultants and dignitaries, promoting workforce development, economic development planning efforts, and sponsoring special business development events when state appropriated monies cannot be used. We continue to make a difference. This past year, our members, who represent key industries, assisted our state’s leaders and partner communities in creating over 4,500 new jobs and over $2.4 billion in private sector investment. Oklahoma’s per capita personal income growth for the past 5 years ranks 10th in the nation. Oklahoma is vibrant and offers numerous differentiators. As business leaders, our continued investment supporting job creation and long-term economic opportunity in communities across the state builds a stronger Oklahoma. Thank you for being a key partner in the state’s comprehensive economic development effort.
