Brand Guidelines Mini-Business Plan for a COTA Design Team to build on the work we’ve done.

ROLES - This class will organize itself and behave like a mini-design and branding agency for this project.

CEO – Chief Executive Officer – this person will “run the company” which includes running the people that run the project to insure success – a happy client, happy “employees,” and a world-class creative work product. Supervises: Marketing Leads, Creative Director/Producer Teams

MARKETING LEADS – These students will lead the Research and Strategy and Tactics phases of the project, working with Dean Weast, Tony Mangle, and their consultants to define the target audience(s), the message, our strategy and tactics, our creative brief. They will also take the lead on developing a “mini-business plan” for on-going support of the COTA brand. Supervises: Researchers, Marketing Staff.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR/PRODUCER TEAMS - The creative problem solving core of every design and branding agency is the Creative Director/Producer Team. The Creative Director leads the development of creative solutions to our client’s needs – supervising writers, designers and production artists from a variety of disciplines to accomplish this. The Producer makes sure the proposed creative solutions are answering the client’s needs, can be done on time, on budget, and with the creative and production resources available to us. They act as a client proxy in the creative development stage, challenging the proposals, and supervise the production of assets in the Asset Production Phase.

Like most design and branding agencies, we will begin with 3 CD/Prod teams, working independently to develop and creative solutions to our client. Once the client has decided which team’s work they favor, the other two teams will be integrated into the lead team and tackle the design and production of specific assets.

PROCESS – The Process we will follow over the course of the semester will mirror that used in Design and Branding Agencies.

Project BackgroundCOLLEGE OF THE ARTS

Press Release:

ATLANTA—Dr. Wade Weast has been named the founding dean of Georgia State University’s College of the Arts, a new academic unit that will focus on education in arts and related media, promote creativity and respond to the changing needs of artists, on- and off-campus.

The college, which will open in July 2017, will include the School of Music, the Welch School of Art and Design, the film and theater component from the Department of Communication, the Center for Collaborative and International Arts and the Center for Educational Partnerships from the School of Music. These units are now part of the university’s College of Arts and Sciences.

“The creation of this college elevates the arts at the university and as a result arts majors will see their public performances, exhibitions and film screenings become more visible on our large and diverse campus,” Weast said. “Georgia State’s increasing number of residential students will enjoy the benefits of a more robust collection of on-campus public performances, exhibitions and film screenings. The college will partner with the university and the City of Atlanta in making downtown a more enjoyable place to live, work and study. Our college will foster a heightened focus on entrepreneurship, creativity and collaboration.”

The university’s 2011 strategic plan outlined a plan to highlight the arts and media and called for the creation of a college of the arts. The college will bring together a group of faculty and students with common research and creative interests, goals and student learning outcomes. It will respond to the rapid growth of Georgia State and Atlanta, while capitalizing on recent growth in the film and entertainment industry in Georgia.

Dr. Weast has been associate dean of music and fine arts in the College of Arts and Sciences and director of the School of Music at Georgia State since July 2015. Prior to coming to the university, Dr. Weast was dean of the School of Music at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) and director of the School of Music at the University of South Florida (USF). Weast was instrumental in developing partnerships among the arts departments at those institutions, and in the case of USF, formation of a new College of the Arts. His research and administrative interests include student-centered learning, peer learning and mentoring, and faculty development and evaluation. He has also been a successful fundraiser as evidenced by more than $3.7 million raised for scholarships at UNCSA.

“I look forward to working with Dr. Weast to ensure the successful start of the College of the Arts and to making it one of the most outstanding arts colleges on an urban university campus in the nation,” said Provost Risa Palm.

COTA’s BeginningsThe university’s strategic plan, introduced in 2011, outlined a plan to highlight the arts and media and called for the creation of a college of the arts. The college will respond to the changing and specific needs of artists today. It will promote creativity and innovative practices on campus. The college will bring together a group of faculty and students with common research and creative interests, goals and student learning outcomes. It will respond to the rapid growth of Georgia State and Atlanta, while capitalizing on recent growth in the film and entertainment industry in Georgia.

The initiation of the new College of the Arts will begin on July 1, 2016 and the transition will be made with as little interruption as possible to current and returning students in the coming academic year. The transition period will be completed by July 1, 2017 when the new College of the Arts and its faculty and students are joined together.

COTA will include: All of the School of Music and the Welch School of Art and Design. The film and theater component from the Department of Communication.

The Center for Collaborative and International Arts The Center for Educational Partnerships from the School of Music.

COTA will include about 90 faculty and 2,000 students.

During the first year of the new college, a feasibility study will be conducted on the merits of Rialto joining the college. We will examine how other urban universities are organized and use these data to make a determination.

While not presently scheduled to do so we will re-examine the issue of the Creative Media Industries Institute moving to COTA once institute is fully up and running.

COTA StudentsThe arts will be elevated at the university and as a result arts majors will see their public performances, exhibitions and film screenings become more visible on our large and diverse campus. Georgia State’s increasing number of residential students will enjoy the benefits of a more robust collection of on-campus public events. performances, exhibitions and film screenings. The college will partner with the university and the City of Atlanta in making downtown a more enjoyable place to live, work and study. The value of the degrees earned in the new college will be enhanced by a heightened focus on entrepreneurship, creativity and collaboration with a grounding in the finest, most up-to-date liberal arts scholarship.

Increased attention to fundraising will result in improvements to the overall quality of the academic programs contained in the college. The college will focus on fundraising efforts to make infrastructure improvements and increase the number of endowed professorships and endowed student scholarships. The formation of a College of the Arts will help us recruit, develop and retain a world-class faculty, which will assist in our effort to recruit and graduate the very best students. This will have a positive effect on our enrollment management targets and our graduation rate.

COTA FacultyThe hope is that faculty will notice very little difference in the day-to-day operations of the units contained in the new college. However, the heightened visibility of the arts at Georgia State will allow us to better showcase our world-class outstanding faculty. Future faculty searches will benefit from this reorganization, which rightly acknowledges the important role the arts can play in the 21st century American research university. Georgia State will become a national leader in arts and creative industries education, development and entrepreneurship.

COTA FacilitiesThe location of the Dean’s office is unknown at this time. Initially, very little relocation of academic units within the new college will take place. However, it is anticipated that future construction and renovation plans will take into account the need for the members of the college to be in proximity to each other and to be housed in facilities appropriate for the more integrated and interdisciplinary education of students.

COTA and the CommunityWe will strengthen our existing partnerships with arts organizations and media producers and forge new ones to provide students with experiential learning opportunities. We will become the “front door” to the university by offering numerous performances, exhibitions and film screenings. We will view Atlanta as our laboratory and provide students with multiple opportunities to become engaged with the local community.

AssignmentsEach project will be presented as a creative problem for you to define and then solve. Your ideas and concepts must be communicated throughout the creative process, and it is expected that the final work be presented professionally. Assignments will leverage the graphic design skills, principles and concepts you have learned up until this point, but will focus on solving the problems specifically associated with editorial design.

All illustrations and photographs must be your own original artwork, unless specified.

Attendance:Class attendance is required. Each three (3) unexcused absences will result in the lowering of the final grade by one letter grade. Failure to come to class with adequate materials for producing work will result in a recorded absence for that day. Failure to arrive on time will be recorded as half an absence, so for example, arriving late to class twice during the term will be recorded as one absence. Similarly, leaving class early will be recorded as half an absence. Roll will be taken at the beginning of each class.  Information missed due to tardiness or absence will be the responsibility of the student.  Absences may be excused due to illness, religious holidays or other extreme circumstances as defined by the University, but it is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor and to give a written excuse as required by the University.  Refer to the Undergraduate Catalog for other relevant information regarding absences.

Disruptive Student Behavior:Disruptive student behavior is student behavior in a classroom or other learning environment (to include both on and off-campus locations), which disrupts the educational process. Disruptive class* behavior for this purpose is defined by the instructor. Such behavior includes, but is not limited to, verbal or physical threats, repeated obscenities, unreasonable interference with class discussion, making/receiving personal phone calls, text messages or pages during class, excessive tardiness, leaving and entering class frequently in the absence of notice to instructor of illness or other extenuating circumstances, and persisting in disruptive personal conversations with other class members. For purposes of this policy, it may also be considered disruptive behavior for a student to exhibit threatening, intimidating, or other inappropriate behavior toward the instructor or classmates outside of class. See the following link for additional information on this policy in the Georgia State University Student Handbook: http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwdos/wordFilesEtc/disruptive.pdf

Security:Georgia State University and the Welch School of Art and Design have installed punch code locks to make our buildings safer for students and faculty. You should treat any lab or studio under card lock as a secure space. As such, GSU and the Welch School of Art and Design ask that you abide by the following guidelines to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone:

1.       Always have your GSU ID card with you when on campus.

2.       Never allow anyone to use your card. If a student or member of the staff or faculty is authorized to be in the area, their cards will give them access. If anyone asks for your card, report the incident to campus police immediately.

3.    Always report suspicious people or activity to the faculty or graduate student in charge of the studio or lab. If, for any reason, there is no faculty or graduate student supervision, report suspicious people or activity to campus police (404-413-2100)

4. Faculty at the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design are concerned about the safety of students and would like to make students aware of free and confidential services available to students who have experienced victimization, including sexual or physical assault, partner violence, stalking, or other types of

crime.   Victimassistance.gsu.edu  and an advocate is on call 24/7 at 404-413-1965

5.       Never try to enter a studio or lab by ‘piggybacking’ on someone else. For example, if someone is entering the lab or studio before you, do not try to get through the door while it is open. Wait for the door to close and then punch in the code again to gain entry. Similarly, do not allow someone else to come through with you. It can be tempting to hold the door open for someone whose hands are full with equipment, etc. This practice, however, is not secure and can put everyone at risk. Wanting to help is good, but be smart about it.

Student Health and Wellbeing:Faculty at the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design are concerned about the health and wellbeing of students and would like to make students aware of the free, confidential counseling available on a walk-in basis daily at the Counseling & Testing Center, 75 Piedmont, Suite 200.

Please see Counselingcenter.gsu.edu for more detailed information about the comprehensive multidisciplinary services provided including: counseling, nutrition, psychiatry, mind/body clinic, and a performance enhancement center.   If crisis counseling is needed after university business hours, call 404-413-1640 and follow the prompts to be connected to a crisis counselor.

Academic Honesty and Integrity:Students are expected to act according to the highest ethical standards. Any and all cheating, including plagiarism, will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic grade of “F” for the course. Refer to http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwfhb/sec409.html as well as the Faculty Affairs Handbook at http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwfhb/sec409.html and the Undergraduate Catalog for specific regulations at http://www2.gsu.edu/~catalogs/2011-2012/undergraduate/1300/1380_academic_honesty.htm

Accommodation of Disabilities:Students who wish to request accommodation for a disability may do so by registering with the Office of Disability Services. Visit http://www.gsu.edu/disability/ for more information. Students may only be accommodated upon issuance by the Office of Disability Services of a signed Accommodation Plan and are responsible for providing a copy of that plan to instructors of all classes in which accommodations are sought.

Retention of Work:The School of Art & Design has the right to retain any student project, whether it be for display, accreditation, documentation, or any other educational or legal purpose.

Student Evaluation:Your constructive assessment of this course plays an indispensable role in shaping education at Georgia State. Upon completing the course, please take time to fill out the online course evaluation.

Subject to Change:The course syllabus provides a general plan for the course. With the exception of grading and attendance policies, deviations may be necessary and written notification of any changes will be provided.

Hazardous Materials:Georgia State University is committed to providing a safe and healthful environment for its faculty, staff, students, and visitors and managing the University in an environmentally sensitive and responsible manner. There are procedures for responses and reporting of accidents, spills, etc. as defined within the Art and Design General Lab Safety Manual. Please know that by definition, most glues, spray mounts, glue removers and paints are considered hazardous materials. Their use, for example, is restricted to areas well ventilated, and
