January 2019 Newsletter

1st Tuesday of the month from September until May

I hope everyone had a great holiday. I guess I wasn’t too bad last year because Santa left me the best gift, “New Art

Supplies”. With all of the holiday activities I haven’t gotten the chance to try the new supplies and I can’t wait to get started. “Now if I could only get past that blank white sheet of paper”.

Welcome 2019!! The new year is here and time to look forward to the upcoming events.

At the January meeting, Kerry will begin the sign-up for the Carol Hallock workshop in March. In order to hold your place, you must pay at the time you sign-up. Members at the meeting will be given first preference. This is a popular workshop, so you will want to be at the meeting.

We will begin the sign-up for the 50th Anniversary and Banquet on May 7 at Ormond Plantation. The cost is $40. Attached is an invitation and menu for the event.

Remember to bring your Artist of the Month entry to the January meeting. It must be

framed, or gallery wrapped canvas and ready to hang with wire. The winners will be

displayed at the Southern Latte Café in Luling and pictures sent to the newspaper. Also, if you have anything you would like to share with the group, please bring it.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting.

Vice-President’s MessageKerry Allen

I came across this quote from the poet John Donne, “Be your own palace, or the world’s your jail.”

Artists that practice their craft are continually developing, growing and improving. This quote reminds us to do something more…that is, make the art that fulfills us, let our art be a record of what it inside of us; don’t conform to the opinions of others about what we create. Accept the freedom to make our vision a reality and build our own palaces!

Part of that growth that we seek as artists can be gained by learning from other artists, such as our guest artist this month, Peg Usner. Peg is a plein air painter, working with oils and producing beautiful landscapes, often featuring water and plants, as well as cityscapes. Peg was the Artist in Residence at Longue Vue Gardens from 2015 – 2018.

Another opportunity for growth will happen March 27th and 28th when Carol Hallock will conduct her two-day oil

painting workshop. Seating is very limited, and there is plenty of interest for this workshop. Registration will open for SCAG members at our next meeting on Jan. 8, 2019. If you would like to sign up and register, you must attend the SCAG monthly meeting on Jan. 8, and bring your check for $60 to secure your seat for Carol’s workshop. Visit Carol’s website at www.carolhallock.com to view her supply list and read about what to expect at her workshop. Registration will open to non-members on Feb. 1st.

At our Jan. 8th meeting, I will again have artwork from the last Adult Art Fair. If you attended the art fair, please pick up your artwork.

I would like to wish everyone a safe, healthy, and artistically productive New Year!

50th Anniversary Year of Celebration

Please prepare to sign up for our May 7, 2019, 50th Anniversary Celebration and Installation Banquet and pay your $40 so that we can begin a serious attendance count. In January we will be sending out information and invitations to as many former members as we can, as Ormond Plantation needs a count by March.

Still to come are possible Third Tuesday (Or another day in the Third Week) get-togethers, and work on the 50th Anniversary Primary Grade Art Contest that will be held in early May.

Hospitality

The members of the St Charles Art Guild are looking forward to another year of instruction, conversations and socializing. Please consider helping with refreshments. I will be contacting members to supply snacks for the January 8th meeting. Thanks in advance. See you at the meeting.

From member and Workshop ArtistDiane St. Germain:

Please spread the word about my website...www.dianestgermain.com...to SCAG. I love that league and would like them to know that I am planning to write more blogs and give more art advice through that and my newsletters.  If they just wish to check out my website and my blog, they do not need to subscribe to my newsletter. Also, without subscribing to my newsletter, they can read my recent archived newsletters by clicking on that link at the bottom of the newsletter page. By subscribing to my newsletter, they automatically receive my latest newsletter through their email.  My next blog which I have just begun will take one of my paintings of the waterfall through different stages of development.
