Monday May 25th:1) Our narrative story this week is called “Dr Scorpio Strikes Again (Part 1)”. First discuss

the new words (in bold) with an adult at the bottom of page 62 of your Starlight. Predict what the story might be about. Then read the text.

2) For tables practice this week I want you to try this website https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button or you can just Google ‘Hit the Button’ Select the green button ‘Number Bonds’ and then select ‘Addition within 20’. See how many you get correct in 1 minute.

3) Maths: Busy at Maths page 132. I forgot to include this in the last block of work. €2 = 200c. Use the shopkeeper’s method to work put your change or how much more you need to make €2.

4) Science: What season is it? What changes would you expect to see in Summer? Do you remember why we get the seasons? Have a look at this video if you don’t know and try the flashlight experiment - https://youtu.be/b25g4nZTHvM . Read and complete Small World p80.

5) Active Challenge: Can you spell your name by running the shape of the letters in your name? Spell your first name, rest for 15 seconds, spell your surname, rest for 15 seconds and finally spell all your name.

PS: You will need a squeezy bottle (ketchup, sauce) later in the week so hold on to any you finish in the kitchen during the week.

Tuesday May 26th:1) Re-read the text “Dr Scorpio Strikes Again (Part 1)” Starlight p62 and then complete

2) Hit the Button – Can you beat your record?

Page 2:   · Web view2020. 6. 3. · Maths: Busy at Maths p137. When subtracting we always start with the unit’s column and we take the bottom digit from the top digit.Parents, many children

3) Maths: Busy at Maths p133. Further work with money up to €2.4) Active Challenge: Can you do these yoga poses? How long can you hold the position

for? Maybe get an adult to do them with you.

Wednesday May 27th:1) Starlight p63 Activity B (at least three points on each similarity/difference) and C. 2) Hit the Button – Can you beat your record?3) Maths: Busy at Maths p134. Change from €2. I use the shopkeeper’s method to work

this out – just jump up to the next ten and then jump to the 200c and add my two jumps together. If you have your own method and it works for you then use that.

4) Science: There are lots of butterflies are around at the moment. Do you know where a butterfly comes from? Have a look at this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1S8WzwLPlM about the life cycle of the butterfly. Watch this time-lapse (speeded up video) of the stage from caterpillar to butterfly - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s19gOG-qCCA Complete Small World p81.

5) Active Challenge: Throw a ball against the wall and catch it again, hop three times on one leg and then the other leg. Rest for 15 seconds and repeat three times.

Thursday May 28th:1) Starlight p64. You should know what a noun, verb and adjective are. A ‘pronoun’ is a

word that can take the place of a noun e.g. he, they, we. 2) Hit the Button – Can you beat your record?3) Maths: Busy at Maths p135. Still on money up to €2. In Q1, if you can’t work out the

total in your head just write the sum on the page and work it out.

4) Active Challenge: Can you do these yoga poses? How long can you hold the position for? Maybe get an adult to do them with you.

Friday May 29th:1) Hit the Button – Can you beat your record?2) Busy at Maths Shadow Book p40 and 42.3) Art: You learnt about The Life Cycle of the Butterfly on Wednesday. A good way of

attracting butterflies into your garden is to have lots of flowers. Another way is to set up a Butterfly Feeder. All you need is an old squeezy bottle, cotton wool, sugar, rubber bands and paint/paper/real flowers. The procedure for making the feeder is below.

4) Can you make a small obstacle course at home and time yourself to see how long it takes? Try to involve hopping, jumping, and catching in your obstacle course. See if you can better your time over the weekend.

Monday June 1st:1) This week’s Starlight story is Part 2 of “Dr Scorpio Strikes Again”. First discuss the new

words (in bold) with an adult. Do you know what they mean? Tell a sentence with each of the words to an adult. Predict what the story might be about. Then read the text.

2) This week you are going to practice your subtraction. Open Hit the Button on the internet like last week, but this time select ‘Number Bonds’ and ‘Subtraction within 20’.

3) Maths: This week we are moving onto a very important topic called “Subtraction with renaming”. Parents, you may have learnt subtraction using “borrow and pay back”. That method works but it does not give pupils a deeper understanding of what is happening, so we no longer use that method. Have a read of the frame below.

Busy at Maths p136. Here we are practicing changing one of the tens into units. Read the explanation in the yellow frame carefully and then complete the page.

4) Lie on your back and try to get up without using your hands. If you manage this, lie on your stomach and try to get up without using your hands.

5) Put a hurley or ball on the ground and hop over and back over the hurley or ball for 30 seconds. Rest for 15 seconds and repeat three times.

Tuesday June 2nd:1) English: Re-read the text “Dr Scorpio Strikes Again (Part 2)” Starlight p66 and then

complete Activity A on page 67. Remember to write full sentences in your best writing. Use the words in the question to form your answer.

2) Hit the Button – Can you beat your record?3) Maths: Busy at Maths p137. When subtracting we always start with the unit’s column

and we take the bottom digit from the top digit. Parents, many children will do 45-9 and give an answer of 44 because they say 5 subtract 9 is 4. You need to stress to them that you take the bottom digit away from the top one. If you cannot do this (5 take away 9, I cannot do) then we need more units at the top so we just rename or change one of the top tens into units. Go through the yellow frame first with an adult. Complete p137. Parents, you can use the wording below to support your child or use this tutorial http://data.cjfallon.ie/resources/19626/activity-137/index.html

4) Science/History: Has the electricity ever gone out in your house? What did you miss about it? What did people do before electricity was invented? What would life have been like then? Write out a list of the items in your house that use electricity. Have a look at Small World p94. Colour the items that use electricity red and those that do not use electricity green – no need to write anything.

5) Active Challenge: Try the animal walks on the next page.

Wednesday June 3rd:1) Hit the Button – Can you beat your record?2) Maths: Busy at Maths p138. More practice of subtraction with renaming. 3) Active Challenge: Throw a ball (a tennis ball if you have one) against a wall and catch it.

How many can you throw and catch in 30 seconds. Rest for 30 seconds and repeat. What was your best score?

Thursday June 4th:1) Starlight p67 Activity B and C.2) Hit the Button – Can you beat your record?3) Maths: Busy at Maths p139 – A quick look back 8. Do this on your own without any help.

Send it to me to correct or if someone at home corrects it go over the ones you get wrong (if any) and ensure you understand where you went wrong.

4) Science: Electricity is a type of energy. You know that electricity comes from the socket in your wall but how is it made and how does it get to the socket? Have a look at this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf76pThNXZc. Read your Small World p95 and label the image at the bottom of the page.

5) Active Challenge: Jog the shape of a square, run the shape of a circle and hop the shape of a triangle. Rest for 15 seconds and try it again but this time switch the exercise and shapes.

Friday June 5th:1) Starlight p68 – revision of prepositions, joining words and punctuation.2) Busy at Maths Shadow Book p50 and p51.3) Active Challenge: Put a potato on a soup spoon. Try to run with it for 10 seconds, hop

for 10 seconds and run backwards for 10 seconds without letting the potato drop. Rest for 15 seconds and try it again.

4) Art: Nature is in its prime at the moment with lots of flowers and plants out. Using natural (not man-mad) materials from around your house create an artistic piece. Here are some ideas.
