Focus Question: What type of activities can we do in the summer?

Unit Summer

This week we will focus on summer activities. Remind your child what we did in different seasons. For example, in the fall we looked at different color leaves and gathered acorns, in the winter we build a snowman and, in the spring, we flew kites and saw flowers blooming, now in the summer it is hotter so what can they do? One of the best activities is going to the beach. Remind the children what they saw at the beach. Or show theme this video to help them understand. Dramatic Play Center:Going to the beach- Students will be encouraged to prepare a bag of all the items they will need to prepare their baby/ family to go to the beach. Items will be available for them to talk about and expand on the concept.

Math Center: Clothesline pattern- students will be encouraged to create and cut clothes to attach to their own personal clothesline. Can they create a pattern? How many items do they have?

Science Center:Sink vs. Float- Using items from around the room… Have student’s hypothesis if it will sink or float. Have them draw what they think will happen on a T graph. Have students experiment their findings and then check to see if they were correct.

Writing Center: Change a Letter: Choose a few simple words that have an initial sound that can be changed to create a new word, for example hat and can. On one half of an egg, write the last two letters of the word. On the

other half, write a few letters so that when rotated, new words will be created (for example cat, mat and bat). Encourage children who are interested in letters and the sounds they make to rotate the eggs to make new words.Art Center: - Beach Toys. Students can choose which item they want to create for their beach toy art activity. Such a beach ball from a paper plate. Or a sandcastle by using glue and sand or a pail and shovel. Write the word- beach.

Block Center: Camping fun- Students will be encouraged to build a camping site and take their friends on a trip. What will their tents look like? Who will they bring on their trip?

Sensory Center: Add items to a water bin and encourage students to find the items and sort by color.Literacy Center: L is for Lemonade. Have the children recall what sound does the letter Ll make? Then they will create a L is for Lemonade.

• Seashells are hard.

• They are created by animals that live in the sea. It is part of their body.

Computer Center: Alphabet Games

Writing Center: Writing folders. At home you can have your child practice tracing horizontal and vertical lines.

How are bubbles made?

Remind your child that all living things breathe. We breathe air. Bubbles are made when we blow air into a liquid such as water or milk. Also remind your child this is how fish breathe in water. When we add soap, the bubble is able to last longer and even float up in the air. Also, bubbles are round. They also pop when someone or something touches the bubble.

Such as going to the beach or park, riding our bikes, playing baseball, and going swimming in a pool. You can then discuss what is their favorite activity and why.
