Unit: Water(What happens to water when it changes temperature?)

Today we will discuss and introduce the water cycle. I will ask questions where rain comes from? How does it rain? Rain comes from clouds, the water vapor rises (evaporation) and goes into clouds, the clouds get bigger and bigger and grow making clouds (condensation) and the water falls or rains leaving the cloud (precipitation). We will sing a rain song and read about the water cycle during the daily read aloud. Students will make rain clouds using cotton and construction paper to construct a rain cloud. https://www.getepic.com/app/read/61935 5

WritingCreate or trace rain drops and have students cut them out

ArtMake a water cycle plate, draw arrows, and copy a water cycle.Ice Cube Painting: Make colored ice cubes out of water and food coloring. Insert a Popsicle stick into the water as it freezes to create a handle for children to hold while painting. When the cubes are frozen, invite children to use the colored ice paint. Before they begin painting, ask them to predict how the paints will work and what will happen as they use them.

LiteracyEncourage students to walk around your home/classroom identifying objects that make the /G/g sound.Computer/ TechnologyIce Skating Use a search engine to share a short video clip of Surya Bonaly or Val Joe "Rudy" Galindo ice-skating figures. Invite the children to share their observations and discuss. If necessary, share that people can ice skate by wearing special skates on their feet and moving their bodies across a large ice surface such as an indoor arena or a frozen body of water (e.g., pond or lake).

Sensory/ WaterABC’s: Add a few small toy letters to the water in the sensory table and invite children to explore. Call attention to how the letters look and feel in addition to the sounds that they make.MathMake a shape collage from pictures from a magazine.Outdoor playEncourage students to make bubbles: Invite children to blow bubbles with the bubble solution you created in the Cooking and Mixing Center. Talk with the children about what the bubbles do and how they look.

Unit: Water(What happens to water when it changes temperature?)

Today we will discuss and review the water cycle.Precipitation happens when water falls from the cloud in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail. We will sing the water cycle song. We will label a water cycle on a chart.

Letter of the week - G/g

WritingAlphabet Soup: Provide a pot of water and small plastic letters. Invite children to add letters and stir to create a soup. They can also create a recipe by writing down the letters they add to the pot.

ArtWaterfalls: Place pictures of waterfalls near the easel. Cover the easel with a large sheet of paper. Provide various shades of blue, grey and white paint as well as pipettes and basters. Invite children to hold a pipette full of paint at the top of the easel, point it down and gently squeeze to release the paint onto the paper. The paint will slowly flow down the paper and create a waterfall effect. Children can also explore color mixing as the paint mixes on the easel.

Literacy.Practice making the sound of the letter /u/ think of things that begin with the same sound and letter of the week /G/g

Dramatic Play/ KitchenPretend to make hot chocolate. What temperature do you need to make the water? Hot or cold?

Computer/TechnologyIslands: Search for images of aerial views of Manhattan, Long Island, Staten Island, Roosevelt Island, and other local islands. Talk with children about the relationship between water and islands as well as the islands in the New York City area.Fine motorCreate a winter/ ice habitat for animals that live in the snow using magna tiles or blocks

Sand/ Water/ SensoryFrozen Toys: Freeze various small toys in ice cubes. Place the cubes in the sensory table. Challenge children to explore how to get the toys out of the ice. Encourage them to test their hypotheses.BlocksBuild a Winter Landscape: Cut out snowflakes from white pieces

of paper and hang them from the ceiling. Add cotton balls to the blocks/Construction Center for children to add to their structures to create a winter scene.

Unit: Water-(What happens to water when it changes temperature?)

Today we will discuss what happens to water when it evaporates. Evaporation happens when liquid becomes a gas. Water changes form when water is heated or boiled. The sun helps to evaporate the water and sends water into water vapor or gas into the air. Condensation happens when a gas becomes a liquid. When the gas reaches the cloud, the cloud becomes so full and heavy and the cloud becomes bigger and releases the rain/ snow and the water cycle continues. https://www.youtube.com/watch/k9l0s5zVibo

Letter of the week - G/g

WritingUse a clipboard/ paper/ pencil/ marker to write words you find around the room.ArtLiquid Watercolors: Cover a table with paper. Provide liquid watercolor in various colors as well as small pipettes. Invite children to use the pipettes to drip water onto the paper and observe what happens when the liquid hits the paper.

LiteracyMystery box- Have students pull out pictures of objects or actual items that start with the letter of the week /G/g

Dramatic Play/ KitchenPretend to be a meteorologist and predict the weather, “The precipitation of the day is cold and snowy”.MathCount straws, add on and subtract to find the sumScienceWhich Holds More? Supply two containers, one that is tall and thin and one that is short and wide. Invite children to consider which container will hold more water. Fill the container the children think will hold more, and then pour it into the container the children think will hold less. Discuss the results.Fine MotorCreate a winter/ ice habitat for animals that live in the snow using magna tiles or blocks

Sand/ Water/ SensorySink vs. Float Experiment Invite children to consider what the words sink, and float mean. Provide an assortment of objects that sink as well as some that float and invite children to place the objects in a tub of water and observe what happens. Before testing each object, children can predict and record whether they think each one will sink or float and then compare the results to their predictions

Unit: Water-(What happens to water when it changes temperature?)

Today we will discuss what happens when water boils. When water boils and gets really hot water can be too hot to touch. After water boils. After you boil water it becomes a gas/ water vapor. We will look at a short video of a kettle and the water vapor. What is happening in the water in the kettle? The water has boiled and has now become a vapor or gas, water evaporates and the steam from the water rises, gas is formed when water is very hot. If you boil water for a long time the water from the kettle will all evaporate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2bFGpzY-Zc

Letter of the week - G/g

WritingStuck in the Rain: Invite children to draw, dictate, or write a narrative of a time they were caught in the rain or snow, and how they felt about the experience

ArtTissue paper painting- what happens when we paint on tissue paper?

LiteracyChoose a book and find letters in the book that have our weekly letter /G/g Read the word and if the child is capable have them write the letter.

Dramatic Play/ KitchenAdd doll clothes to a basket or bin and pretend to add detergent to the washer machine.

Math Create a collage using big/ little shapes

ScienceWater Cycle: Invite children to draw a sky scene (e.g., sun and clouds) on the outside of a small sealable plastic bag. Fill 1/6 of the bag with water and seal. Hang in the window. Invite the children to predict what will happen. Let the bag hang for several days and observe. The water should evaporate into vapor then change back into a liquid as it cools, forming drops inside the bag.(What does the child notice about the changes occurring inside the bag? How do they connect this experiment to changes in the weather?)

BlocksBuild a Car Wash: Invite children to build car washes out of blocks,

add car wash signs as well as small cars and invite children to pretend they are washing the cars. Discuss the role water plays in cleaning cars.

Unit: Water-(What happens to water when it changes temperature?)

Today we will discuss what happens when we freeze liquids. Water expands and becomes frozen and turns to ice. We will read a book about ice and freezing water. We will chart things made of ice- snow, igloos, snowman. https://www.getepic.com/app/read/28129

Letter of the week -G/g

WritingCopy letters from a book you've just read.ArtPaint on Ice: Make large pieces of ice by freezing a shallow layer of water in a cookie sheet. Remove the ice from the container and invite children to paint

LiteracyRead the sing along letter book, focus on the sound that each letter makes.

Dramatic Play/ KitchenDiscuss what clothes and gear you need to wear when it is raining.

MathGo on a shape hunt in your home or classroom

ScienceDoes It Dissolve? Invite children to test how well different substances (e.g., sugar, salt flour, oil, rice, etc.) dissolve in water. Provide containers, assorted substances, and water and invite children to explore. Before experimenting, ask the children to predict what will happen and record their results. Refer back to their predictions and summarize the results when they are finished working.

BlocksBuild a tunnel: Supply empty, clean cardboard tubes such as paper towels, toilet paper, and wrapping paper tubes. Invite children to pretend the tubes are tunnels and to use them as they build. If children are interested, talk about how tunnels can help people navigate bodies of water.

Sand/ WaterWater Play: Throughout the unit, vary the items in the water table. Observe how the children are using the materials to ensure that there are enough materials to keep children engaged without overwhelming their play. Consider a combination of funnels, colanders, buckets, plastic containers, pipettes, various sponges, ladles, whisks, basters, and pumps from hand soap containers.
