Bulletin board paper

Procedures:
Start the lesson by introducing the country of China to the students on a globe or large
wall map. Discuss what they found interesting in the passage about China.
Ask students to read the passage “Ancient China Travel Journal Part 1.”
Following reading, students will construct their table top map with a small group, 3-4
students. They will glue their map down to the bulletin board paper.
Ask students to cut out and glue down each of the “Images from the Road” along the
sides of the map. They will be responsible for using the passage to cue them as to where
each of the images should be linked to on the map.
Using yarn, students will tape one end to the city or area it referenced in the passage to
where they have the image glued along the sides.
As an exit ticket, ask students, “After examining the map and discussing the passage,
write a short paragraph describing something interesting you learned about China’s
culture or geography. Be sure to tell why it interested you.”
Evaluation:
Students will write a paragraph answering the question, “After examining the map and discussing
the passage, write a short paragraph describing something interesting you learned about China’s
culture or geography. Be sure to tell why it interested you.”
