Edible Compost Cakes!
Now that you’ve made your own compost I know you’re thinking yum that looks delicious! I hope not really!
But we can make some fake compost cakes that are really delicious and really do look like compost!
Just like our real compost we layer our cake with wet ingredients (greens) and dry ingredients (browns) and we will have some fake mini beasts in it, just like our real compost!This recipe makes about four ordinary tumbler glasses worth of compost cakes and loose compost for the decoration. If you have too much left you can make it into cake pops!
Pre-set oven to 175 c, grease a cake tin or line with greaseproof paper. It takes about 15-20 minutes to prep, 40-45 mins to cook.
You will need:Browns (dry material,
main cake)Greens (wet material, chocolate ganache)

granulated sugar Dark chocolate 200gCheck any words written in red in the Eco glossary in module one to find out what it means!

You can make this a vegan recipe;
Just swap;
-1 large egg for 2 tablespoon water, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 2 teaspoons baking powder. Mix these together first and leave to stop fizzing otherwise you’ll have fizzy cake!
- Milk for any other milk, oat, rice, soy, coconut, your choice!
- Double cream for coconut cream (any leftovers can be used for nice cream!)
- Get vegan friendly jelly worms or make them out of chocolate by melting white or dark chocolate, dripping onto greaseproof with a spoon and leaving to set.
You do not have to add coffee, but you cannot taste it when the cake is cooked it
Mix Flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder
and salt together,

While it is cooking make the ganache. Heat cream either
in microwave or over a double boiler on the stove.
Mix in chocolate pieces until melted and smooth. Put in fridge for up to an hour.
Put greaseproof paper in a glass or tupperwear
tub (you choice of which shape, how big etc, you
can make small individual ones or bigger
ones to share!)
Put cake in a bowl and crumble with forks,
until it looks like soil.

Put plate on top, tip over and carefully remove cake from glass, take the baking paper
off.
Layer cake with ‘dry’ and ‘wet’ mixtures.
Just like real composting put a layer of dry material
at the bottom. Press it down. Layer ganache on top of the cake and keep going in this pattern until you reach the top. Press the dry cake down each
time.
Decorate and enjoy!!Put left over crumbs around edge of cake and put worms
over you ‘compost’

If you do have some left over, you can make cake pops!Mix the leftover ganache and cake together, roll into
balls. Freeze to harden and save for another day, take out of freezer 30 mins - 1 hr before eating, dip in melted
chocolate! To put on sticks melt a block or two of chocolate, dip a
cocktail stick into it and stick into the cake ball, the chocolate keeps it from slipping off. Freeze to harden and dip into melted chocolate when you are ready to
eat them.
