Year 1 weekly learning tasks

Well done everybody, you’ve been working so hard. We all understand that it can be difficult having to work from home as it doesn’t feel the same as being at school as there’s lots of distractions around you. You’re all doing a fantastic job though, keep it up!

English

Task 1: We would like you to find your favourite toy from your house and draw a picture of it. Once you have done this you need to write a paragraph describing it. You’ll need to use plenty of adjectives (describing words). Next, try to write another paragraph about your toy going on a quick trip around London. To do this you’ll need to try to use verbs (doing words) and adverbs (describing the verb).

Task 2: Learn each of these spellings and use them in a sentence.

See how many of the words you can use in one sentence, ensuring that it still makes sense.

Task 3: Write a diary entry about your day. Even if you haven’t done very much you can still do this. You could write about what you had for breakfast and go into details about where you were sitting to eat. Think about all of the little things that you’ve done with your day and record them in your diary. What can you see out of the window? What is the weather like? What have you eaten? What work have you done?Who have you talked to and played with?

You could make a small booklet and begin making an entry in your diary everyday, it will be great fun to read back when you’re older.

9. I have lots of sweets, dont you?10. Id rather have chips.

Task 5: Explain how to make a meal. Ask your parents to show you how they make your dinner and write down the steps. Remember, when writing instructions you need to use time adverbials such as ‘first, secondly, next, after that, then, finally’. Try to write as much detail as possible to really explain how to make the food. If the instructions are good enough, ask your parents to try and follow them next time they cook that same dish.

Maths

Task 1: Try to fill in as many times tables as you can. Begin with 2,5 and 10s and then see how many others you can do. Remember 2 x 7 is exactly the same as 7 x 2 so you should

Science

For science this week we would like you to explore different materials around your house. You’ll need to find different objects that are made out of different materials. Try to find some different examples of wood, plastic, metal, fabric and glass.Once you’ve found the objects, draw a scientific diagram of them and label the material they are made from. You could even explain why you think they are made of certain materials, or why they shouldn’t be made from another material. For instance, a frying pan is made from metal so it can get really hot. It wouldn’t work if it was made from plastic because it would melt.

History

For history this week, we would like you to continue your learning surrounding the ‘Great fire of London’. At the time of the fire, houses in London were very different from today. They were made from wood, with thatched roofs, and were often very close together. Even touching at the top above the streets! Because of this, the fire was able to spread very quickly and soon great areas of London were ablaze. We would like you to create a model of a street during the time of the great fire. Below, you will find a picture of what the houses would look like and a net to help make your first house. You can copy the net onto paper or cardboard (a cereal packet would be perfect) and make as many houses as you want before colouring them in.

PSHE

For PSHE this week we would like you to make an information leaflet or poster explaining how you have stayed safe over the past few weeks. What are some of the main things that we have to do now

whenever we leave the house or go outside?Your information should include advice about washing hands, keeping our distance from people we don’t live with, wearing a mask on trains and busses and staying at home as much as possible. You could also include advice on how to stay occupied at home, what are your top tips for not getting bored?

Music

What is your favourite song? Spend some time listening to it and trying to learn the words. You don’t have to learn the whole song, just one or two verses would be amazing! When

you are ready, if you’re feeling brave, put on a mini concert for your household. To help with this, you could make a microphone out of rolled up paper.

P.E.

How many star jumps can you do in one minute?

Jog on the spot for 2 minutes.

Hold your arms out to the side and draw small circles with your fingertips, keep going until you have to stop.

Lie on your back with your feet in the air. Pretend that you are riding a bike with your feet and legs.

How long can you hold a tin of beans out in front of you with straight arms?

Practise throwing and catching a ball, how many times can you do it before someone drops the ball?

Art

Can you make a tree? What materials would you need? How big could it be? Your task is to try and make a model or sculpture of a tree. To do this, you can choose your own materials; wood, paper, playdoh, clay, sticks, lego… It is up to you. Your tree could have real leaves stuck to it, or it could be a winter tree. It can be big, or small. The choice is yours!
