Two-Tone Poetry
Example 1
Part of me is brilliant yellow—
lively and vivacious
bouncy and buoyant,
teasing my friends and enjoying the spotlight.
But deep inside there’s another part,
pale purple, like a violet hiding under a leaf—
shy and self-conscious,
fearful and cowardly,
shaking with stage fright when the telephone rings.
Yet they’re both very real,
and they’re both me!
Example 2
Some days I’m firecracker red—
full of energy and smart remarks,
like a wild bull, ready to attack the world!
Other days I’m a faded grey—
rumpled and crumpled and careless and useless,
soggy and sleepy and all worn-out.
But watch out, folks,
‘cause today I’m red!
Your Turn!
1. Use either format to speak of your “two tones” (sides to your personality or different moods). Write your thoughts in poetic lines, as in the examples. Include some comparisons and use strong adjectives. Try to make up an original name for your color—elephant grey, sunset pink, pickle green, etc.
2. Reread what you’ve written. What might you add, omit, substitute, move? REVISE! Check your spelling and punctuation. EDIT!
3. Finally, take two or more pieces of colored paper that illustrate your tones, and cut them into any shapes you wish. Attach them to your two-tone poem in a way that adds to the presentation.
