I. Demographic Description of Library Community, School, and Students
A. Detailed description of the school’s local community
Mt. Pleasant Elementary School is located in beautiful historic Mt. Pleasant, NC, a 100%
rural community in eastern Cabarrus County. The elementary, middle, and high school are all
named after the town of Mt. Pleasant, have the same school colors of blue and gold, and the
same mascot, “Roaring Tiger.” The people of the community have lived here for generations.
Most of my colleagues have lived in this town all their lives and are former students of this
elementary school and attended the middle school and high school in this community.
According to the United Census Bureau, the population of Mt. Pleasant, NC is 6,622.
About 95% of the population is White, 4% is black and the rest is Native American, Asian or
Other. Clearly, Mt. Pleasant, NC is not a very diverse community. This mostly White population
speaks English only in the home (98.2%) with the remaining speaking either Spanish or an
Asian language. The 2011-2015 American Community Survey 5 Year Estimates indicate the
community’s poverty level is 10.8%. The population that is 16 years and over is 4179 and 67%
of that population is in the workforce. Over a quarter of the occupations are in Management,
Professional occupations (28.3%) followed by Sales and Office Occupations (25.7%.)
Production, transportation and material moving occupations are behind that at 19.1%. Private
salary and wage workers make up the majority of the workforce in Mt. Pleasant. (77.1%.)

B. Detailed description of the school, staff, and students
Mt. Pleasant Elementary School is a traditional public school and is part of Cabarrus
County Schools. Mt. Pleasant Elementary School serves 670 students from kindergarten
through 5th grade and has an Average Daily Membership of 671. Our school population is
92.4% white, 3.2% Hispanic, 1.8% Black, 1.9% Multi Racial, .4% American Indian, .3% Asian.
Of our school population, 37.59% qualify for free/reduced lunch. Nineteen percent of our
students are identified as Exceptional Children, 8.2% as Academically and Intelligently Gifted
and 1.5% are English Language Learners. The school library should reflect this population with
a wide range of materials of various reading levels.
Of note is 2015-2016 was the fourth year that Mt Pleasant Elementary School
EXCEEDED EXPECTED GROWTH. This means, since August of 2012, our staff has helped
our students grow at a rate well over what is expected. There is no other elementary school in
our county who exceeded growth the last two years, let alone the last four. (Email
correspondence Corey Cochran.)
Mt. Pleasant Elementary School consists of 67 staff with 42 certified teachers. Six of the
staff are male: Principal, Technology Facilitator, Physical Education Teacher, Art Teacher and
two Custodians. Only two staff members are nonwhite. The School Library Media program
should reflect the population, but also contain some diversity.

Principal Corey Cochran is the head of our school, assisted by Assistant Principal of
Instruction, Deborah Burris. Also working in the front office is our Data Manager, Treasurer, and
Clerical Staff consisting of a full time receptionist and a Teacher Assistant who works in the front
office part time, and does interventions with students the other time. We have a custodial staff
of 3: 2 males (1 of the 2 nonwhite staff members) and 1 female. We have 1.2 AIG teachers.
One is employed at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School full time and another works one day at Mt.
Pleasant Elementary School and the other 4 days at another elementary school. We have a
School Psychologist (.66 position) and is based here but is shared among other schools. We
have a full time nurse employed by Cabarrus Health Alliance. Our School Resource Officer is
employed by Cabarrus County Government. Two School Counselors (1.5 positions) regularly
teach Guidance Lessons opposite my Media Lessons. One counselor splits her time between
Mt. Pleasant Elementary School and Bethel Elementary School. There is one ESL teacher (the
other nonwhite staff member) who spends an hour or so with our students each week. There
are 2 full time Exceptional Children teachers and an EC Lead Teacher who serves in an
advisory role and does not interact directly with children. Our school has five assistants that
work with all four kindergarten classrooms and the 3 combination classes: 1st/2nd, 2nd/3rd, and
3rd/4th. There is a Technology Facilitator. The School Librarian and the TF have a great working
relationship and collaborate on lessons.

C. Statements of the school’s mission and the school library’s mission
The overarching county mission is:We will value, teach and empower each student in a culture of educational excellence.
The mission of Mt. Pleasant Elementary School is to develop respectful and responsible life-long learners with the partnership of parents and community. Cabarrus County Schools website
There is no school library mission as of this writing.
D. Description of the school library staff, program, and services ( i.e. type of schedule, hours, program focus, etc.).
One person works in the library: ME! I am a librarian with nearly 25 years of public
library experience and a Master Degree in Library and Information Science. This is my third
school year in a school library. I am assigned a mentor in another elementary school in our
county. Fifth grade library helpers shelve materials for me during their recess time.
I am on a fixed schedule for classes and teach 2-3 classes a day. I see students every
other week and rotate with Guidance lessons on an A week/B Week schedule. The district
recommends that librarians teach 50% of their day and manage the library the other half of their
workday. Students check out books during their class time. Students can come to the library
outside of scheduled class time. This time is referred to as Open Checkout and two students
from each class can come to the library at a time. Students must have their library card with
them in order to check out library materials. Books check out for one week and can be renewed
twice. There is no “official” overdue policy at the moment but it is on my list of things that need
to be done. I will restrict checkout if items are over 2 months overdue.
The entire school has a copy of the following “Open Checkout” schedule. I do have to
tweak it on occasion to accommodate meetings/staff development/testing. I use Outlook
Calendar to keep track of the library schedule of classes and Open Checkout.

Books and eBooks are available for students to check out. Students may use 12 of the
computers in the library for research and searching for books. There is a small professional
collection for faculty but it is not well utilized. My Assistant Principal of Instruction would like me
to expand this collection. It is on my list of goals. DVDs are housed in the media office and
there is a standard form and official policy regarding showing DVDs and other media in the
classroom.
II. Collection
The library collection at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School has 10,742 items. The average
copyright date is 1998. According to IMPACT guidelines, Mt. Pleasant Elementary School’s
overall library collection is considered MINIMUM at 14.9 items per student.
Sixty percent of the library collection is classified as nonfiction with an average copyright
date of 2000 and 40% is classified as fiction with an average copyright date of 1997. IMPACT
guidelines indicate collection copyright date is BELOW AVERAGE, although nonfiction by itself
would meet MINIMUM guidelines. Most (99%) of the library collection is print. There is a
professional collection for teachers, DVDs and videocassettes. Also available are eBooks. The
graphic novel collection is developing and needs to be expanded. The collection used to be
splintered into sections such as Caldecott, Newbery, Coretta Scott King, and North Carolina.
Users found that to be confusing and now there are no special sections. Not included in the
Titlewave analysis are magazines that are available in the lounging areas of the library. These
items are not catalogued and are culled when they are ripped or in poor condition.
Online resources and databases are also outside of the Titlewise analysis. These
resources include Culture Grams, Discovery Education, NC Wise Owl, and True Flix. These
resources are available 24/7 anywhere there is an Internet connection. Cabarrus County
Schools pays for these subscriptions at the district level in order to take advantage of a bulk
discount.
Supplementing the school library collection is the public library. The citizens of Mt.
Pleasant rallied and fundraised for their own library branch that now functions as part of
Cabarrus County Public Library. The fundraising was a pure grassroots effort within the
community. The school librarian is the former manager of the public library branch and still
remains very involved with the public library. In the community is a local history museum which
is very active and has tremendous information and resources about the local community.
A. Age of the Collection
Mt Pleasant Elementary School’s collection is signified “BELOW” with an average
collection age of 18 years according to the IMPACT study. However, the nonfiction collection
has an average age of 16 years which aligns with the MINIMUM guidelines of the IMPACT
study. Only 9% of the collection has a copyright date of 2011 or newer. Delving deeper into
selected Dewey Decimal Classification we see that most of the older items in the collection are
religion, language, customs, etiquette and folklore.

The area of the collection that would satisfy the standard in Figure 6 is the Biography
Section. Additionally, the entire third grade participates in a “Living Museum” project. Students
dress up as their chosen person and deliver speeches. The Biography collections holds over
500 items for 113 third students. That appears to be adequate. However, the section has an
average reading level of 4.9 and an average copyright date of 2000.
When comparing the collection to a standard bibliography such as the Wilson Core
Collection, Mt. Pleasant Elementary School is lacking as demonstrated in Figure 7. A simple
search of two popular biography topics: Florence Nightingale and Abraham Lincoln was
conducted using the Mt. Pleasant Elementary School library catalog. Results were then
compared to the Wilson Core Collection. Findings indicate only one book about Florence
Nightingale matched the Wilson Core Collection. Two Highly Recommended titles and one
Core Collection title about Abraham Lincoln matched the collection at Mt. Pleasant Elementary
School. There are no Spanish language biographies for Spanish speaking students. The
section needs weeding and updating to meet the average reading level and average copyright
date to IMPACT guideline standards and to align with the Wilson Core Collection. Further, there
are no books for English Language Learning students to complete this project.

Fourth grade researches Animals in the spring. The Dewey Decimal Classification 590
would satisfy the standard in Figure 8. There are 507 books for 117 fourth graders in the
Botany section. The average reading level is 4.6 which is on par for 4th grade. The average
copyright is 2003 which is in line with IMPACT standards. There are items in the Spanish
collection that are 590 and would satisfy this standard for English Language Learners.
A simple comparison was made to the Wilson Core Collection. The term “Penguins”
was searched and ten books were found in the Mt. Pleasant Elementary School library catalog.
None of these titles were found in the Wilson Core Catalog. This seems to indicate the 590
collection needs some serious overhauling. Serious weeding and updating needs to occur to
make the collection relevant and useful to student learning and success.
C. Selected Divisions
A small portion of the school library collection was analyzed by physically examining
materials in the Everybody Neighborhood, 300s, 500s, and 900s. Eighty books were randomly
sampled and evaluated by looking at physical condition, circulation statistics and copyright date.
A score from 1-3 was given for the physical condition of the books:
1-- Perfect2--Slightly Scuffed3--Terrible
This information was then recorded in a spreadsheet. Next, the collection was analyzed by

The 80 book sample of the collection was illuminating. Judging by physical appearance,
most books should remain on the shelves. However, upon further review of copyright date and
number of circulations, many of these books should be pulled from the shelves.
In the E Picture Book Division, many of the books sampled are in nearly perfect shape.
The books that are in poor shape should be weeded. Many of the books that are dated such as
Chick and Duckling by Ginsburg and I Went Walking by Williams should be weeded from the
collection and replaced with more relevant and age appropriate titles. The “MUSTY” and
“CREW” method of deselecting library materials should guide this process as indicated in
“Crying Over Spilled Milk” by Gail Dickinson. The Wilson Core Collection for children should be
consulted.
In the 300 Dewey Classification, most of the items sampled must be weeded and
updated because they are over ten years old. The only exception are the customs, etiquette,
and folklore books. These items should be weeded and replaced when they are in poor
condition. The same can be said for the entire collection of all of the books classified in the
300s section, not just the sampled collection.
Most of the items in the 500s section sampled should be discarded. All but two of the
books fall within the recommended publishing date according to IMPACT standards. Looking at
the entire section, most of these items must be weeded and updated to include newer items.
The 900s section is woefully lacking, both the sample and the section as a whole. At
4%, it is far below the IMPACT recommended 20.5-24.8% of the collection. The copyright dates
below 1999 must be discarded as recommended by IMPACT. Also biographies that are more
narrative should be moved to another part of the collection. The collection must be carefully
examined to ensure that stereotypical information of Native Americans and other ethnic groups
are not present in library materials.
Overall, the library collection at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School needs weeding and
updating. The attached section will illustrate the updates needed to ensure student
success and learning.
