MEETING RECAP

DECEMBER CHAPTER MEETING RECAP

The “Annual Holiday Celebration” was a rousing good time!

The fifty members in attendance found “The Afternoon Delight” absolutely delightful. They did a spoof of the song “Ain’t she Sweet” using Flo Innes as the straight man while singing “Sweet She Ain’t”.

There was plenty of food and Flo made a “special” egg nog punch.

Also, Chapter Secretary Joan Haber talked about how Rocky Stone stated that holiday gatherings can be improved significantly by a strong family support structure rather than a battleground to be avoided at all costs. Rocky related a story in his book about how the “consistent centerpiece of these gatherings is the effort everyone makes to facilitate my understanding of the conversation”. Rocky considered this type of family communication to be the ultimate Act of Love.

HLAA FOUNDER’S BOOK -- THE “INVISIBLE CONDITION”

Join us in a yearlong celebration of Rocky Stone, HLAA’s Founder.

To celebrate Rocky and the 35th birthday of the Hearing Loss Association of America, our Chapter will be remembering Rocky and getting to know his legacy.

In the 1981 May/June issue of the HLAA magazine, he wrote:

“Hard of Hearing people are beginning to dream of many changes which will improve our lives. We should. But no one is going to do it for us. It is time to get our shoulders to the wheel.”Rocky Stone

For more on the founder, see http://www.hearingloss.org/about-us/founderIn his book, “An Invisible Condition, The Human Side of Hearing Loss”, Rocky wrote: “the most pervasive physical handicap in America today is an invisible condition – hearing loss”.

MEDICAL NEWS –NEW STUDIES ON RESTORING INNER EAR HAIR CELLS

“Michigan Today” has reported on research where scientists have restored the hearing of mice partially deafened by noise. They used advanced tools to boost the production of a key protein in their ears. They reported in November that “By demonstrating the importance of the protein, called NT3, in maintaining communication between the ears and brain, these new findings pave the way for research in humans that could improve treatment of hearing loss caused by noise exposure and normal aging...

That’s music to the ears of anyone who has experienced problems making out the voice of the person next to them in a crowded room, or struggled with temporary reduction in hearing after a loud concert”.

Dr. Gabriel Corfas who led the research team at the University of Michigan’s “Kresge Hearing Research Center” said that this has been an ongoing project for 15 years. The research attempts to answer the questions “about the inner ear, and now we have been able to restore hearing after partial deafening with noise, a common problem for people”.

Michigan Today stated that “Their work also illustrates the key role of cells that have traditionally been seen as the ‘supporting actors’ of the ear-brain connection. Called supporting cells, they form a physical base for the hearing system’s ‘stars’: the hair cells in the ear that interact directly with the nerves that carry sound signals to the brain. This new research identifies the critical role of these supporting cells along with the NT3 molecules they produce.

NT3 is crucial to the body’s ability to form and maintain connections between hair cells and nerve cells, the researchers demonstrate. This special type of connection, called a ribbon synapse, allows extra-rapid communication of signals that travel back and forth across tiny gaps between the two types of cells”.

The research study can be found at:

Chapter’s Vice President’s Monthly Column in The Venice Gondolier[Anne Taylor is a bilateral cochlear implant user, a Gallaudet Certified Peer Mentor for the Hard of Hearing. She is Vice President of the local Hearing Loss of America and writes a monthly column. Here is last month’s column].

Are you a Veteran affected by Hearing Loss?

War is Noisy

Did you know that there are approximately 88,000 Veterans in Sarasota/Manatee counties; 17,600 with hearing loss and/or tinnitus (ringing in the ears)?Out of all the injuries, many veterans say that hearing loss is the most challenging to manage. Hearing loss is invisible and it affects the individual, family, friends and colleagues.Mark Brogan, a retired army captain, suffered a brain injury, a spinal injury and a nearly severed right arm when a suicide bomber on foot detonated his weapon near Brogan in Iraq. What does Brogan find the most traumatic of his injuries? He says, ‘hearing loss and constant ringing of the ears’.Often overshadowed by other challenges a Veteran’s hearing loss is frequently intertwined – physically and emotionally – as a trigger, every day frustration or a constant reminder of what has been sacrificed while serving our country. It is a unique, and often solitary, personal challenge for many Veterans. (www.heroeswithhearingloss.org)

War is Expensive

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the most prevalent service-connected disabilities for veterans receiving federal compensation in 2011 were tinnitus and hearing loss, followed by PTSD. The number of veterans with tinnitus climbed by 92,300 in 2010. 745,000 are now being compensated for tinnitus, the most prevalent of service-connected disabilities, followed by hearing loss and other auditory complications.Hearing maladies cost more than $1.4 billion in Veterans disability payments annually (2010 data from the Hearing Center of Excellence – a part of the Department of Defense). At least $216 million was spent that same year for hearing aids and related devices, according to an advisory committee report to the VA. The VA buys one in five hearing aids sold annually in the U.S., according to that 2010 spending report – the last year that data was available.

The Private Eyes Movie Club meets on Third Tuesdays.

This month, the Club will “meet” on Tuesday, January 20 around 4:30 PM at the Hollywood 20 on Main St. in Sarasota. A roundtable review--and other conversation-- follows at a restaurant within short walking distance of the theatre.

The exact time and movie will be announced to Private Eyes Members (membership is free—signup with link below) by e-mail and on Facebook.

Remember to ask for “caption glasses” or caption devices at any movie theatre and thank them for the accommodation. Sony describes the lasses as follows: “The glasses may be comfortably worn over prescription eyewear. The closed-caption viewing uses unique Sony holographic technology, which delivers bright, clear, and easy-to-read subtitles seemingly ‘in the air.’ The system transmits closed-caption data from a media server wirelessly to the glasses' receiver box, and can be programmed to display subtitles in a choice of six languages.

“Private Eyes” free membership is limited to HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee member. First time “Private Eye” members are entitled to a free movie ticket at their first movie. To receive the notice of the movie selected, which goes out the weekend before the movie date, contact Anne Taylor at [email protected]

The Players Theatre at 838 N. Tamiami Trail, in its 85th season, provides the Chapter with 20 tickets for the preopening of its 2014-2015 productions. The shows are, of course, looped!

The Chapter filled its allocation for “A Christmas Story” on December 2 very quickly and what a fun show it was.

The next production is Cabaret and our tickets will be for January 6.

This classic and moving Kander and Ebb musical is set in the midst of the Nazi takeover of 1931 Berlin. Glitzy, moving, and surreal, this musical revolves around cabaret performer Sally Bowles as she battles her onstage stardom and her offstage loves. Songs include “Cabaret,” “Maybe This Time,” and “Money.”

If you wish to attend “Cabaret”, please leave your e-mail with Committee Chair Betsy Roberts at [email protected] as tickets are allocated on first response basis.

If you use the box office in person, thank them for the loop. If you attend a performance, thank them for the loop.

The Chapter’s “Between the Covers Book Club” meets twice a year, Spring and Fall. The next book for the Spring meeting will be announced soon but you can start reading now. The selection is an Amazon 4.5 star book entitled Listen with the Heart - Relationships and Hearing Loss by Michael A. Harvey (4 1/2 stars).

Dr. Harvey has addressed HLAA in the past and the book is summarized by Amazon as follows: “ While distressing for an individual, hearing loss also takes a heavy toll on family and friends. These stories chronicle the unique challenges of hearing loss in interpersonal relationships, including communication, self-identity, and how to continue sharing and growing in these relationships. Many shared activities, such as enjoying music, whispering sweet nothings to a lover, and hearing children's voices are deeply missed by both the hearing and hearing-impaired relationship partners. This book illustrates the power of relationships to transform people and how each party has unparalleled opportunities to grow in profound and unpredictable ways”

This is a good read for members whether you are able to attend the Book Club meeting or not.

OUTREACH - FARMERS MARKET

Outreach -- Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market

Outreach Events Keep the Chapter Busy

The Chapter’s outreach program covers over 100 events a year. Please contact Dave Donnelly to “pay it forward” by attending events with our table and materials and informally offering education, advocacy and support to members of our community. With the assistance of Mark Selis, the Chapter has scheduled 10 outreach events in both January and February. We need some help from 9:00 AM to Noon on many of those days. “On the job” training is available at any Farmers Market day or special event. Let Dave Donnelly know if you can help HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee by contacting [email protected] .

Farmers Market -- Saturday, January 24- - 7 AM to 1 PM

Our monthly information and support booth at the Sarasota Farmer’s Marker offers an opportunity for people to learn how to address their hearing loss.

The Chapter has a permanently assigned site, 1920 State Street between Lemon and Pineapple.

There will be free hearing screening each month by one of HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee’s Pro Partners. If you have a friend who needs hearing help and cannot make one of our meetings, please suggest they visit us here.
