Morning Prayer

for the Seventh Sunday of Easter

May, 24 2020

Emmanuel Episcopal Parish

of Orcas Island

Opening Sentence

On this day the Lord has acted; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Amen.

Invitatory and Psalter

℣O God, let our mouth proclaim your praise.℟And your glory all the day long.

Praise to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia

Christ our Passover

Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us; therefore let us keep the feast,

Not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Alleluia.

Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.

The death that he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

So also consider yourselves dead to sin, and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Alleluia.

Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

For since by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.

For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. Alleluia.

Psalm 66 Jubilate Deo

1 Be joyful in God, all you lands; *

sing the glory of God’s Name;

sing the glory of God’s praise.

2 Say to God, "How awesome are your deeds! *

because of your great strength your enemies cringe before you.

3 All the earth bows down before you, *

sings to you, sings out your Name."

4 Come now and see the works of God, *

how wonderful God is in their doing toward all people.

5 God turned the sea into dry land,

so that they went through the water on foot, *

and there we rejoiced in God.

6 In God’s might God rules for ever;

God’s eyes keep watch over the nations; *

let no rebel rise up against God.

7 Bless our God, you peoples; *

make the voice of God’s praise to be heard;

8 Who holds our souls in life, *

and will not allow our feet to slip.

9 For you, O God, have proved us; *

you have tried us just as silver is tried.

10 You brought us into the snare; *

you laid heavy burdens upon our backs.

11 You let enemies ride over our heads;

we went through fire and water; *

but you brought us out into a place of refreshment.

12 I will enter your house with burnt-offerings

and will pay you my vows, *

which I promised with my lips

and spoke with my mouth when I was in trouble.

13 I will offer you sacrifices of fat beasts

with the smoke of rams; *

I will give you oxen and goats.

14 Come and listen, all you who fear God, *

and I will tell you what God has done for me.

15 I called out to God with my mouth, *

and God’s praise was on my tongue.

16 If I had found evil in my heart, *

the Sovereign One would not have heard me;

17 But in truth God has heard me; *

God has attended to the voice of my prayer.

18 Blessed be God, who has not rejected my prayer, *

nor withheld divine love from me.

Psalm 67 Deus misereatur

1 May God be merciful to us and bless us, *

show us the light of their countenance and come to us.

2 Let your ways be known upon earth, *

your saving health among all nations.

3 Let the peoples praise you, O God; *

let all the peoples praise you.

4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, *

for you judge the peoples with equity

and guide all the nations upon earth.

5 Let the peoples praise you, O God; *

let all the peoples praise you.

6 The earth has brought forth her increase; *

may God, our own God, give us their blessing.

7 May God give us their blessing, *

and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe of God.

Praise to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The First Reading

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 1:6-14

When the apostles had come together, they asked Jesus, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

People Thanks be to God.

Canticle: A Song of Wisdom

Sapientia liberavitWisdom 10:15-19,20b-21

Wisdom freed from a nation of oppressors * a holy people and a blameless race.

She entered the soul of a servant of the Lord, * withstood dread rulers with wonders and signs.

To the saints she gave the reward of their labors, * and led them by a marvelous way;

She was their shelter by day * and a blaze of stars by night.

She brought them across the Red Sea, * she led them through mighty waters;

But their enemies she swallowed in the waves * and spewed them out from the depths of the abyss.

And then, Lord, the righteous sang hymns to your Name, * and praised with one voice your protecting hand;

For Wisdom opened the mouths of the mute, *and gave speech to the tongues of a new-born people.

Lectio Divina

“Lectio Divina, literally meaning "divine reading," is an ancient practice of praying the Scriptures. During Lectio Divina, the practitioner listens to the text of the Bible with the "ear of the heart," as if he or she is in conversation with God, and God is suggesting the topics for discussion.”

“Like Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina cultivates contemplative prayer. Unlike Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina is a participatory, active practice that uses thoughts, images and insights to enter into a conversation with God.”

Guidelines

1. Reading (Lectio): Read a Scripture passage slowly, listening with the “ear of your heart.” What word or phrase captures your attention? Repeat it gently.

2. Reflecting (Meditatio): Reflect on and relish the words. Be attentive to what speaks to your heart.

3. Responding (Oratio): As listening deepens, allow responses to arise spontaneously -- praise, thanksgiving, questions, petitions.

4. Resting in (Contemplatio): Simply “be with” God’s presence as you open to deeper meanings of the Word of God for you.

The Second Reading

A reading from the Gospel of John 17:1-11

Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.

”I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.” Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.Thanks be to God.

Canticle: A Song of Faith

1 Peter 1:3-4,18-21

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, * by divine mercy we have a new birth into a living hope;

Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, * we have an inheritance that is imperishable in heaven.

The ransom that was paid to free us * was not paid in silver or gold,

But in the precious blood of Christ, * the Lamb without spot or stain.

God raised Jesus from the dead and gave him glory *so that we might have faith and hope in God.

Prayers of the People

Dearest Lord, in you we have taken refuge. Hold us, the peoples of the world, in your loving wisdom as we confront a common challenge in the corona virus. We depend on your guidance during these uncertain times.

We will not let our hearts be troubled. We believe in God.

Dearest Lord, your church is a rock, a castle to keep us safe. Help us to be your loving heart and hands in the world. For the sake of your name, help us to care for our brothers and sisters in sickness and need.

We will not let our hearts be troubled. We believe in God.

Dearest Lord, our times are in your hands. Be with the health-care providers who risk their lives to heal us. Be with the essential workers who grow and bring us food, Be with all those whose work puts them at risk of infection. We will protect them by honoring the safety measures recommended by our state government.

We will not let our hearts be troubled. We believe in God.

Dearest Lord, be with the millions who have lost jobs and health insurance, who cannot pay their mortgages or rent or utilities. Be especially with those who suffer food insecurity. Be with those whose homes are not safe. Be with prisoners during this hour of fear. Help us to find our way together, united in your love.

We will not let our hearts be troubled. We believe in God.

Dearest Lord, the earth breathes a sigh of relief as we shelter at home. When times are better, help us remember what we have learned about our true material needs. Help us to be kinder to mother earth, to value bird song and breezes like precious gold.

We will not let our hearts be troubled. We believe in God.

Dearest Lord, incline your ear as we bring our families and friends to your loving attention. Be with those who are sick and injured, with those who have recently passed and their grieving families. Be with those whose hearts and minds are troubled by doubt, despair and confusion. Be with those who are alone and fearful. Be especially with those loved ones we now name (pause), including those on our parish prayer list:

For a Birthday: O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servants Connor (Pamatian) and Betsy (Nelson) as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For an Anniversary: Grant, O God, in your compassion, that Scott & Bronwen (Jones), having taken each other in marriage, may grow in forgiveness, loyalty, and love; and come at last to the eternal joys which you have promised through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Prayer of St. John Chrysostom

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia!Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia!

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
