Section 2: Design DecisionsNature of Decisions takenThe design decisions involved in the creation of this OER were of broadly three types:
1. Content Decisions2. Pedagogic Decisions3. Technology Decisions
Content DecisionsThe content decisions related to:
a. Earmarking specific segment to be covered – Decided on Analysis and design of Reinforced Cement Concrete beams
b. The video is created for explaining the concepts and NPTEL solved problems are provided for practice purpose
Pedagogic DecisionsTypically in a flipped classroom strategy, there are two segments – Out-of-class segment and In-Class segment. The out-of-class segment requires student to refer to some given material (Video, Text etc) and form an understanding about the concepts that are relevant. In terms of concept marking the pedagogic decisions that were taken for the Out-of-class segment related to:
a. Cognitive Levels of Questions to be asked along with the resources – Mostly Recall to Apply level question for out of class and Create Level question for In-class
b. Assessment Strategies – Assignment for out of class, Team-Pair-Solo strategy for in-class
Technology DecisionsWhile developing the Out-of-Class and In-class activities, the major technology decisions taken were:
a. Tool to be used for creating screencast – screencast-o-matic, as it is free software to create the video and the each video can be created upto 15mins..
b. Providing NPTEL solved problem in the Lesson Activity for setting up Out-of-Class segment as it allowed guided self-learning. If it is necessary the teacher can use the questions for In-Class activity also by using TPS

Section 3: OER DescriptionActive OER
The OER is developed and team work of Dr.S.S.PatilDr.S.S.KashidProf.S.C.DeshmukhProf.Meenakshi.T
Lesson Settings1. The OER is developed for the topic “Analysis & Design of Reinforced
Cement Concrete Beams” under Civil Engineering Domain2. The main topic consists of 5 sub topics
a) Introduction to RCC Beamsb) Analysis of singly reinforced RCC beamc) Design of singly reinforced RCC beamd) Analysis of doubly reinforced RCC beame) Design of doubly reinforced RCC beam
3. For each topic, the teaching material has been prepared using Microsoft power point presentation(PPT)
4. Screencast-o-matic software is used to make the video of each topic using PPTa) Screencast-o-matic is a free software to make videos for
maximum of 15 mins.b) Intially the software is downloaded from internet and installed in
local computerc) Then we double click on the screencast-o-matic icon, there
options will be displayed, chosen “free recorder”
6
d) Then chose the screen area for the recording, in our case we put the PPT in slides format for the entire screen area
e) Make sure the narration button showing green signal, so that the microphone is connected properly
f) Start recoding your video by clicking “Rec”, in the left bottom corner
7
g) Stop Recording by clicking the stop symbol, when the lecture is completed
h) Click on done button, to synchronize the video
i) The software, will give the option to save the video in Local drive, upload to screencast-o-matic and upload to Youtube
j) It is preferred to save local drive once, and hear the video and then upload to youtube.
k) Once uploaded in the youtube, we will receive a link to share it with students
5. Once the video is uploaded in youtube, it link can be shared with students for out-of-class activity
How to use this OER1. To use this OER, ask the students to listen video one by one, in the
given sequence as out-of-class activity

2. After listening to the videos, give the students the documents which are attached below also in the below mentioned websites for in-class activity and clarify their doubts while solving the problems In attachement 1, example 3.1 (Page no 6 of pdf, can be used for the assignment or in-class activity)In attachement 2, example 3.2, 3.3 (Page no 4 of pdf, can be used for the assignment or in-class activity)In attachement 3, example 4.1 (Page no 3 of pdf, can be used for the assignment or in-class activity)

Best Practices with Lesson ActivityHere are some of the best practices from our experience on using this Lesson Activity in classroom:
1. Provide this activity at least 1 week in advance.2. Provide minor incentive (marks) for completion of the activity.3. Ensure that there is a tangible output at the end of out-of-class
activity to ensure learners are interested
9
Section 4: Evaluating Effectiveness of OER
The OER effectiveness can be assessed at two levels:
1. At the student level2. At the consumer level
Effectiveness at the student levelEffectiveness at the student level involves metrics related to student access of the resource and student learning.
1. In regular curriculum, they can watch the videos in their convenient time
2. After listening to the video, the students are encouraged to solve the problems by themselves or with a small group, it creates self motivation and more understanding the concepts of the subject
Effectiveness at consumer levelOER consumers are typically teachers who want their students to learn RCC beams. Linking a survey on three main constructs – Ease of Use, Concept Coverage and Concept Complexity, can help in identifying the effectiveness of this OER at consumer level. This has to be done as a follow-up activity.
Implementing SurveyThus every user who downloads this resource will be asked their email address and as a follow up the survey will be send to their email address.
