Greetings 4-H FamiliesThe calendar may say spring is here but as I type this and look out my office window, I see snowflakes and people with winter coats. Have faith that warmer weather will be coming soon. This month marks the 1 year anniversary for Erin and me at OSU Extension. We thank each of you for helping us along the way and pledge to continue making the best better.

A huge thanks and congratulations to our club advisors for turning in their enrollment forms on time. We had a 99% on time enrollment and because of that, all of the forms have been entered into the database. Having the forms entered makes everything else go smoother. Thank you. Clubs can still enroll new members and members can make project changes until April 30th.

Please read through the newsletter each month and share the information with your members. In this issue, we will highlight camp info, QA dates, JF updates, 4-H Kick-Off night and many other items.

4-H Kick OffThe family fun and kick off night is Friday May 8th. Bring your pennies and friends to the fairgrounds to enjoy carnival type games. Clubs may set up their area starting at 6:00pm. Doors open 7:00 – 8:30pm.

Pizza, breadsticks and pop will be available for free thanks to the generous donation from Landing Point Financial Group. Juice, water and other snacks will also be available thanks to the 4-H Advisory Council. Club advisors please call the office to let us know what kind of game or activity your club is planning. This will help to make sure that there is plenty of variety. The 4-H Green discount cards will be sold that night as well. Camp forms can be turned in.

Bring a canned good or other non-perishable to pack a pick-up truck. All items will be donated to a local food pantry in the 4-H name. Plan now to attend and get the 4-H summer season off to a great fun start.

Quality AssuranceThe dates for county wide quality assurance programs are listed on the website and on page 10 of the handbook. There were 18 volunteers who attended the training to become assistant instructors. Thank you to those that attended. These volunteers are now trained to teach the QA program for the next 3 years. First year members and a parent are strongly encouraged to attend a county date. ALL members taking a market livestock or dairy milking project must attend a QA program by June 15th. Check the website for a full list of projects that need to attend QA. Submit your attendance certificate to the office if you went to a commodity group or out of county program. Other out of county dates will be listed as we get them. Fees may apply to attend these.

Green Card

The 4-H Green discount card is back for 2015 with 3 new businesses. This year the Advisory Council is requiring clubs to buy the card up front. They are 5.00 and can be sold for 10.00. Buying the cards up front saves hassle of

returning unsold cards and keeping track of money. They are good all year and will be sold at the Kick Off and judging days. They are for sale all the time at the Extension office.

Dairy Bar Help!!!The Seneca County Farm Bureau is looking for help working shifts in the Dairy Bar during the fair this

year. We have had some trouble filling some shifts the last couple of years, and we are asking for your help! We enjoy offering this service to the 4-H members each year, however the lack of

volunteers to work is causing us to have to cut back on our hours of operation. This opportunity is available to FFA and 4-H clubs. We ask you offer your time for a shift: larger clubs can split a shift

and smaller clubs can share a shift if you would like. Please contact Donna at the Farm Bureau office as soon as possible with your availability to help.

Dairy Bar serving hours are as follows:Monday-Saturday 8:30am-5:30 pm

Sunday 8:30am-3:00pm

We ask that all morning volunteers arrive at 8:00 am to help get things started and set up for the day. Last shift volunteers are asked to help clean/shut down for the day (approximately 20-30 minutes

after doors close). The shifts will be broken up as follows:Shift 1: 8:00-11:00Shift 2: 10:45-3:00

Shift 3: 2:45-6:00 (no Sunday shift)There is a 15 minute overlap for shift changeover.

Please contact the office so we can get you on the schedule! Thanks for your help!

Pre-Fair JudgingHome Ec/FCS Misc. Ag Misc. The day will be Wednesday July 15th at Sentinel Career Center. Ag Misc. will be Saturday July 18th at the fairgrounds. The schedule will be slightly different this year as we work to get every member judged in a timely fashion. The schedule will go by club instead of members. Each club will be scheduled in time blocks with other clubs based on the number of projects in your club. This will allow us to get the schedule out sooner and club members to get judged together.

The judging sheets will be filled out by the member or parent as they register on that day. There is no longer a June 1 st deadline for entries. Members will spend a short time with the judge as they present their project(s) and during the interview. The member will have a copy of the grade sheet indicating their grade to take home with them. Jr Fair passes, green cards and poster contest forms will be available.

Members taking a sewing project who wish to participate in the Style Show during fair week can print off a style revue card from our website to have it filled out in advance. The Jane Barton contest forms will also be on the website. Extra forms for style show and Jane Barton are available at the Extension office or on the day of judging. Both forms are due at judging time.

A list of what projects will be judged on each day will be available in the next newsletter. Reminder to check the handbook for each project’s judging requirements. If your club is planning a mock judging day and need a judge, let Jason know. He would be happy to come and help.

Caption – Last year’s ag misc judging day.

Advisor JudgingIf a member cannot make pre-fair judging, then they have the choice to be judged by their advisor. Advisor judged projects are not eligible for state fair selection or county awards. All advisor judged results are due before the first day of the fair. This allows time for the results to be entered and the member to receive their premium money.
