Research for FMP.

Practitioner:

The practitioner I have chosen to research is Michael Moore, notoriously know for making documentaries such as Sicko, Fahrenheit 9/11 and Roger & Me.

Michael has won one Oscar for best documentary and a prime time Emmy for outstanding informational series, with multiple nominations and five print biographies. Michael went to Davison High School and then went on to study journalism at University of Michigan-Flint and then eventually dropped out of university to work at ‘Mother Jones’.

Competition:

My main competition is mentordigital and promoshin and twenty twenty films promo video companies that specialize in making promotional videos for companies, places or events. They have worked for Ferno & Yorkshire air ambulance and Harrogate spring water. Below is one of my competitions websites.

Target Audience

My main target audience is teenagers or adults aged 16 to 80 who are thinking about or moving to bath and wish to know more. The purpose of this is to educate the people who are interested in knowing more about bath. This is aimed at an audience with a class A or C background as Bath is high in property price and is targeted at a specific type of person.

Legal or Ethical Issues:

There are no legal or ethical issues as I’m filming in places with permission to take photos and film so there is no problem there.

Research concepts, ideas and topics:

My idea is to make a promotional video for Bath. The purpose of this is to educate people who want to learn more about the city or the tourist attractions.In the video will include facts about the city also events and special occasions that occur in bath.

The content will include shots of the roman baths and other builds observing the architecture as well as different things you can do in bath and shopping opportunities.

Technical requirements of the project:

Before I start filming I will need to take some photographs of the location to test the lighting and which angle would benefit most for my video. I’ll be using mainly establishing shots as I want to show of bath and capture the majority of what I want to show to my audience.

Research costs/budgets/production issues:

The cost I will face are fuel, food, tickets to get into places and for taking tours. My budget for this project is £100 as I feel this is exactly the ammount I need for this project.

My main issue for production is travelling as Bath is an hour and a half drive from college which makes it hard to access the facilities if I need something while filming, however I plan to overcome this by making a check list of equipment and items I need present for production.

Research Evaluation:

The research task we were assigned for this unit I found more difficult than the other research I did for this course however I feel I did well given the problems I faced.

I feel as if the research was very helpful as it helped me shape my idea for my FMP and showed me where I may have gone right and what wasn’t so well received through the research for my audience. My best research I did and what was most helpful was doing my own primary research as I felt this gave me more freedom to go and gather the information I needed and made it easier for me to gather this information.

The research I would have done if I was given a bigger budget or more time would be doing more focus groups and going and visiting the place and getting more of a feel for the city and got to experience more of what makes the place more iconic, however with that said I feel that I got enough information and spoke to enough people to get an understanding of what makes bath so great.

I faced a few problems along the way such as missing information and lost time due to a lack of an idea however I overcame this problem by spending more time focusing on what I wanted to do and how I could make this different from what my peers were aiming to do and being more organized by purchasing a memory stick and saving all research/work on that so I didn’t lose my work, which turned out to be a very helpful investment.

Overall I feel that I did well given my problems and achieved a merit grade work and also feel I have learned more and gained a new perspective on how to do my research and what needs to be included.
