Voice Revision Center

In what voice do you want to speak? In what point of view should you write? Does your voice sound authentic and natural? These are some of the questions writers need to explore.

Directions: Revise your piece of writing using at least two of the following voice revision strategies:

1. Change the point of view2. Use a “persona”—put on the mask of something or someone in the writing

and speak in his or her voice.3. Write using dialogue.

Time Revision

Directions:

1. Make a time line of your writing piece. Identify the strategies you used. 2. Rearrange time in your story to make it less chronological but still logical.3. Rewrite a passage and expand it to a full page by slowing down time.

Describe the details as if they were happening minute by minute.

Sentence Combining Revision

Too many short sentences can make your writing sound choppy. Long sentences give writing more fluidity. A combination of short and long sentences will give the writing texture and variety of sound.

Directions: Combine short sentences into long, coherent sentences. Add extra words if you want to help make the sentence make better sense.

Verb Revision

Pump energy into your piece. Explore neutral verbs and replace them with more active verbs.

Replace passive verbs such as is, are, have, or did with more active verbs that give the sentences more energy.

Pruning Words Revision

Learning to cut words is an important revision strategy. Read the piece of writing and see if you can cut out the extra words and make a more condensed piece.
