NEWS

Item1: NEW LONDON-WIDE INITIATIVE GIVES PEOPLE WITH SIGHT LOSS A SAY IN SHAPING LOCAL SERVICES

Yesterday, on World Sight Day, the sight loss charity, Thomas Pocklington Trust has announced a new initiative to bring sight loss to the forefront of local services in all 32 London Boroughs. The charity has recruited a dedicated team to work alongside local sight loss organisations, optometrists, local authorities and health services to develop Local Vision Strategies - vital tools which deliver key insights about the needs of people with sight loss in each area.  While the provision of services in some London Boroughs is quite good, in many others it is not and Pocklington has made it a priority to ensure that every Borough has a Local Vision Strategy to identify gaps in services and plan a course of action to plug those gaps.  "Local Vision Strategies can drive commissioning of services in ways that bring better results for people with sight loss," says Pam Lacy, Project Manager at Thomas Pocklington Trust.  "They can

Page 3:  · Web viewThe feedback questionnaire, which closes at midnight on 12 October, is also available to download as a Word document. The campaign, which took place from 17 - 23 September

deliver the views of people with sight loss directly to Public Health Directors and others providing local services and help them understand and respond to the most pressing issues related to sight loss."Across the UK the number of people with serious sight loss is estimated at 2 million but, with an increasingly ageing population and 80% of sight loss occurring in people over the age of 60, this figure is expected to double by 2050.  Despite this, sight loss has been seen as a low priority in health and social care policy.  That changed this year when, for the first time, eye health and sight loss were included in the outcomes used to rate the performance of Public Health policy.  Now Local Vision Strategies have become a vital tool for shaping the range of services provided, both statutory and other.  Earlier this year, sight loss organisations across the UK gathered the views of people with sight loss to identify a range of wants and needs.  These were listed as priority outcomes in a framework called "Seeing it My Way" and endorsed by VISION 2020UK as part of the wider UK Vision Strategy.  "Visually impaired people have told us what they need and want," says Peter Corbett, Chief Executive of Thomas Pocklington Trust, "but if we are to achieve it there's a clear need for Local Vision Strategies to be developed and implemented in all areas.   Only then will consistently good quality services, as called for in the UK Vision Strategy, be available to people with sight loss throughout their lives - from pre-diagnosis to properly supported independent living."

In a pilot project Pocklington first worked with sight loss societies and others with an interest in eye health in the London Borough of Greenwich.  Three societies - Blind Independence Greenwich (B.I.G), Royal London Society of Blind People (RLSB) and Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) - came together to hold a consultation event which was backed by the Local Authority, local NHS, Local Optical Committee and Third Sector organisations. The event created an opportunity to pool local knowledge, develop a clear picture of the support needs of local people and co-ordinate an approach to achieving them (6).Following the success of that project, Pocklington is now

expanding this work with new schemes across London.  Materials developed during the Greenwich project - a template and workbook for developing a Local Vision Strategy and a film describing how this approach worked in Greenwich - will be made available to other areas. "This work is one of the most important things we can do to help blind and partially sighted people," says Peter Corbett.  "It is both an end in itself and a way to help determine the services that we should be providing in the future. And it is not restricted to London - that is just where we are starting."

Item2: News from Guide Dogs:  Inspiring Future Technologies for all & Walk My Way

Inspiring Future Technologies for allIt's Guide Dogs Week 2012, and we are delighted to reveal the first stages of some groundbreaking work that Guide Dogs have been doing to improve the mobility and inclusion of blind and partially sighted people.

Here at Guide Dogs, we believe that technology has huge potential to transform the way in which all our service users get out and about, but all too often, the solutions out there are niche, cumbersome, and expensive. That is why we've worked with Microsoft to develop a concept of how things might look soon, if we all pull together, and make our vision a reality.

We've produced a video that shows how, very soon, future technologies could help blind and partially sighted people get out and about on their own terms. It also shows graphically the massive impact that devices and technology services could have on everyone's lives - not just blind and partially sighted people. For a taster and to understand what drove our work, please take a look at http://youtu.be/ZXKT8ysNLBU (or cut and paste this link into your browser)

Page 5:  · Web viewThe feedback questionnaire, which closes at midnight on 12 October, is also available to download as a Word document. The campaign, which took place from 17 - 23 September

The short version of the film is just a snippet of what life could be like in the future. To see the full vision of how we believe devices and technology services could work seamlessly to help the day happen, please go to our website http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/inspiring-future-technologies where you can view 'A Family Day Out'.  (Note from the Ed: well worth having a look at!)This video tells the story of a perfectly ordinary day out sometime in the near future. Father, son and grandfather are finding their way around London, enjoying the exhibits in a museum, and making themselves very popular by taking home a present for Mum. Nothing amazing there - apart from the fact that the father is blind, and he is absolutely in control of the day, using technology to give him choices, complete independence, flexibility, and vital time critical information.

The videos show much more than simple 'mobility solutions' - they show that technology can be hugely empowering and can make a massive difference to people's lives.

But we know that a video alone can't get blind and partially sighted people out and about. We're aiming to start a debate, and inspire people and organisations to work together to make things happen.  Over the next months, we will be working hard to bring together technology companies, transport providers, policy makers, town centre managers, major visitor attractions and retailers, the VI sector, and of course service users, in order to make this happen. We believe that together we can steer the development of affordable technology to change the landscape, and travel, for blind and partially sighted people in the years ahead.

We're really excited by this work, and hope that you will be inspired by the video to get involved. If you are, please get in touch with the Guide Dogs team via [email protected]

Walk My Way

Page 6:  · Web viewThe feedback questionnaire, which closes at midnight on 12 October, is also available to download as a Word document. The campaign, which took place from 17 - 23 September

Guide Dogs has identified five distinct stages that people who lose their sight typically go through before being able to get out and about on their own terms again. We call it the Mobility Journey. When people lose their sight, it usually - and unsurprisingly - leads to them becoming depressed and so the second stage of the journey, after diagnosis, is 'getting through the depression'. Our research has found that nine out of 10 British adults rate losing their sight as one of the worst things that could happen to them, with a quarter saying that it is the worst thing that could happen in their lives.

Stages three and four of our mobility journey are 'wanting to get out and about' and then 'finding the right services'. Of course, Guide Dogs can help with these - I very much see us as an enabler, helping people who are visually impaired (whether from birth or having lost their sight) to live the life they choose. For every individual we help to get their life on track, we are just one small step on their journey.

You may be surprised to learn that every hour, another person in the UK goes blind. We know that blind and partially sighted people tackle new challenges every day and when someone loses their sight, we're here to make sure they don't lose their freedom as well. So, even though it's a tiny glimpse into life with a visual impairment, I can't tell you how important it is that you get involved and Walk My Way for Guide Dogs Week 2012. Whether it's taking a blindfold walk, having dinner in the dark or singing karaoke with your eyes shut, we want you to try doing something their way. We really think it will open your eyes.

Please do all you can to raise awareness and raise funds, because we simply can't function without you. There are hundreds of ways to take part during Guide Dog Week, and you don't have to be blindfolded.

Item8: iCAN Experiences

iCAN Experiences is a gift experience provider aimed squarely at people with disabilities. What makes iCAN Experiences unique is that we provide pertinent information regarding our experiences that allows friends, family or individuals with a disability to make informed decisions. Furthermore, we offer our gift packs in Large Print and Braille formats, making an ideal gift for Visually Impaired people, not available anywhere else. We have had some great coverage on local BBC News, an appearance on the BBC Radio 4 InTouch program and we are working with organisations such as Action for Blind People, RNIB and local associations for the blind.
