Spelling
Remember to check on your new spelling and tricky words this week.
You decide how to learn your words. Choose a different way each day.
Get your grown up to test you on a Friday.
Story Time
This week a story for all our Primary 1 animal lovers.
‘That Bear Can’t Babysit’ by Ruth Quayle
https://www.facebook.com/haddokindy/videos/378871536387013
Can you draw a picture of your favourite part of the story? Write a sentence below about what is happening.
Craft
Can you make your favourite animal using materials you have in your own home? Try to recycle items. Share your creations on our ‘Team’ page if you can.
There are some suggestions at the link below:

Writing
If you could be any animal – what would you be and why? Would you be a bird because you could fly around all day? Would you be a cheetah because you could run very fast. Write at least 3 sentences about which animal you would be and why? Remember start by copying the words from the title and get your adult to scribe the rest for you to copy. Try spelling any of our tricky words yourself. Describe your animal and tell us what you would get up to all day.
Success criteria* 3 sentences or more* Capital letters* Finger spaces* Neat writing* Full stops* Draw a picture to illustrate your writing

Topic – research
Which animal or plant would you like to find out more about? Get your grown up to help you do some research from books and the internet. Make a fact sheet full of facts and pictures about your chosen animal or plant.
Webcams
Follow this link for a list of animal webcams
https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/webcams
You could keep a diary or what animals you spot and what they are doing.
Edinburgh Zoo also have great Webcams.

Vet role play
When I was young I wanted to be a vet. A vet is someone who cares for sick or injured
animals.
Can you set up a vets surgery in your home? Use your animal toys to be your patients. How will you help them to become better?
Will they need a plaster or a bandage?
A to Z of animals and plantsWrite down the alphabet on a piece of paper. Each letter should be on a different line.
See if you can think of an animal, insect or plant beginning with each letter of the alphabet!
Here is a link to an alphabet song to get you started.

Birdwatch Information Handling - Tally Marks
P1 Learning grid 25 th – 29 th Jan Animals and Plants
Usually in school this week we would study and practise identifying birds ahead of the
Big School Birdwatch. You can still do this at home!
Access the RSPB website (link below) to find out how you can take part in counting the
different kinds of birds which visit your garden.
https://www.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/birdwatch/everything-you-need-to-
know-about-big-garden-birdwatch/
Our activity to go alongside this is to create your own bird feeder to hang outside in your
garden to attract lots of birds and to keep them well fed in winter. I have attached the instructions for two very simple bird feeders but you may find one of your own that you
wish to try.
Sometimes when we are collecting information for a survey, we can make it easier to record by using tally marks to
count. Below are some activities to help you learn how to use them. I hope we can use
this knowledge to collect and display information from our own surveys.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pEA3w8SQws - A video lesson which explains
how tally marks are used.
https://www.turtlediary.com/game/tally-marks.html - A game for tally mark practise.
I have also attached a spring themed worksheet, where you should count each object using tally marks. You may find it
helpful to count one object at a time (e.g. daffodils) and cross them off as you draw
your tally marks. I have included some flashcards you could use to play pairs too.
Maths
This week we have some animal problems to solve. Get your grown up to read you the sentences. Write down the 2 numbers you
hear and add them together. You may want to use counters or the number line attached
to help you to add.
The final page of maths is a challenge page. If you have found the maths work easy this
week – give it a go!
Websites
A little reminder about the websites that can help us with our learning.
* teach your monster how to read – a website that teachers your child sounds. An app is
also available for phones and tablets.
* Sumdog – a website with maths and spelling games. Log in details were sent to
your child’s GLOW email last week
