34 PRIME, CULL AND STORE PIGS at 10.30 am
Auctioneer: Jonathan Farrall 07796 952948
A full complement of buyers, sadly nowhere enough pigs forward to satisfy demand.
Just a couple of cull sows on offer grossed a maximum of £81.06, averaging £69.33, meaty sows to 42p/kg.
All credit to the vendors for a super show of butchers pigs which was well received by the buyers, no less than 3 pens over 160p/kg topping at 166p/kg for Pietrain x from the isle of Anglesey, the same vendor selling cutter weights to £153 and £147.
Some great porkers to go at too, David Brock selling to 164p/kg (Large White) and a further 4 pens over 150p/kg. Coloured pigs met a selective enquiry but sold to 52p/kg.
A long distance traveller consigned a grand pen of weaners, spirited bidding saw the hammer fall at £42 per head.

249 POULTRY
Auctioneer: Graham Merrit
The motorways were blocked, the traffic was chaos, the weather forecast was for freezing conditions, yet as so after the more adverse the conditions the better the auction. This was certainly the case today with plenty of stock, a good variety of poultry and for the buyers that were able to attend a determination to buy with the prices reflecting the demand. The top prices were Call Ducks with 4 lots selling up to £10 (all prices per head). A female goose sold for £10. 5 Black Rock pullets, 2 Campine Pullets, 5 P.O.L Pullets all sold for £7. Cockerels Sold well upto £6. There is always a demand for Cockerels at Beeston.
Rare Breeds Sale has been postponed to Saturday 10th March, starting 10am, there is still time to enter stock or enter on the day. Entry forms available from the office or online, featuring a special sale of poultry sundries, Feeder, Drinkers, Crates, Poultry Coops etc.

723 BUTCHERS LAMBS THURSDAY 11:30AM
Auctioneer: Gwyn Williams 07785 350588
We might have had ‘The Beast from the East’, and ‘Storm Emma’ doing their best to cover the UK with snow, but there was no sign of a Big Freeze in Beeston’s sheep pens last Thursday…..in fact, trade was boiling over! Very few sheep were available in large parts of the country, so it was rewarding for all our regular vendors who answered the call for stock to see all buyers in such fantastic form. Thank you to all those who braved the snowy, icy roads.
Absolutely blistering trade from the off, with any fit, well-fleshed Lambs above 225 p/kg, and no less than 15 pens in excess of 240 p/kg, peaking at 260 p/kg twice for the best pens from The Bailey Boys and George Stevenson respectively, closely followed by further pens from the Baileys at 258 and 255p, Tom Lomas seeing his 2 best pens each make 252 p/kg, and 3 pens from Peter Crossmore all making 250 p/kg……and plenty of Lambs grossing up to well in excess of £120 per head!
Just look at our Averages….10-15 p/kg above any other Market in the region this week!
We do try to look after our Vendors every week……and pay you on the day! So come to BEESTON for friendly, professional service, a top trade….and take your money home with you!
We’re not so far away! Plenty of vendors from North and East Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Derbyshire, N Wales and Anglesey have found the way to Beeston-why not give it a go?!
Don’t Forget- We offer a FREE, Confidential on-farm advisory service. Please use us to help you! Distance no object. Please call to arrange a visit:

81 CULL COWS 10.00am
Auctioneer: Simon Lamb 07815 188125
Topping at 161p or £1267
An understandably reduced entry due to the adverse weather conditions. All bar one buyer however was able to attend, and as such trade was no different to that of the last few week. Cows remain on fire, and for a poorer show in terms of quality, when black and whites still average well past £700 per life, there can’t be a better time to trade culls through a live ring at Beeston. Foreign tagged cattle past 130ppk and plenty of Holsteins over 140ppk. Barrens to date are without doubt as dear as I’ve seen them sold. Plus we pay on the day!!! Please don’t forget to inform ourselves if your cattle are tested, with a real premium for feeding types, and a bag full of buyers to match. At Beeston we cater for all models, shapes, sizes and nationalities….AND - we pay you on the day!
81 head entered (78 dairies)
Black & White cows to 161ppk or £1267, averaging 115.56ppk and over £724 per life!
Continental cows to 158ppk or £1087
Only a handful cows under £1
Please don’t hesitate to call Simon Lamb on 07815 188125.
Today’s market average (mostly black and white), coming in at 116.14ppk or £725.37 per head. (Everything in, including the lean, mean, lame and loopy!)
Black and white cows traded throughout the day at 135p to 150p for meated cows(140p to 160p younger models), 115p to 130p for steakers, 100p to 115p for stronger plain cows and 95p to 105p there after!

38 BUTCHERS CATTLE

With the majority of North Wales, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire waking up on Friday morning to heavy snow on the ground, I was inundated with phone calls between 6am and 7am from regular buyers who were unable to travel to Beeston. A text was sent to vendors to make them aware of the situation. Nevertheless, we had 36 vendors and 18 buyers round the ring. Taking everything into consideration we’ve experienced a very good trade.
We, your local auction market are always here to support you, our customers. 52 weeks of the year come rain or shine (or snow). Thank you for all those who braved the weather to attend our sale.
14 Continental Bulls
A very small show, with many vendors choosing to keep hold of their prized possessions. But we still had buyers for each and every commodity. Blue bulls to £358 for JM&JK Cliffe & Son and £340 for both TA&AE Hartley and ME&RA Sadler. Simmentals to £262 for WJ Oakes & Partners. Mediums £260-£320, young bulls £200+.
15 Continental Heifers
Same story as the bulls in terms of numbers. Blues to £275 for HL Griffiths & Son. Limousins to £230 for J&B Richards and Simmentals to £220 for JM&JK Cliffe & Son. Mediums £180-£250. Only smaller heifers £100-£170.
30 Native Bulls
Top call £240 for an Angus from JM&JK Cliffe & Son and a Hereford at £238 for GJP Robinson & Co. The edge would be off the mediums at £150-£180. Small bulls from spring calving herd’s £50-£120.
16 Native Heifers
Hereford heifers continue to be in big demand! Top call £170 and £165 for Stelin Ltd. Angus to £117 for JM&JK Cliffe & Son and £102 for ME&RA Sadler. Mediums £70-£100.
107 Dairy Bulls
A big entry of spring calvers, and what a lovely show of sweet young dairy bulls they were! Some may only be 8-14 days old but they are certainly worth rearing. Top price £80 for CB Davies & Partners and £63 for RJB Farming. Overall average £38.
27 TB Calves
Current supply of dairy bulls extremely high which hit the trade on some dairy bull calves. Most £20-£30 with a top price of £50.
20 STORE CATTLE
Auctioneer: Jonathan Farrall 07796 952948
With markets cancelled and sales postponed throughout the region due to the weather, the decision to proceed with a sale was always going to be a difficult one to call, many sellers and buyers were unable or unwilling to travel, those who did brave the “beast” were rewarded with satisfactory sales and the Auctioneers are indebted to both buyers and sellers for their levels of support.
Local celebrity, David Mounfield sold forward steers to £1230 (Shorthorns), Blues from the same good home sold to £1140 and a super pen of Friesians from Messrs Knowles sold to £905.
Big entries expected next week including some super young suckler bred cattle.
Thank you all for your continued support and if you have stores to sell, bring them where the buyers are; EVERY WEEK AT BEESTON!
Remember, when stock is wanted, the Auction system is the only true way to value them AND guarantee payment.
Don’t hesitate to call Jonathan for any advice on marketing store/beef cattle or better still try some next week.

57 WEANLINGS
Auctioneer: Simon Lamb 07815 188125
Steers to £610, Heifers to £640, Bulls to £400.
Firstly may I thank both vendors and purchasers alike for bearing the weather conditions to attend the March weanling sale. Those who attended were certainly not disappointed, with an understandably reduced crowd, vendors seemed pessimistic as to what trade would be like. Thankfully those who came got stuck in, with a 100% clearance being achieved and trade not a great deal different to any other sale. Topping the day was a Charolais heifer from Adrian Street, sold at 8 monthold and selling for £640. Other heifers from Lord & Lady Adams, Charity Farm sold to £605 for suckler bred 8mo Limousin’s. Steers from the same home sold to £610, again for 6mo Limiousins, with a superb bunch of steers from PR & PJ Ellwood selling to £570 for a group of continentals. Native bulls sold to £400 for Angus’s at 6mo from C Craig.
Due to the weather this week preventing vendors from attending, next week we shall hold a weanling section within the store cattle, for those who are short on test before the April sale. If you have any entries please contact Simon Lamb on 07815 188125.

Basic Payment Scheme 2018
It’s the time of year again in which BPS claims need to be completed, please find below a summary of this year’s updates :-
The RPA have undertaken proactive land change detection (PLCD) mapping updates which can lead to incorrect land data. Therefore it is extremely important to check your online maps and query and incorrect updates, these can include land cover changed, temporary electric fences mapped as permanent boundaries etc
Is your land currently, or sometime doing the year going to be affected by transport or utility works? If such works last for over 28 days you must withdraw the land from your BPS application to prevent a penalty, compensation for the loss of BPS payment can be claimed for.
Transferring land to a new owner or tenant can be completed online, if an error occurs during this process you must complete a paper RLE1 form to transfer/remove the affected parcel.
We have now began the process of transferring entitlements, we expect further entitlements to come onto the market in the coming weeks therefore ensure that you have the current number of entitlements to match the eligible hectares in which you are claiming on. If they are not used, you will lose them!
New greening rules, with key changes including ‘trees in a line’ under the EFA hedges option, the inclusion of field margins under the EFA buffer strip option and EFA fallow cover now converts to permanent grassland and the management rules have now changed.
We are now taking instructions to undertake BPS claims for 2018, do not hesitate to contact Andrew, Jonty or Stephen if you would like to book an appointment or require further information.

FREE SHEEP SCAB TESTING IN WALES
Sheep Farmers in Wales may be interested in making use of a free sheep scab testing service, being offered from 15th December 2017 – 31st March 2018. It is hoped the scheme to examine samples for sheep ectoparasites, being supported by Welsh Government, will provide accurate diagnoses to aid the identification of the most appropriate treatment methods.
Testing is being done at the specialist parasitology department at APHA Carmarthen Veterinary Investigation Centre (VIC) – but samples should be sent via your vet, accompanied by full clinical history, using the appropriate form here or here.
For further information, contact Carmarthen VIC at [email protected] or 012672 35244
