Session 5: Planning and programming road safety education

Checklist: A quality program

Outcomes are the focus for teaching and learning, and for assessment and reporting

Reflect an integration of strands, with a focus on no more than 2-3 strands per unit of work

Clearly identified outcomes (K&U, Skills & V&A), strands and content

Manageable number of outcomes

Indicators for each outcome: expected behaviours students will demonstrate when working

towards the outcome

Content is relevant to the unit outcomes in a meaningful way

A variety of teaching and learning strategies that assist students to work towards achieving

outcomes in a variety of ways

Teaching and learning activities produce evidence to assist teachers in making judgements about student achievement of outcomes

Reflection questions

1. Does the unit focus allow for a relevant link to road safety issues?

2. Does the unit provide opportunity for students to develop deep knowledge and

understanding about road safety issues?

3. Does the unit provide students with opportunities to practice and refine skills? Which

ones?

Curriculum eg students’ background knowledge and stage of learning, Stage Statement expectations, previous road safety education at school, what students are doing, thinking and saying, links with other KLAs.

Environment ie. what are the main road safety issues at the school or for my students?

Community eg school events that have road safety links - e.g. Walk Safely To School Day, excursions, safety days, holidays – when do these events occur?

Helpful hints to consider when setting a theme: 1. Establishing links between health issues - a greater connectedness to the material improving quality

learning.2. Avoid being too broad with the unit - develop deep understanding and knowledge. 3. Ensure the context is meaningful - it will have much more significance.

How will I know when my students get there?

PDHPE program evaluationThe following questions provide focus for a faculty to review a unit of work which includes road safety education content. The answers can be used to provide direction to faculties to enhance the quality of the unit.

Structure Yes No

Are the outcomes clearly stated?

Do the outcomes reflect an integration of PDHPE strands?

Are the number of outcomes manageable?

Are skills outcomes included?

Are the ‘learn about’s and ‘learn to’s clearly identified and linked to teaching and learning activities?

Teaching and learning

Can you clearly identify what you want your students to learn?

Can you justify why they are learning this?

Are you indicating how well they should do it?

Does the content explored in the teaching and learning activities relate to the outcomes in a meaningful way?Are there a variety of teaching strategies used to assist students in working towards the achievement of outcomes?

Is teaching about road safety content and other adolescent health issues integrated?

Does the unit address cross-curriculum content such as gender, ICT’s, etc

Are the dimensions and elements of the NSW Quality Teaching model embedded in the unit of work? Are there opportunities for students to develop deep knowledge and understanding about road safety issues?

Are there opportunities for students to practise and refine skills?

Are contemporary resources such as Road Risks- Your Choice and Shifting Gears utilised to support teaching of road safety content?

AssessmentDo the teaching and learning activities produce evidence that will assist teachers to make judgements about student achievement of outcomes?

Is there clear guidance to teachers about what evidence needs to be collected and when?

Are the assessment strategies fair, inclusive and challenging?
