Year 5: Home Learning - Week 10 22.06.20 Welcome to week 10 of your home learning from the Year 5 teachers. We hope you are all still keeping well and are managing to enjoy the sunny weather, as well as continuing with your home learning. It was lovely to see your artistic responses to the project work last week – we saw some wonderful creativity! The sunshine is certainly good for keeping spirits high and we are so impressed with how you are still managing to work from home after so long. Do still keep in touch through messages either via Class Dojo or Purple Mash – we really appreciate knowing how you all are. Please let us know if we can help in any way. Your class teachers will continue to check in with Class Dojo messages. As you know, many of our teachers are now in school teaching a ‘bubble’ of children. This might mean that your work will be read by someone from the Year 5 team other than your teacher, but please be assured that it will still be responded to. We are continuing to make our phone calls home; again this might be from someone else in the Year 5 team other than your class teacher. We thank you for your understanding with this as we support the children in school as well as the children learning from home. Daily Read for at least 20 minutes daily - independently or with an adult. Remember to make a note of what you are reading/ how much you have read in your Reading Record books. Use TT Rockstars and Spelling Shed daily for at least 20 minutes – use your login card to access these every day. We will be updating the assignment on Spelling Shed every Monday so that you can practise different spellings each week. Year 5: Home Learning - Week 10

22.06.20

Welcome to week 10 of your home learning from the Year 5 teachers. We hope you are all still keeping well and are managing to enjoy the sunny weather, as well

as continuing with your home learning.

This might mean that your work will be read by someone from the Year 5 team other than your teacher, but please be

assured that it will still be responded to. We are continuing to make our phone calls home; again this might be from someone else in the Year 5 team other than your class teacher. We thank you for your understanding with

this as we support the children in school as well as the children learning from home.

Daily

● Read for at least 20 minutes daily - independently or with an adult. Remember to make a note of what you are reading/ how much you have read in your Reading Record books.

● Use TT Rockstars and Spelling Shed daily for at least 20 minutes – use your login card to access these every day. We will be updating the assignment on Spelling Shed every Monday so that you can practise different spellings each week. If you want some further challenge with your times tables, here is a link to a self-generating torture square website. At school, we set it to ‘Type 10 by 10’ and ‘Difficulty 2’. Try to beat your score or your time! http://www.maths-starters.co.uk/tables_torture.html

● Choose words from the Y5 spelling list (found in your Reading Record Books) to practise each day (aim for 5 words per week).

Weekly

There continues to be one main activity for English, maths, science and project. There are challenges for each subject should you like to spend more time on any of this week’s topics. There are also some extra learning links for maths if you’d like to spend more time on this subject.

Page 2:   · Web viewThis week we would like you to create a storyboard to retell the story ‘Powerless’, sequencing it into 6 parts using drawings. Under each drawing, write a summary

There is no need to print the sheets – you can complete the activity or record your answers on some paper and take a photo to send to your teacher, or type it on a word document. Please continue to send in your work to your class teacher, via the Purple mash email.

EnglishThis week we are continuing to use the short film ‘Powerless’ to inspire our writing. The film can be found in the following link:

https://www.literacyshed.com/powerless.html

1. Watch the film again in full. As you watch, think about how you might describe each section. Can you section the film into 6 parts?

2. This week we would like you to create a storyboard to retell the story ‘Powerless’, sequencing it into 6 parts using drawings. Under each drawing, write a summary of that part of the story using just one or two sentences to describe the plot of the narrative. Divide a piece of paper into 6 parts to help with the layout of your work. Here is an example storyboard.

English ChallengeWhat might the two fairy-like creatures be saying to each other? What might they say to the man?Write a paragraph of dialogue between the two fairies and the man when they are outside together in the woods.

MathsOver the next few weeks, we are going to be revisiting some key topics that we have previously covered in Year 5. This week we are revising long multiplication, working up to multiplying a 4-digit number by a 2-digit number. 1. Watch this video to revise short and long multiplication – watch until 3:28

https://corbettmaths.com/2013/02/15/multiplication-traditional/ 2. Print and play 3 in a row. Play this game with a friend or a member of your family.

If you don’t have a printer, you could draw out the grids by hand.Who can get three in a row first?a) Take it in turns to choose a calculation from the question grid. b) Once you have worked out the answer, colour it in on the answer grid. Use a

different colour to your partner (or symbol).c) Keep going until one of you gets three in a row!

Hint: choose a calculation that you think will get you the answer you want.

Question grid:25 x 34 3 x 76 29 x 31 45 x 2254 x 12 44 x 26 61 x 24 31 x 2749 x 19 57 x 21 26 x 36 48 x 3214 x 47 48 x 15 6 x 47 39 x 4627 x 7 34 x 36 55 x 28 32 x 45

61 x 21 52 x 47 29 x 45 28 x 22

Answer grid:850 648 1197 936 990 931

1536 658 720 1464 282 1794189 899 1144 228 1224 1540

1440 1281 2444 1305 616 837

3. Watch a lesson on long multiplication - ‘Multiply 4-digits by 2-digits’ (Summer Term - Week 3 (w/c 4th May): Lesson 2) and complete the activity sheet provided alongside - click on ‘Get the Activity’ and then mark it using ‘Get the Answers’.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/Maths Challenges1. Minimal multiplication challenge.

Each player should draw 6 squares as shown in the picture below:

Players take it in turns to roll a 0-6 die and place each number in one of their squares. The aim of the game is to be the player with the smallest answer to the multiplication that they have made, so think carefully about where you place the numbers! Good luck!If you don’t have access to dice at home, you could use this online dice - https://www.online-stopwatch.com/chance-games/roll-a-dice/ Just click on the dice to ‘roll’ it.

Extension:If you enjoyed the game, why not try the nasty version?Play the game again, but this time when you roll the dice, you get to place the number in the other player’s grid. The aim is still to be the player with the smallest answer at the end.How will this affect where you place the numbers compared to the first round?

2. 4 cards challenge. Here are five number cards.

Page 5:   · Web viewThis week we would like you to create a storyboard to retell the story ‘Powerless’, sequencing it into 6 parts using drawings. Under each drawing, write a summary

Choose four of the cards to make the calculation correct.

3. ‘Trebling’ - https://nrich.maths.org/2004 4. ‘ABC’ - https://nrich.maths.org/730

This task is a real challenge!

ScienceFor the next few weeks, we will be revisiting some of the Year 5 science topics. This week we will be looking again at the topic ‘Changing Materials’.

In school, we learnt how some changes in materials are reversible and some are irreversible. Watch the clip below to remind you of what these scientific terms mean.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zcvv4wx/articles/z9brcwx

1. Make a list of how materials can be changed and sort them into reversible and irreversible changes. You may want to put them into two columns.

2. This week, we are looking at the change in materials that is caused by oxidation.Oxidation is when a material reacts and changes as it comes into contact with oxygen (usually the oxygen in the air).Watch the following clip that explains how rust is formed. Rust is a result of oxidation.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0119tj2

Another example of where you may have seen oxidation occur is when you’ve cut open an apple. What happens after a short while of a cut apple being exposed to the oxygen in the air?

3. Set up an investigation to explore this question:How can I stop my apple from going brown so quickly after I have cut it open?

Some things to consider when setting up your investigation: What different solutions could you put your slices of apple into to stop the oxidation

process? (some ideas might include: water, lemon juice, salt water, baking powder solution)

Are some solutions better than others?

Page 6:   · Web viewThis week we would like you to create a storyboard to retell the story ‘Powerless’, sequencing it into 6 parts using drawings. Under each drawing, write a summary

Do some solutions keep the apple whiter for longer? How could you record your results? What equipment will you need to conduct your investigation?

(this investigation will also work with pears, bananas or peaches)

Science ChallengeLook around your house or garden for evidence of any rust. Make of list of where you find the rust and explain why it has happened.

ProjectTo end our project ‘What on Earth,’ we are going to look at what positive changes we can make to help prevent plastic waste harming our environment.April 22nd was Earth Day; an annual event celebrated around the world to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Watch their video which suggests some positive changes we could make.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10Wa8RXb9Rwn

During the project, we have touched on a number of issues. We discovered what plastic was made from; we followed the journey of 3 plastic bottles to learn about garbage patches, landfill sites and recycling; we looked at why people buy bottled water and we looked at plastic waste that was affecting our local environment. Thinking back to all of these issues, can you recall something new that you learnt each week?

With all of these aspects in mind, what can be done to make a positive change? This week we would like you to make a poster that shows some of the things you think would make a difference in helping to prevent plastic waste harming our environment.

Page 7:   · Web viewThis week we would like you to create a storyboard to retell the story ‘Powerless’, sequencing it into 6 parts using drawings. Under each drawing, write a summary

Project ChallengeYou’ve probably got lots of ideas about what could be done to help prevent plastic waste damaging our environment. Which ONE idea do you think would have the greatest impact on the environment? Why?
