We decided to do something different last Friday as it was Valentine’s weekend so we are going to do the Farmer Duck activity today instead!

Farmer Duck

Listen to the story of Farmer Duck using either of the links below.

This one read by Michael Rosen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wn4b9AqiUbw

or

This one read by a teacher in London

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzP1a1Z-i-g

Activity 1

· On a piece of paper or in your project copy book draw a picture of a scene/your favourite part of the story ‘Farmer Duck’

Then write some sentences about your picture.

· For example:

3. The farmer was lazy.

3. The duck helped the sheep.

3. The farmer ate sweets.

3. The duck made lunch.

3. The animals chased the farmer.

3. The animals helped the duck.

3. The animals run the farm.

Alternatively, we could fold a piece of paper in 4 and make a story sequence in 4 parts with labels. What do you think?

Maths

In your envelope there were some Maths worksheets.

Today you are going to do the worksheet that is called Grandad’s Farm.

Activity 2

· Circle the vegetables into groups or Sets of 8. (Not all the vegetables will be circled!)

· Trace over the number 8.

· Can you name all the vegetables on the page?!

· Colour the farmer and his tractor or the girl with her basket collecting the vegetables or even the whole picture – you choose!

Turn over the worksheet

Can you break the Code?!

Activity: Adding numbers

Under each emoji there is a number. In the sums write the number of each emoji under its picture and then add the 2 numbers together to ‘crack the code’ and write your answer in the box!

· Use the Word Sheet to help you spell some of the words.

Here’s an example of some sentences you could write:

Put the flour in a bowl.Put the milk in a bowl.Add the eggs.

Mix together.Cook the pancake.Toss the pancake.Yum! Yum!

Draw your pancake at the top of the page and draw the yummy toppings that you like on your pancake!

On Tuesday we will post a link to a powerpoint story called The Runaway Pancake!

To access the poem ‘Swimming’ digitally click into Gillexplore and Senior Infants Skills book and then - go to the scroll down menu named “All Chapters” and access the relevant unit e.g. unit 6. You will see a green circle with a computer labelled “Unit 6 Oral Language and Interactive Resources” – that will give you access to posters, poems, games, etc. that are relevant to the topic/unit.

Activity 1 – Click on the interactive poem called Swimming and listen to it a few times. Listen out for the rhyming words in the poem. Eg bright and might, float and boat, dive and five)

Discussion ideas about the poem

· Why do swimmers float when they’re tired?

· Why do swimmers hold their breath when they dive/jump into a pool?

· What else can float?

· Where can you go swimming?

· What ‘gear’ do you need for swimming?

· Do you like swimming?

Over the Moon – Page 81

A. Trace over the words in the boxes. Match the words to the pictures the word rhymes with.

B. Use the Discussion questions above for the bottom of the page. Choose a picture that you can do – I can swim/float/dive to colour in.

Maths

We are looking at the number 9 in our Maths books. Today you are going to make your own number stories for number 9.

Activity

Story of 9 – try these!

· Pat has 4 buns in a bag. Jim has 5 buns. How many buns have they altogether?

· Kim has 7 apples. Mum has 2 apples. How many have they altogether?

· Dad has 10 bananas in a bag. 1 banana fell out! How many bananas are left in the bag?

· Anna has 3 balloons. Tara has 6 balloons. How many balloons have they altogether?

· There are 9 kids at the party. There are 8 buns. How many more buns are needed so everyone has a bun?

Practise making some Number sums for ‘9’. You will need 9 lego pieces or pasta shapes or any other small figurines/beads etc to use as counters.

On a piece of paper draw 2 circles as your empty sets. Divide the 9 lego pieces between the 2 empty sets – we have practised this already last month in January. Can you remember how to do it?

Look at the 2 sets – How many counters are in each set? Can you write the sum that you have made.

E.g. if you have 9 lego pieces in one set and none in the other your sum will be 9+0=9

Activity 3 – On a piece of paper write your number sums for 9.

Gaeilge

Let’s listen to the story again today.

· Click into the Folens “Abair Liom B”. Click on the drop down menu “Lesson” and Skip to “19 Seán agus an Gas Pónaire”.

Scroll down and Click on the Scéal.

The story is told in 6 pictures:

1. Long ago Jack and his Mum lived in a house. They were very poor. They had no food or money.

2. One day Jack and the cow went along the road.

3. They met a man. He had magic beans. The man gave the beans to Jack. Jack gave the cow to the man.

4. Jack came home with the beans. His Mum was angry. She threw the beans out of the window. The beans started to grow in the garden. Jack woke up the next morning. There was a huge beanstalk in the garden.

5. Jack went up the beanstalk. He went up very high. He saw a castle and a big door. He opened the door. He saw the golden egg under the table. He grabbed the egg. Then he saw the giant!

6. Jack was afraid. He ran and the giant ran too. Fee Fi Fo Fum! Jack went down the beanstalk. He grabbed the axe from his house and he chopped down the beanstalk. The giant fell down. Jack and his Mum had the golden egg. They were very happy.

Happy Half Term everyone!!!

Enjoy the well-earned break – you have all done an amazing job since January 11th!! We appreciate everything you have been doing under very challenging circumstances. Stay safe and well.

· Activity 1 – We are doing another ‘digraph’ where 2 letters make just one sound!

This digraph is ‘ur’.

Here is a link to a short Alphablocks video about the ‘ur’ sound

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHK3Q0-a3iI

· Section A - Look at each picture and name them. Which pictures have the ‘ur’ sound at the end of the word? Circle the pictures with the ‘ur’ sound.

· Section B – Practise reading the words – they all have the ‘ur’ sound and you will know the other sounds in the words. Trace as neatly as you can with your pencil around the letters ‘u and r’ in each word. Next Match the words to the pictures below.

· Section C – Write the word under the picture. The ‘ur’ sound goes on the black line!

· Section D – Read the 4 sentences at the bottom and put a line under the ‘ur’ sound in the words.

Maths

SESE – Science – Plants / farming

Have you ever wondered how plants get water from their roots all the way to their leaves?

Here are three simple experiments that you can try with things that you may have around the home.

All these experiments need some food colouring. Blue, red, yellow or green all work well.

You can try this experiment with white flowers, cabbage / evergreen leaves or celery

Get some food colouring and put a few drops into a large glass of water. Make it dark so that it is easier to see the colour in the leaf, flower or celery. Whether you are using a celery stick, lettuce/cabbage/other type of leaf make a fresh cut at the bottom of the stem. Place the item into the glass and allow the water to be absorbed in it. The process may take a couple of days so be patient.

If you wish, you could draw a picture on a piece of paper or in your project copy book and write a sentence or two to describe your experiment.

For example:

We used a leaf and some food colouring to show how water is soaked into a plant.

The leaf turned blue.

The flower turned red.

This simple celery experiment shows how coloured water travels up a celery stalk!

You can also try this experiment with some flowers. White ones work very well.

Over the Moon Page 83

We are looking at the storybook Grrr! By Rob Biddulph.

However we are not reading the story today. Instead we are looking at the ‘front cover’. (See picture on Class Story)

Discussion

· It says on the cover May the best bear win?

What does that mean? What do you think/predict the book is going to be about?

Let’s make a connection!

· If the book is about some sort of competition/contest – have you ever been in a contest/competition? E.g. dance competition, football/rugby/hurling match, sports races.

What competitions do you think the bears in the book might take part in?

Activity 1 Over the Moon Page 83

· Draw pictures of 2 competitions that you think the bears might do.

· Trace over the words above each picture and finish the sentence writing what competition you have drawn for the bears.

Maths

Activity 2 – Planet Maths Page 82.

Let’s revise some number stories

· Pam has 6 buns, Tim has 3 buns. How many buns do they have altogether?

Make up three or four of these stories and ask you mum, dad, brother or sister if they know the answer. Take turns asking and answering the questions.

For this activity you will need 9 counters. These can be pencils, lego blocks or pieces of pasta. Nine of anything.

Try this game if you like.

· Put the counters in a cup or bowl.

· Close your eyes and take some counters out of the bowl.

· Count the number of counters in your hand and then decide how many counters are left in the cup or bowl.

For example, if you take out 6 counters then start counting on with your fingers

7 (raise a finger), 8 (raise a finger), 9 (raise a finger),

How many fingers did you raise? 3. There are three counters in the bowl or cup.

Planet Maths Page 82

· Use your counters/lego etc in the umbrella at the top of the page to help you make the number stories of 9

· Practise writing the number 9. Remember to start the ‘9’ like a letter ‘c’.

Activity 1 – Handwriting – All Write Now

· Open your workbook to Page 39 – This week we are looking at the letter ‘E’.

Capital ‘E’ starts with a straight line down. But small ‘e’ starts with a curley line!

Have a sharp pencil before you start! Try to do your best writing and practise making the letters carefully. Don’t forget small letters can only go to the Dotted Line but tall letters can go all the way to the top line.

At the bottom of the page you have to write your own ‘E’ sentence!!

Here’s a suggestion: Ella the hen lays eggs.

When you’re finished, circle your best capital ‘E’ and decide which traffic light colour to give yourself. Colour the pictures.

Go to Gillexplore – Click on Skills book – Click Unit 6 in All Chapters search box and Click on Fiction Reader eBook and the story Tom on the Team should appear.

You can read the story to your child or by clicking the yellow arrow on the pages the reader is read aloud to the child.

Science experiment

Today we will try a little experiment and try to make a chicken sound using some thing that you may have around the house. You will need:-

A plastic cup, a piece of wool or cotton string, a paper clip and a piece of kitchen roll, a scissors and something pointy to poke a hole in the bottom of the plastic cup.

The video below explains this very well. (There are some other pretty nifty experiments that you may wish to try at the bottom of the page.)

https://sciencebob.com/chicken-sounds-from-a-cup/#:~:text=Now%20it's%20time%20to%20make,well%20%E2%80%93%20you%20hear%20a%20chicken

Here are couple of questions that you can discuss with your child afterwards.

1. What types of string or yarn makes the loudest sound? Which ones make the quietest?

2. Does the size of the cup affect the volume of the sound?

3. Try materials other than a paper towel to see if it affects the volume of the sound.
