Again, we expect you to choose one activity from the Home Learning Topic sheet to do a day, as well as one piece of Reading/Writing or Maths each day. Remember, there are also some fun additional activities you could be doing on a daily basis, too.Task Explanation GuidanceMaths This week we are focussing on area and perimeter. In
order to help us with this task, we have enlisted the help of spongebob squarepants!
Your first sheet looks at just the perimeter of shapes. Have a think about what perimeter means and how to calculate this for each shape.
Complete the sheet attached.

- Think about what perimeter means
- Make sure all sides of the shape are labelled correctly.
- Add the sides together to find the perimeter.
Remember:The perimeter of the shape is the total distance around the outside of the shape.
Example:
For the perimeter of this rectangle, 2 sides have been given. As you know from our work on shapes, the opposite sides of a rectangle will be the same length.
Therefore, the perimeter is 12+12+7+7 = 38cm
Next, we are helping spongebob to calculate the area of a quadrilateral. Rather than add the length of all of the sides, we must mutiply two sides together.

- Multiply the 2 sides together.
- Remember to include ² after your answer.
Using the same example as yesterday, we will now calculate the area of the rectangle.
One side is 12cm long, the other is 7cm long. Therefore, 12 x 7 = 84cm²
Some questions may have quadrilaterals devided into squares. Each square would be worth 1cm².
Your final task is to answer the following word problems on area and perimeter. Use the skills you have learned and read each question carefully!

A man in Suffolk has built a giant pirate ship in his back garden. Tim Jones spent half a year creating the captain's cabin, deck and seven metre mast (more than 3 times the height of a door!)

parrot called Polly and a Jolly Roger pirate flag. Tim said, "I spent every free hour I had and weekends building it. It was a tiring time but now I know it was all worthwhile."
Tim said the idea for the pirate ship came from his themed birthday party. He gathered and used discarded wood to build the pirate ship at minimum cost. Some trees had to be cut down to fit it in.
The unusual garden feature has become well known by locals as the mast can be seen from the road. “It really makes me chuckle every time I walk past,” said a neighbour. "Everyone loves it," Tim said. "I'd love to make it bigger but I really don't have the room."

WALT use inverted commas to punctuate speech.
S2S Inverted commas go before
and after any words that a character says. For example, "I'm hungry," complained Goldilocks.
If another character replies, the rule is to:- use another set of inverted
commas- put the new person
speaking on a new lineFor example,"There’s some porridge on the stove,” said her mum."But I've already had some porridge today!” exclaimed Goldilocks.Any punctuation goes inside the inverted commas at the end of what the character is saying.
