A warm welcome to Kim Mason as our new Director of Nursing. We look forward working under Kim’s leadership and moving into the future with Kim, utilising her vast knowledge and experience.

As we move further into Spring, the unseasonal weather has certainly not abated and we still look to the sky daily searching for rain. Our thoughts and prayers are with those working on the land, that there will be a reprieve shortly for them in the form of some rain, soon.

With the new kitchen at Abernethy now fully functional, we now look to commence the summer menu for all Homes. This will commence in mid October and we look forward to your feedback in the coming months.

In the month of October the Homes will also be supporting National Pink Ribbon Day on the 10th of October and Canteen for Kids with cancer on the 27th of October. We will be holding a morning tea and offering in support of the charities, items for purchase at the front reception desk.

Works on the refurbishments of the rooms in Abernethy Nursing Home are progressing. The completed rooms are modern and safe with built in features. With further room refurbishments the scope of ageing in place for residents will improve and increase.

Jacaranda Grove Hostel has had a recent visit on the 19th September 2017 from AACQA. The assessor was very happy to give the Home a ‘met’ rating for the two areas reviewed ( 2.13 Behaviour Management and 3.7 Leisure and Lifestyle).

Jacaranda Grove Hostel’s draft self-assessment submission is under review by the Management team for submission to AACQA by the 27th of October2017.

Mountain View Lodge Hostel underwent their recent annual audit from Food Aware Australia. The Home once again attained an “Ä”rating for their food service and programmes. Congratulations to all of the team involved.

Labour DayLabour Day commemorates the achievements of the Australian labour movement. The celebration of Labour Day has its origins in the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. On 21 April 1856 Stonemasons and building workers on building sites around Melbourne, Australia, stopped work and marched from the University of Melbourne to Parliament

7

House to achieve an eight-hour day. Their direct action protest was a success, and they are noted as the first organised workers in the world to achieve an eight-hour day with no loss of pay, which subsequently inspired the celebration of Labour Day and May Day. In Tasmania the public holiday is called Eight Hours Day and in the Northern Territory it is called May Day.The Labour Day public holiday varies considerably between the various states and territories. It is the first Monday in October in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales and South Australia. In both Victoria and Tasmania, it is the second Monday in March. In Western Australia, Labour Day is the first Monday in March. In the Northern Territory and Queensland, it is the first Monday in May.

Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival, is held annually in Munich, Germany. The 16-day party attracts over 6 million people every year who consume 1.5 million gallons of beer, 200,000 pairs of pork sausage, and 480,000 spit-roasted chickens during the two-week extravaganza. While the event reinforces stereotypical images of beer-loving, meat-loving Germans dressed in dirndls and lederhosen, visitors to the annual event come from all over the world. Oktoberfest is in fact one of Munich's largest and most profitable tourist attractions. It brings over 450 million euro’s to the city's coffers each year. The folk festival has given its name to similar festivals worldwide that are at least in part modelled after the original Bavarian Oktoberfest. The largest Oktoberfest held outside of

8

Germany takes place each year in the twin cities of Kitchener-Waterloo in Canada, where a large ethnic German population resides. Australia celebrates Oktoberfest in major cities and towns we have a local German Club at Warners Bay called the Germania Club

Oktoberfest music Marching brass band

Oktoberfest is known as much for its traditional folk music as it is for its beer drinking. Popular and folk music, marches, and polkas make up the oomph music Germany is stereotypically famous for around the world. As the evening wears on, the music becomes louder and more and more people begin to sing, linking arms and swinging beer mugs from side to side, some standing and swaying and dancing on benches or tables. Before each break, the band will offer up "ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit", a toast to contentment, congeniality, and relaxation.German folk music is not the only sound you will hear emanating from the massive beer tents. International hits like "New York, New York", "Country Road", "YMCA" and even disco- and rock-inspired tunes emanate from the beer tents. Still, you won't have to look far to find a brass band pumping out a German drinking song: Eins … zwei … g'suffa! Prost!

Oktoberfest beer

Oktoberfest beer is of a variety called Märzen. Darker and stronger than traditional beer, Märzen contains up to 6% alcohol, is bottom-fermented, and is lagered for at least 30 days. Before the advent of modern refrigeration techniques, this type of beer was brewed in March (as its name suggests) and allowed to age through the summer, so that it was ready to drink by late summer or early fall. Like all German beer, the Oktoberfest beer is brewed according to strict German standards (called the Reinheitsgebot and in effect since 1516) that precisely define the four ingredients allowed in the brewing of beer: barley, hops, malt, and yeast.

Just 6 Munich breweries - Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, and Spaten - are permitted to serve beer at the festival. 14 larger and several smaller beer tents and beer gardens provide enough seating for 98,000 visitors at a time. Beer is served by the Maß, a one-liter mug, and costs about 8 euros. Beer maids and waiters must be able to carry 10 of these beer-filled mugs at a time.

Halloween in AustraliaMany Australians celebrate Halloween, which occurs annually on October 31. It is also known as All Hallows’ Eve and is the day before All Saints’ Day. Costume parties are held and many children go trick-or-treating around this time of the year.

9

Trick-or-treating and costume parties are part of the Halloween celebrations

What Do People Do?Halloween is an observance that is becoming a growing trend in Australia. Some businesses and organizations coordinate Halloween-themed gatherings for staff and clients to interact with each other. Charity organizations may have fundraising activities that centre on the Halloween theme.

Halloween parties involve people dressed in costume to reflect the Halloween theme. Some parties are held at venues that are supposedly haunted. Ghost tours, hunts and walks are popular during this time of the year. More Australians are also taking part in trick-or-treat adventures that involve organized groups of parents and children visiting neighbours. These children either receive a treat or present a trick to their neighbours.

Some homes are decorated to fit the Halloween theme during this period. Decorations include fake cobwebs, jack-o-lanterns and images of black cats or witches. Many stores sell Halloween-themed decorations, activity books, or clothing around this time of the year. It is a profitable time of the year for costume shops, online stores, and other places that sell or rent Halloween-themed items. Cinemas may also have special screenings or movie marathons featuring horror movies or films with a supernatural theme.

Public LifeHalloween is not a nationwide public holiday in Australia. Retail businesses selling or renting out costumes and other Halloween-themed items may be particularly busy prior to and on Halloween.

BackgroundVarious Halloween activities and events were held on a smaller scale in Australia in the past but this occasion is becoming more popular across the country. More Australians are getting involved in celebrating Halloween, which originated from the ancient Celtic harvest festival known as Samhain. Halloween is also remembered as All Hallows’ Eve among the Christian community.

SymbolsThere are many Halloween symbols. Symbols include animals, such as black cats, bats and spiders, and figures, such as ghosts, skeletons, witches and wizards. Pumpkins, graveyards, cobwebs, haunted houses and the colours green, orange, grey and black are also associated with Halloween. These symbols are used to decorate homes and party venues and are seen on costumes, gift paper, cards, cookies, cakes and candy.

SMILE FOR YOUSmiling is infectious; you catch it like the flu,

When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too.

I passed around the corner and someone saw me grin

When he smiled, I realised, I’d passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile, and thought about its worth,

A single smile just like mine could travel around the earth.

So, if you feel a smile begin, don’t leave it undetected

Let’s start an epidemic quick, and get the world infected!

Keep the smile going, pass it onto a friend.

Everyone needs a smile!!

Four Easy Steps, to Staying Hydrated in the upcoming, Summer Months.

STEP1: Water, Drink 8 to 10 glasses a day as the bare minimum – Drink more on warmer days and when exercising.

STEP 2: Don’t use thirst as an indicator for staying hydrated if you wait until you’re thirsty to drink, your already dehydrated.

STEP3: Choose your beverages wisely. Alcohol and caffeinated beverages such as coffee and some teas and soft drinks will only increase the effects of dehydration.

STEP4: On those warmer days, take plenty of breaks from your daily activities avoid the sun between 10am and 2pm, wear a hat take an umbrella ,wear sunscreen, get in the shade and drink plenty of fluids.

These are true!!!!!!! But only in America…..These examples are taken from letters written to government agencies:Dear Sirs,

1. I am glad to report that my husband, who was reported missing, is dead.2. This is my eighth child. What are you going to do about it?3. Please find for certain if my husband is dead, as the man I am living with can't

do a thing until he knows.4. I am very much annoyed to find you have branded my boy as illiterate. This is a

dirty lie. I was married to his father a week before he was born.5. I am forwarding my marriage certificate and my 3 children, one of which was a

mistake as you can see.6. Unless I get my husband's money pretty soon, I will be forced to lead an

Mexican CyclistA man on a bike, carrying two saddlebags, was stopped by a guard while crossing the US-Mexican border.  He had rigged up a primitive rope bridge to by-pass the customs control.'What's in the bags?’ demanded the guard.'Sand,' the cyclist answered.'Take them off. I need to take a look.' retorted the guard. The guard emptied the bags and found out they contained nothing but sand. The man reloaded his bags and continued across the border. A week later, the same man was crossing again with two more bags. The guard demanded to see them, and again they contained nothing but sand. This continued every week for six months, until one day the cyclist failed to appear. A few days later, that same guard ran into the cyclist in Tijuana.'Hey, where have you been?' the guard enquired. 'You sure had us wondering. We knew you were smuggling something across the border. So tell me and I won't say a word. What was it?'The man smiled broadly and told him the truth, 'Bicycles!'

No Exit - Funny Hotel StoryByron checks into a hotel for the first time in his life and goes up to his room. Five minutes later he calls the reception desk and says, 'You've given me a room with no exit. How do I get out?' The desk clerk says, 'Sir, that's absurd. Have you looked for the door?'Byron replies, 'Well, there's one door that leads to the bathroom. There's a second door that goes into a cupboard. And there's a door I haven't tried, but it has a 'Do not disturb' sign on it.'

Make Your Own Bed?Denis went on holiday to Spain and stayed in a cheap hotel. The reason it was cheap was because he had to make his own bed. They gave him a hammer and nails to do that.

Letter of the Month - Dear AbbyDear Abby,I have never written to you before, but I really need your advice.  I have suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs, phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up.My wife has been going out with 'the girls' a lot recently although when I ask their names she always says, 'just some friends from work, you don't know them.' I always try to stay awake to look out for her coming home, but I usually fall asleep. Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn't want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her.Around midnight, I decided to hide in the garage behind my golf clubs so I could get a good view of the whole street when she arrived home from a night out with 'the girls'. It was at that moment, crouching behind my clubs, that I noticed that the graphite shaft on my driver appeared to have a hairline crack right by the club head.Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the golf shop where I bought it?Thanks Jim
