Dear Community of St. Bernard,

Some have asked what I thought about the Priest Convocation held earlier this month with Bishop Lennon. First off, I thank you for your prayers for all of us during those days and for your interest now.

There were two elements to our gathering this year: spiritual renewal of priests, and, further discussion on the personnel and demographic changes of the Diocese over the next 25 years.

For the majority of those gathered, the spiritual input by the Franciscan, Fr. Albert Haase, was superb. Often are biennial gatherings delve into many 'heady' topics that we sit and discuss. In my opinion, this was the first Convocation where together we laughed our heads off!!

Many of you may still remember Fr. Haase's Lenten Mission here five years ago. His talks then were engaging, humorous, and difficult to sleep through. So, you can

imagine among an audience of priests and bishops, he was in rare form. We could relate to many of his funny, real life experiences. Yet, his talks were insightful, spiritually helpful, and practical for parish ministry.

I mention this because Fr. Haase has agreed to return to Akron in 2018 for another Parish Lenten Mission. Get ready!

The presentations by Deacon Lou Primozic on future changes were informative. He updated us on all the organizations that have been part of the process, including the Bishop's Pastoral Council that consists of lay men and women from around the Diocese.

It was made abundantly clear that the direction we take in the future must entail all the Church of Cleveland, not merely boards that represent the clergy and diocesan organizations.

For instance, as we move forward, we must look at the future of Catholic Education as well; our schools and religious education programs. How will we serve the decreasing number of children in Northeast Ohio? How will we serve the growing number of Hispanic families in all eight counties of the Diocese? There is more to discuss than the decline in clergy.

For some of us, myself included, I had hoped to hear about a vision for the future; or a goal with some set action plans. Deacon Lou and the Diocesan staff have done an excellent job in gathering information, opinions, and suggestions to go along with the statistical data we received last October from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA). So, this portion of the Convocation was a little disappointing to learn that we are still at the drawing board.

All in all, there is an element to these biennial Convocations that is amazing: the fraternal spirit among brother priests. You can't plan it or put it on any agenda. That spirit simply is created and renewed when we celebrate Mass together, pray and anoint our elderly and infirmed priests, have the opportunity for Confession, relax, laugh, and catch up on one another's life. Just when you wonder some days if you can go on, these gatherings are a reminder that the Lord is our life. Our faith in Him and our call by Him to minister to His Church is an amazing and shared privilege.

Together with Bishop Lennon, Bishop Gries, and so many of our home-grown Diocesan Priest you have to know of the sincere care and love the clergy have for this Church, the People, of the Cleveland Diocese.

My Catholic ancestors came to Cleveland in 1841. When or from where your family came, you and I stand today on what they built; not just buildings but a vibrant Catholic presence to serve Christ in Northeast Ohio. I pray we will stand together - bishop, priests, laity - to make the right decisions, and even sacrifices, for the Good of the families who come after us. May our efforts and example inspire them to be faithful. Fr. Dan
