This product is ideal for any Spanish classroom where students want to discover more about the new Spanish royal family. This webquest is written entirely in English and students investigate who the previous king was (Juan Carlos I), why he abdicated the throne, who the new king is (Felipe VI), and various facts about the royal family. Students also need to draw a royal family tree.
There is a list of suggested websites to use at the end of the document if you wish to give that to your students as well.
The webquest is followed by a crossword puzzle that has a word bank.
Answer keys are included for both activities.

1. Who was the previous king of Spain? Juan Carlos I was the previous king of Spain.
2. How many years did he serve as king? He was the king for 39 years.
3. When and why did he come into power? Francisco France, the dictator of Spain at the time,
proclaimed Juan Carlos to be his successor. He did so to avoid a civil war from breaking out after his
death. When Franco died in 1975, Juan Carlos I became the king two days later.
4. When did he abdicate his throne? He officially abdicated his throne on June 18 th , 2014.
5. Why did he abdicate his throne? He claimed to have abdicated his throne because he wanted his
son, Felipe, to be king while he was still young. Juan Carlos I referenced Prince Charles of England in
saying that he didn’t want “Felipe to grow old waiting [to be king] like Prince Charles.”
6. Who is the new king of Spain? Felipe VI is the new king of Spain.
a. How old is he? He is 46 years old.
7. Who is his wife? His wife is Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano.
a. Is she from a royal family? Explain. She is not from a royal family – she is a “commoner.”
b. What was her previous profession? She used to be a television journalist.
8. What are their children’s’ names? They have two daughters named Leonor and Sofía.
a. How old are they? Leonor is 8 years old and Sofía is 7 years old.
9. When was the new king’s coronation? His coronation was on June 19, 2014.
10. Where did the ceremony take place? The ceremony took place officially at the Cortes Generales in
Madrid, Spain. It is the official courthouse of Spain.
11. What is the name of the plaza where Spaniards gathered to view the new royal family for the first
time? The public viewed the royal family as they stood on the balcony of the Royal Palace (El Palacio
Real) from the Plaza de Oriente.

12. Did a lot of Spaniards gather in the plaza to see the new royal family? Yes, there were thousands.
13. Does the king have any siblings? If so, who are they? Yes, Felipe VI has two older sisters, Cristina
and Elena.

15. Where does the royal family live? They live in a mansion on the outskirts of Madrid on the property
of the Zarzuela Palace.

17. What role does the royal family play in Spain? The king is really just a figurehead and diplomat.
They participate in various charities around the world and represent Spain.
a. Do they have a lot of power? They do not have a lot of power. The president has the power.
18. Generally, how do the citizens of Spain feel about the royal family? Do they like having a king and
queen? When Juan Carlos I announced his abdication, there were many protests in Spain. Generally,
the people of Spain do not want the Spanish monarchy to continue.
