Importance of Evaluation rubric

• For teachers– to clarify the goals and improve teaching

(instruction)– reduces the hassles– can give corrective feedback to the learners

• For students– providing students with clear expectations

about what will be assessed.– criteria are identified and communicated prior,

students know what is expected of them

Points to be keep in mind

• Make a list of categories to assess.• Distribute your rubric to your students.• Use clear, concise, and jargon free language• Use measurable criteria e.g. give two to three solution for

problem. • Possibly use less columns and rows

Advantages and disadvantages• Advantages

– Reduces the hassles– can keep focus on skill or knowledge– It is used to give feedback, identifying specific levels of

student performance allows the teacher to provide more detailed feedback to students.

• Disadvantages– Rubrics do require an initial investment of your time. But

once they are completed, they are easily adaptable to various grade levels, subject areas, and specific assignments.

– Articulating the gradations of the rubric is sometime challenging.
