An iBeacon is a small wireless sensor that you can attach to any location or object. They broadcast low-energy Bluetooth signals which your smartphone can receive and interpret, unlocking micro-location and contextual awareness for associated apps to interpret.

The iBeacon broadcasts Bluetooth LE signals through built-in antennas.

Smart devices in range receive those signals and compatible installed apps can then respond with a notification or another action.

iBeacon software then grants developers full access to the metadata, including beacon ownership, object type, and precise location. Software also enables security and other services.

Most mobile devices that feature Bluetooth 4.0, including Apple, Android, and Windows phones, can interact with beacons as long as they meet certain software requirements.

A corresponding app needs to be installed to receive and interpret beacon signals.

NFC is different from BLE technology, each having it’s own advantages, but the two can still work together to enhance the consumer experience.

NFC (Near Field Communication)

Close range (Up to 20cm – Optimal range < 4cm)

Consumer must initiate interaction every time

Many smartphones do not include NFC features

No power required to function

iBeacons & BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy)

Larger range (Up too 100 meters) - Geofencing

Automatically triggers an action once opted-in

Most modern smart phones support Bluetooth

Requires a power source

NFC & BLE Beacons: Complementary, not Competing

Beacons can support NFC as a form of authentication, pinpointing a consumers precise location.

Beacons work to detect nearby devices and triggers content, NFC intended for data transfer

Misconceptions & Data CollectionWhat concerns do consumers and marketers have?

© 2014 Gold Group Enterprises, Inc. and © 2014 Estimote, Inc.All Rights Reserved

Page 20: Webinar: Motivate Action with iBeacons

FALSE. Beacons don’t track you.Beacons only transmit signals. These signals are picked up by smartphones and other mobile devices, which then require an app to make them meaningful. Smartphones can only receive the signals sent from an iBeacon if:

•Bluetooth is turned on•An app has been downloaded and been given permission to use location services.

#1: Beacons are used to track your every move without your permission.

Page 21: Webinar: Motivate Action with iBeacons

FALSE. Beacons don’t deliver content.Any content consumers receive when they pass by an iBeacon comes from the app they’ve already installed. The iBeacon transmits the location, enabling the app to deliver relevant content.

While an iBeacon itself cannot collect information, the apps that use them can gain these useful consumer insights:

•In-venue location•Duration of stay•Visitation frequency•Most visited areas•Customer feedback through surveys
