One of the questions I ask new volunteers gathered at 4-H Orientation is, “What brought you here this evening? Why are you volunteering your time with 4-H (especially when time is so valuable)?” Their answers come back: I grew up in 4-H; I have an interest in a project area and wanted to share it with others; we needed a leader, and I was asked; I wanted to be more in- volved with my kids. And so begins the journey. We sign-on as a project leader, a resources leader, a club leader, perhaps to assure the 4-H experience happens for our own chil- dren, perhaps to reconnect with fond memories, or to build quality educational experiences in the commu- nity. We don’t always know—in fact, I believe we seldom know—how our role as a nected, cared for, and val- ued. She achieved it in simple, ordinary ways: leading projects, attending events, laughing and learning and growing with the kids she taught and the volunteers who be- came her friends. I am reminded of the words of football star Joe Ehrmann, who I heard speak recently. He said that “to be a man or to be a woman” required but two things. The first is to love and to accept love. The second, he said, was to leave the world—in some way or form—better as a result of your being. How true. It was that way for Nonie. We come to 4-H for myr- iad reasons, but the op- portunity we have to con- tribute positively to the lives of others is constant. Beginning in 2011, the fair will monitor the consumption of food and drink in and around animals and especially inside the barns. The policy does NOT ban outside food on the fairgrounds. The policy is not put in place to assist the fair in generating more revenue. The measure is in place for the safety of our guests, exhibitors and employees. These precautionary tactics are based on recommendations outlined in the “Compendium of Measures to Prevent Disease Associated with Animals in Public

Settings” which is published by the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians to assist animal venue operators, exhibitors, veterinarians and various public health agencies by providing recommendations to minimize the potential for risks that may be associated with animals in public settings. In order to disseminate this information, a memo will be posted March 1st to our website and mailed to every livestock and horse exhibitor in May. In order to mitigate the inconvenience, the fair

Sacramento County Horse News

Horse Article By: Kallie Johnson Hello everyone, January the Sacramento county 4-H Horse Council hosted the Sacramento Horseman's Association Dinner and Award Ceremony Jan 10th. It was a good turn out, we had a lot of 4-H members help serve dinner and

dessert. The Sacramento County 4-H Horse Project had the Faux Show and held at Rancho Murrieta Sunday January 23rd. The 4-H Horse Project had their last performance test of the year at SHA on Saturday the 29th of January, and they had a lot of kids testing and passing their test. In the month of February, the

Groom Squad was held at the Sacramento Horseman's Association on February 12th. On February 26th the Sacramento County 4-H had a Demo day, with kids from all projects coming and showing their knowledge.

NEW Website Coming Soon!

We have a date to roll out the new Sacramento County web site. Our current plan is to push out the new web site on 2/25. You will be able to get to the web site from the following link: http://www.ca4h.org/Join/County/index.cfm. This link will take you to

the Statewide 4-H program page used to link to the individual counties. I am in need of new pictures to help improve the content and the look of the web site. Please be SURE that any recognizable 4-H members or children in your pictures authorize the photo's use on the

web site. I would prefer a paper release just to confirm that. I am in the process of building generic club pages for each club. If you don't see your club page on the web site on the 25th, check back. Thanks, Gail Jones
