Beloved: Where jealously
and selfish ambition exist,
there is disorder….
James 3:16
Chaos and disease are
companions of disorder.
These are not the gifts we
seek, yet each of us has
probably experienced their
detrimental power in our
lives. In your prayer today,
take a long, honest look at
your enemies of peace. What
kind of chaos exists in your
life that you would like to
replace with the gifts that
wisdom brings?
Wisdom comes from above,
James says. It is peaceable
and gentle—filled with
mercy and all sorts of good
fruits. What are the good
fruits that wisdom brings?
Wars within and without do
not come from wisdom. The
conflicts among us and
within us often come from
making wrong choices.
Perhaps if we would
prayerfully listen to our
conflicts, trying to discern
what they need, we would
know how to pray and what
to ask for in our prayer.
O Prince of Peace, may all
wars and conflicts cease!

“You covet but do not possess. You kill and envy but you cannot
obtain; you fight and wage war. You do not possess because you
do not ask. You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly,
to spend it on your passions.” James 4:2-3
St. James warns each one of us against the dangers of materialism. In
fighting the materialism in our culture, I must ask myself not only,
“What do I own?” But more importantly, “What owns me?” What is
the one thing I possess that I could not live without? This is what
owns me.
Have you remembered St. Joseph in your will?
Marriage Moment
“Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come
from” (James 4:1) Couples fight about many different things–
money, whose job it is to clean up, the kids… Identify your top
gripe of today and decide to let it go. Is one day of peace too hard?
Parenting Pointer
The 4th Monday of September is national Eat Dinner Together
Day. Maybe you always (or mostly) eat dinner together. Good. If
so, talk about something like favorites (food, dessert, toys,
vacation…) If not, eat together today or as often as possible this
week.
