Weddings are a careful balance of manyelements that culminate on one specialday. Making all of the components ofa wedding come together seemlessly

requires a well organized bride and groomand the cooperation of professionalwedding vendors who understand theirunique roles.

Vendors, including florists, transportationcompanies, musicians, and dressmakersare essential to a successful wedding.Competent wedding vendors will removemuch of the worry and work from a couplesshoulders.

But not every couple ends up withtop-notch wedding vendors. Research, planning and verifying references aresome ways to ensure your vendors makeyour wedding day that much moreenjoyable.

    * Seek recommendations from trustedfriends and family members. Talk tofriends and family members whose insightyou value about which wedding vendors

they used. If you attend a wedding oranother party and find the flowers or themusic particularly well done, ask for thename of the florist or band. Word-of-mouth advertisement is a great way to find

quality wedding vendors who will helpmake your dream wedding a reality.

    * Consult with a wedding planner. Ifbudget allows, work with a weddingplanner. He or she will have an extensivelist of wedding vendors you can contact. Awedding planner wants the job to get doneright and efficiently, and many weddingplanners have already vetted and verifiedcertain vendors as quality workers.

    * Always ask for references and dontignore them. Busy wedding vendorsshould provide you with a list of namesof satisfied customers. Talk with coupleswho used the vendors services in thepast and ask the questions that are mostimportant to your decision-makingprocess. Unbiased feedback also may beavailable through online review sites, butdirect contact with references may make

you feel more comfortable. If a vendor failsto provide references, this should raisesuspicions about the persons reliability.

    * Deposits should be a fraction of thetotal price. Avoid wedding vendors who

insist on hey deposits. A deposit is agood-faith agreement to hold the dateof the wedding, and it should be a smallpercentage of the overall cost of theservices.

    * Do not pay balances too far in advance. Many wedding vendors require thebalance be paid on the day of the weddingor shortly before. Good vendors realizecouples will not want to pay the tally untilthey have received the products or servicesthey signed up for. A photographer mayask for the final payment when albums aredelivered. e exception may be a catereror reception site that needs the funds toorder food and beverages a few weeks inadvance. Paying off a vendor too earlymeans you run the risk of that vendorhaving your money and then not comingthrough on the wedding day. Its difficult

to track down a person for a refund, plusyoure le with finding a replacement atthe last minute.

    * Contracts are your friends. Everyagreement should be in writing. You have

a better chance of fighting for a refundor restitution in court when you have acontract in writing.

    * Consider wedding insurance. Even thebest-laid plans can go awry on a weddingday. Anything from freak weather eventsto illness to vendor absences can wreakhavoc. e Better Business Bureau advisespurchasing wedding insurance to protectyourself when weddings are especiallycostly. Such insurance may cover vendorswho fail to show up, cancellations, inclement weather, military deployment, medical emergencies, and travel delays. With wedding insurance, you wont losemoney if plans change. A basic insurancepolicy that covers loss of photos, videos, attire, presents, rings, and deposits usuallycosts between $155 and $550, dependingon the amount of coverage you want.

Built in 1889 on land purchased in the Finnells

Addition from Mary Kirby Wright and husband,J.B. Keshlear at a cost of $135, this church is the

oldest continuously used building in Grain Valley.

e design is typical or rural churches at that time.

e lumber and other material for the church were

purchased from the sale of Pleasant Valley Methodist

Church in the Stoney Point community. e original

building was a large one-room structure heated by a

wood stove. e ceiling, sides, and windows with the

curved, pointed tops pointing to heaven remain apart of the sanctuary today. As new innovations came

about, indoor plumbing, a gas furnace, electricity

and air-conditioning were added. ree renovations

have been made to the church: a fellowship hall,

kitchen and two classrooms were added in 1948. In

1961, a narthex and upstairs classrooms were added

along with a complete remodeling of the sanctuary.

In the 1990s, a two story room was built on the west

side of the building, giving the church more class

room space. e first pastor was C.B. Fontaine . ePink Hill Methodist Church established in 1871 was

the mother church of the Oak Grove, Oakland, and

Grain Valley Methodists churches. ese churches

were served by circuit rider ministers who

alternately preached at the Pink Hill, Grain Valley

and Oakland. e practice was disbanded in the

mid-1980s and the Grain Valley United Methodist,

now called Faith United Methodist Church of Grain

Valley is still active in the community and holdsservices every Sunday.

Cheryl Ellis, owner of Acquaint Gathering,

envisioned a venue where she could take the stress

out of memorable occasions for her customers.

e chapel in historic downtown Grain Valley fit

her vision perfectly. is former stop for circuit-

rider ministers has the charm of old rural church

architecture with the modern conveniences needed

to provide a great event space.
