• Before 1860s Italy was independent states- map on page 453; after 1860 Italy became unified.

• Goal of Young Italy, the secret society founded by Giuseppe Mazzini, was to transform Italy into an independent sovereign state.

• Goals of Count Camillo di Cavour– Promote rapid industrial growth– Reduction of Catholic Churches influence.– Advancement of Sardinians national interests in foreign affairs.

• Foreign countries influence in unification of Italy – – France and Great Britain during the Crimean War– Sardinian joined on their side to support

them.– Cavour met with Napoleon III to have Napoleon help get Austria out of Sardinia.

• France joined with Sardinia to defeat the Austrians.

• Giuseppe Garibaldi was a leader of the guerrillas who defeated the Kingdom of the Two Sicily’s; he learned guerrilla warfare while in South America.

• Nationalism- desire for national independence- powerful force in Europe in the 1800s.• Nation-state- a political organization consisting of one nationality rather than several

nationalities. Important because people in one unified country with common ideals could best contribute their efforts to the well being of all its citizens.

• Germany had remained divided and economically disadvantaged due to the Reformation and the Thirty Years War. – Protestants and Catholics had not been able to get rid of their divisions.– Regional splits also was a factor.

• Austria did not want Prussia to get economically stronger than them.• Prussia was leading the way in creating economic, military, and political

• Wanted to crush all uprisings

– France’s revolution in 1848 spread to Austria.– Revolutionary movement in Austria was

weakened due to groups fighting for different ideas.

• Emperor at the age of 18• Dissolved the revolutionary assembly• 68 year reign• Struggled to maintain a unified empire• In 1859, Austria was forced to give up the

Italian province of Lombardy• 1866, during Seven Weeks’ War with Prussia,

Austria lost its influence over its German states as well.

Dual Monarchy

• Francis Joseph met with Hungary’s leader Francis Deak to come with a compromise on relations with Hungary.

• 1867, the Compromise or Ausgleich restored Hungary’s independence and divide the Austrian Empire into a dual monarchy.

Dual Monarch

• Each, Austria and Hungary had their own constitutions, prime minister, and parliament, but shared ministries of foreign affairs, war and finance.

• Independent politically but tied economically.– Industrialized Austria– Agricultural Hungary

• Some were happy with the dual relationship while others within the two nations were unhappy. -- Slavs, Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Serbs, and Bosnians who had no voice.

Powder Keg in the Balkans

• Mid 1800s, the Ottoman Empire declined.

• 1829, Greece won independence

• Foreign powers watching the decline of the Ottoman empire– Many wanted to prevent Russia from

expanding into the area.– Crimean War-1854 to 1856

• 1877, Russo- Turkish War –justify expansion into Balkan territory– Created Bulgarian state

• Jingoism-describing extreme patriotism, which was provoked by foreign threat.

• Bulgaria divided into three parts in 1878.– Ottoman keep control of one– Cyprus to Britain– Bosina and Herzegovina to Austria -Hungary

Balkan Conflict

• 1912, moving out of Ottoman rule

• The Treaty of Bucharest helped to stop fighting in the Balkans and redistributed lands, but people were not happy.

• Writers called the Balkans the “powder keg of Europe”
