As we mark 15 years of the Student Enterprise Programme in 2017, it’s time to celebrate all the achievements of student entrepreneurs down through the years.

Since the very first National Final in 2003, well over 150,000 secondary school students from all over the country have researched, set-up and run their own enterprises, with the support of their teachers, principals, families and Local Enterprise Offices.

Several million hours have been spent in the classroom brain-storming ideas, researching potential markets, negotiating with suppliers and winning over customers!

Why?By getting first-hand experience about the world of business today through the Student Enterprise Programme, you’re opening the doors to an enterprising career in the future.

And as the Local Enterprise Offices, as part of County & City Councils across the country, are the “first stop shop” for anyone looking to start or grow their own business, when the time comes - start by knocking on our door!

Congratulations to you all on reaching the National Final in this very special anniversary year!

With 22,000 students from 620 schools taking part every year, this is the biggest and longest-running student enterprise programme of them all.

Before Christmas, I visited Coláiste Chraobh Abhann in Co. Wicklow to launch new Teacher Resources and to meet the Senior Category winner of the 2015/2016 National Final - Luke Byrne of ‘Headphone Helpers’, as well as other up-and-coming entrepreneurs from the school.

What’s clear to me is that the Student Enterprise Programme is so successful because of your hard-work, drive and determination; because of your teachers’ and principals’ support for enterprise in the classroom; and because of the

support structures that have been developed by Local Enterprise Offices in your local authority.

I want you to know that you are an inspiration to me and to my colleagues in Government and you are a credit to your schools, your families and to your Local Enterprise Office.

Wherever your enterprising career takes you after school, remember to keep in touch with your Local Enterprise Office as they will keep supporting you along that journey.

Fiona’s career has evolved over time and she now splits her days between her role as management consultant to small and medium organisations through her consulting business Nexus Consulting, mentoring other entrepreneurs, and guiding her own retail businesses.

John is a Leadership Coach and Management Consultant specialising in Organisational Psychology, with particular interests in leadership, change, trust and organisational culture.

John has over 25 years experience working in multinational companies and his own consultancy, that includes roles in finance, risk management, business consultancy with owner managers of SME’s and coaching & leadership development with leaders in multinational organisations.

Jordan is currently working on a business venture called ‘KidsCode’ - a multiplayer virtual world aimed at seven to twelve year olds, that teaches them how to program.

Ciara Clancy is the founder and CEO of Beats Medical. Ciara founded Beats Medical in 2012 to treat neurological conditions through technology. The company now has offices in three countries and users in over 40 countries worldwide. In 2015 Ciara was named European Laureate Winner in the International Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards. Ciara was a finalist in Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards and this year was named Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur.

Blaine Doyle CEO (GlowDX)

GlowDx has developed the world’s first accessible diagnostics platform targeting Mosquito-Bourne Infections. Integrating Molecular Diagnostics with Machine Learning GlowDx aims to reduce morbidity and mortality rates associated with these diseases, while using the data generated to model action plans and interventions to also tackle the effects these disease exhibit on economies. Blaine has a B.Sc. in Biotechnology from DCU, M.Sc. in Molecular Cell Biology from UCC and graduated from SOSVentures IndieBio Accelerator in 2015.

Daniel is currently developing his business, Caballis, and plans to launch his second product later this year. Having exhibited at the 2016 National Ploughing Championships, the Caballis Equi-Feeder has gained a lot of interest among industry experts and has provided Daniel with very valuable business experience.

In addition, you must ensure that the technology you may use in your product and the promotional literature you print should not infringe on anybody else’s rights. BUSINESS BOOTCAMP 2017

The top 20 students at senior level at the Student Enterprise Programme National Final 2017 will be offered the exciting opportunity to attend a Business Bootcamp this Summer. The Bootcamp is being organised by the Local Enterprise Offices and will take place in state of the art venues at University College Cork the week of 29th May 2017.

The five day Bootcamp will feature a range of interactive enterprise workshops from highly experienced trainers to help students further develop their business ideas. Practical workshops on market research, team building and business pitching will also take place. Students will get to work closely with entrepreneurs associated with UCC. All members of each of the top project groups will be chosen in order of merit, based on the projects’ total scores.


Student Enterprise WorkbookOur Student Workbook is a comprehensive guidebook for students embarking on running their own student enterprise. It contains 10 key chapters on all aspects of running a business as well as a new set of summary sheets with more basic information for junior and intermediate category students.

LUKE BYRNE, Student Enterprise Award Winner (Senior Category) 2016

A Young Man On A Mission!It is a year now since 17-year-old Wicklow Student Luke Byrne won the top prize in the senior category of the National Student Enterprise Awards. And the dynamic young entrepreneur has not let the grass grow under his feet since!Luke, a 5th year student in Coláiste Chraobh Abhann in Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow, won the title for coming up with a clever solution to an age-old problem – how to keep earphones tangle free.

Luke developed a silicone band worn around the neck with loops to prevent earphones from becoming twisted and falling on the ground when walking or running.

“My idea for ‘Headphone Helpers’ arose from my own frustration with headphones getting tangled when I was out jogging.” says Luke. “So, I decided to come up with an idea to solve the problem as I realised there was a huge potential market for it.”

The first step for Luke was to get a prototype made up with silicone, and when this was perfected the inspiring entrepreneur sourced a factory in China to make ‘Headphone Helpers’. His product is suitable for all earphones.

“This worked out much cheaper than getting them made here. But next stop was getting packaging designed and printed and I sourced a company in Ireland for this.”

Luke’s first order for ‘Headphone Helpers’ was for 200 units, but today he is selling on average of 120 a month through his website at €7 each – and demand is growing. In recent weeks he has gotten

orders from the USA, the UK and France.

Currently Luke is negotiating with a major Irish retailer with 200 outlets all over the country to stock ‘Headphone Helpers’. “If I clinch this deal this will be a major breakthrough,” said Luke. “It means I will be going from 120 units a month to around 700 units a month. This will really bring me to the next level”.

Meanwhile Luke is also trying to concentrate on his studies and plans to do business in third level before becoming a full-time entrepreneur. He already has ideas for other products.

Luke cannot praise the Student Enterprise Programme enough for getting him to where he is today.

“This competition is a fantastic support and inspiration and the perfect way to get people like me to put business ideas into action. The Student Enterprise Programme gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams, and taught me about the importance of tenacity in business. If you believe in something never give up. Just do it!”

He had special praise for teacher Ruairi Farrell who Luke describes as a wonderful support and mentor. “It was so important to get support from Mr Farrell and the school. That made a huge difference. He really got behind all of the students who participated in the Programme.”

Throughout the process Luke learned about all aspects of business from manufacturing to marketing and finance.

“ I would urge any secondary school to enter this Programme. It’s a great learning experience and although it is hard work it is a lot of fun too.”

ENTERPRISING CO. MEATH STUDENTS GALLOP TO SUCCESS!

TURNING A HOBBY INTO A “CRAFTY” BUSINESS!

Enterprising students Mary Freeman, Emily Finegan, Kate O’Reilly and Ava Cadden are galloping to success with their innovative equine business idea that scooped them the top prize in the Student Enterprise Awards 2016 Junior Category.

The 14-year-olds, all passionate horse lovers, won the award for the ‘AMOR’ stirrup guide, a metal frame that is attached to the stirrup of a horse to help new riders position their feet correctly.

One year on from winning the award the students, who attend St Oliver’s Post Primary

School in Oldcastle, Co. Meath, have ambitions to sell their business idea, which has huge potential in the flourishing horse industry at home and abroad.Spokesperson for ‘AMOR’, Mary Freeman, said the idea to develop the stirrup guide arose through personal experience of learning to ride.“When you ride a horse you must have your feet in a certain position to increase balance and reduce the risk of falling off and getting injured. Many inexperienced riders have trouble addressing this.”“We came up with a solution to this problem - an attachable specially modified stirrup tread that cradles the foot into the correct position. This helps the rider to position his or her foot properly without much conscious effort.”According to Mary the experience of taking part in the Student Enterprise Programme has been rewarding and enriching.“Being part of Student Enterprise and pitching and talking about our business idea has done wonders for our confidence. It has also taught us all that we are capable and that it is possible to get out and achieve if you are determined enough.”Mary paid special tribute to business teachers Ciara McConnell and Ronan Baxter who guided them through the process. And for the supports they received through the Local Enteprise Office Meath.The girls are currently busy with their studies, but hope that they can sell on their business idea to a company that will take it on and get the Amor Stirrup guide on the market.

Enterprising Donegal students Sean Óg Harrigan and Oisín McLaughlin turned a hobby into a successful business idea – and scooped the top prize in the Student Enterprise Awards 2016 Intermediate Category in the process!The 15-year-old pupils of Scoil Mhuire Secondary School in Buncrana won the award for Inish WoodWorking, a crafted wooden artefacts business.

Sean Óg, who comes from a strong family of skilled craftsmen, looked after the production in the business. He started helping his grandfather in his workshop before he started primary school and was skilled in wood working tools by the age of 10. Oisín looked after marketing, promotion and finance.

One year on the company has customers in Ireland, the UK and Canada - and has even done work for an Irish bar in South Korea!

Both students say entering the competition has helped their confidence and boosted their organisational and speaking skills.

Sean Óg is continuing with the business and is busy at weekends selling his products at craft fairs and at a leading Inishowen tourist attraction Dumree Fort. For the moment Oisín has taken a back seat but is busy as a social entrepreneur. He does a lot of fund raising for charities, including Focus Ireland.

According to Oisín: “I would recommend to all students to get involved in this competition. It was great fun and I learned so much in the process.”

Sean Óg agrees. “The competition has taught me how to turn a hobby into a business.”

Both thank teacher Martina McBride and other school staff for their encouragement and the Local Enterprise Office in Donegal for support.
