Opening Keynote

Ginger Meyer is the Clinical Director for Children’s Medical and Mental Health Resource Network, a program of SIU School of Medicine. She has worked with children and child welfare issues for over twenty years. She has been a leader in the southern Illinois community developing a Children’s Mental Health Network to increase the professional development opportunities for professionals who work with traumatized children and their families.

A Journey to Building Resilience Resilience is a journey of discovery, curiosity, and building mutual trust and connection through coaching, mentoring, and support. We cannot create resilience in our students alone; it takes a powerful dedicated team of people to make it happen. Nuggets of how this is done will be woven into the engaging presentation through real examples of struggle and mastery over maladaptive behavior.

Transitioning from Trauma-Informed to Trauma Sensitive

9:10 am – 2:50 pm Room: G203

Andrea Ortez, and Julie Shellberg, Partnership for Resilience Early childhood experiences have lasting, measurable consequences later in life; therefore, fostering emotional well-being from the earliest stages of life helps build a foundation for overall life-long health and well-being. This full day session is specifically designed for individuals or teams who would like to develop a trauma-informed school system. Training will focus on ACES research, developing resilient students and staff, parent and community engagement, staff care, classroom strategies to meet the needs of students exposed to toxic stress, and increasing executive functioning in order to meet the needs of the whole child. It is suggested that attendees who register for this session have basic prior knowledge of the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACEs) research.

Universal Design principles (UD) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) are two promising interactional models of inclusive service that work well. Special education and disability services have, for many years, built their philosophical constructs on the tenets of the medical or rehabilitation model. This session will explore some of the limitations of the old models and how educators can embrace the principles of universal design.
