WICKED STRONG LOOKS TO INSPIREBy Catlyn Spivey The Boston Marathon bombing that killed three andinjured 260 people on Apr. 15 shook America, but noone was more effected than the New Englandresidents. Since that time,funds have been developedfor victims, and many haverallied together to restore thecity. With the anniversary ofthe tragedy fast approaching,horse racing gives Boston onemore reason to be hopeful, ina possible GI Kentucky Derbycontender, Wicked Strong(Hard Spun). Don Little, Jr. of CentennialFarms purchased WickedStrong at KeenelandSeptember seven monthsbefore the Boston tragedy.The colt was already given aname before the purchase,but Little had other plans. AI wasn=t crazy about thename Moyne Spun. His dam was Moyne Abbey andhe=s by Hard Spun, so that really wasn=t too catchy,@ heexplained. AWe were in the process of changing it, butBoston Strong was taken. Since >wicked= is the absoluteadjective of New Englanders and Bostonians, it fitperfectly.@ The Massachusetts-based Centennial Farms went to$375,000 for the colt at the 2012 KeenelandSeptember sale, but the name had little to do with thecolt=s appeal. AHe has a very athletic build and he was a greatmover on the walk,@ said Little. AHe gives you a senseof presence. His eye is very aware and you can justsense his intelligence and that he=s all business. He alsohas, what I like to call, the lucky spots on his shoulder.@

EUROPEAN PATTERN COMMITTEE MEETSCourtesy PA Sport The British Champions Long Distance Cup is the mostnotable upgrade in the British calendar following theEuropean Pattern Committee's recent annual meeting. The two-mile event takes place on Champions Day atAscot Oct. 18 and will now be run as a Group 2 eventafter being upgraded from Group 3 status, as willLeopardstown=s Solonaway S. Sept. 13. Salisbury's Dick Poole S. is another contest to be
augmented by theEPC, switchingfrom listed toGroup 3 status,along with theVintage Crop S. atNavan. However, in ablow for Chester,the Dee S. hasbeen downgradedto listed level fromGroup 3, while the
Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot has also undergone thesame demotion. The Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown,the Prix Noailles at Longchamp and the GoldenePeitsche at Baden-Baden have all been changed toGroup 3 from Group 2 after having failed to achieve therequired rating parameter for the previous three years.
The EPC has also rubber-stamped the necessarychanges to the program ahead of the inception of thetwo-day Irish Champions Weekend to be staged atLeopardstown and The Curragh on September 13-14.A total of 10 group races will be run, including five atGroup 1 status, with the Champion, Matron andMoyglare Stud S. all switching to a later date to featureas part of the new two-day spectacular. As aconsequence, the Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket willmove to Oct. 4, a week later than usual, to maintain the current three-week gap between that race and theMatron S. Changes to the venue of a number of end-of-seasongroup races in France, most notably the G1 PrixRoyal-Oak, were also approved in anticipation of theclosure of Longchamp for redevelopment after the2014 running of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. The EPC also confirmed its intention to toughen uptheir stance on quality, with 43 races at risk ofdowngrading in 2015, including the Bahrain Trophy atNewmarket and the Tattersalls Gold Cup at theCurragh. Italian racing has been plagued by funding issues inrecent years and the EPC has decided that a finalultimatum will be presented to the authoritiesstipulating certain conditions in relation to the paymentof prize-money, including the payment of all arrears bythe end of March 2014. Should they fail to comply,Italy would cease to be a member of EPC from the startof 2015. Cont. p4

CURRENT FORM As you may recall, the APEX (Annual ProgenyEarnings Index) figures we publish cover a rollingseven-year period ending with the year just finished (inthis case, 2007-2013). Today we look at what siresaccomplished just in 2013, so we have leading NorthAmerican and European sires of 2013 A Runners and2013 ABC Runners, plus the leaders for the 2009 and2010 sire crops (first foals those years), and forJapanese sires. So this is the most current form. Table 1 is the leading North American and Europeansires with eight or more A Runners in 2013; the topseven (14+ A Runners) are ranked, then the other 31sires, each with 8-13 A Runners in 2013, are listedalphabetically. The top NA/EU sire of 2013 A Runnersis--not a huge surprise--Coolmore=s Galileo (Sadler=sWells), with 22. He is also the leading NA/EU sire of2013 ABC Runners (Table 2), only by a wider margin,with 59. His margin isn=t so wide among just A Runners,as WinStar=s Speightstown (Gone West) and Darley=sMedaglia d=Oro (El Prado) are tied for second, with 19. They are both members of the amazing (first foals)2006 sire class, as are Gainesway=s Tapit (Pulpit) (14 ARunners last year) and Lane=s End=s Candy Ride (Ridethe Rails) (nine). Ramsey Farm=s champion NorthAmerican sire of 2013 Kitten=s Joy (El Prado) (17) isfourth leading NA/EU sire of 2013 A Runners, followedby Coolmore/Ashford=s Giant=s Causeway (Storm Cat)(16), and Juddmonte Farms= British-based Dansili(Danehill) (14), who is tied with Tapit.
One interesting thing at which we often sneak a peekis the ratio of A Runners to ABC Runners. A Runnersare the top 2% of a population; ABC Runners are thetop 8%. Over the group of 937 sires with 2013 APEXratings, the overall ratio of A Runners to ABC Runnersis therefore 1:4. You=ll note that most top sires have ahigher ratio (usuallybetween 1:2B1:3),from which we caninfer that better siresto tend to get a higherproportion ofhigher-class runners. Table 2 is theleading NA/EU sireswith 25 or more 2013ABC Runners. Here thetop eight (37+) areranked, then the other34 sires, with 25-36 ABC Runners last year, are againlisted alphabetically. As mentioned above, Galileo leadsthis list by a wider margin. His 59 ABC Runners lastyear signals that, even though he is frighteninglyexpensive to breed to, at least when you don=t get astar you have a fighting chance of getting somethingthat can run some. Speightstown (43) leads the chasingpack by a respectful distance, followed in turn byGiant=s Causeway (42), Kitten=s Joy (41), and Dansili(40). Medaglia D=Oro (39) is tied with Dansili=sstablemate at Banstead Manor Oasis Dream (GreenDesert) (39). Airdrie=s, then WinStar=s deceased Harlan=sHoliday (Harlan) is next, with 37.Cont. p8

Darley sires dominate the results for NA/EU sires withtheir first foals in 2009 (first 4-year-olds 2013). Table 3is the 11 North American and European F2009 sireswhich had five or more A Runners in 2013, and isheaded by three Darley stallions: Discreet Cat (Forestry)(Kentucky) leads all NA/EU F2009 sires with 11 ARunners in 2013, followed by Teofilo (Galileo)(Kildangan, IR) and Street Sense (Street Cry), now backin Kentucky, with nine each; then follow Lane=s End=sEnglish Channel (Smart Strike) (8), Ireland=s MorristownLattin Stud=s Dark Angel (Acclamation) (7), andCoolmore/Ashford=s Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) (6).
Table 4 is the 12 NA/EU sires with 17 or more ABCRunners last year. Darley=s Hard Spun (Danzig),transferred to Japan this year from Kentucky, is theleader on this list with 31 ABC Runners in 2013, withTeofilo (29) and Street Sense (28) again second andthird. Adena Springs= Ontario-based Silent Name, a sonof Sunday Silencebred and raced bythe Wertheimerbrothers, ranksfourth with 23 ABCRunners last year,with Discreet Cat(22) fifth. We=velearned over theyears that Ontariostallions are helpedby having goodearningsopportunities over along, slots-fueled Woodbine season--at least up until2013. Usually they disappear from the list when westart counting Grade I/Grade II winners (as they do inNew Mexico and often New York), but Silent Namemight be an exception. A dual listed race winner inFrance, he won the GII Arcadia H. at Santa Anita at onemile on the turf and the GII Commonwealth Breeders=Cup at seven furlongs on the Keeneland synthetic trackfor trainer Gary Mandella. The best horse in his firstcrop is Silentio, also trained by Mandella, and a dualGrade II winner on the grass who was a good third toWise Dan in last year=s GI Breeders= Cup Mile. Cont. p9

Majestic Warrior (19) was the most prolific NA/EUsecond-crop sire of ABC Runners (Table 6), followed bythree young sires who did not have three 2013 ARunners: Lane=s End Curlin (Smart Strike) (18, two2013 A Runners including GI Belmont S. winner PalaceMalice); Three Chimneys= Big Brown (Boundary) (17,two 2013 A Runners); and Darley=s Street Boss (StreetCry) (15), who had just one A Runner last year, butthat was GI King=s Bishop S. winner Capo Bastone. Japanese sires do operate in their own universe,though notably when their top horses do venture out,often to France, Dubai, and Hong Kong, theyconsistently prove they are right up with the best onthe world stage. Tables 7 and 8 summarize Japan=sbest sires of A Runners and ABC Runners in 2013.Deep Impact (Sunday Silence), with 35 A Runners and92 ABC Runners last year, and King Kamehameha(Kingmambo) (26 A Runners, 89 ABC Runners) are farin front of everybody else in Japan, and in most of therest of the world, too. Japanese sires do have massivenumbers of runners, but even so, to have 92 and 89ABC Runners in a season--well, we=d for sure have toinclude those two in any list of World Top 12 Sires.
